Chapter 948
The moment Morris stepped through the mansion doors, he marched straight to his study and slammed the door shut. “Get my son home now,” he barked at the butler. “I don’t care if he’s in a meeting–drag him back here if you have to.”
Inside the study, Morris’s normally composed face had gone ghostly pale, his hands shaking like leaves in a storm. He looked like he’d seen a damn ghost.
‘What is going on? That damn ruby ring… How the hell did some random kid end up with that jewelry?‘ he wondered. ‘And what is his connection to that lord?‘ The questions kept circling in his head like vultures.
Within the hour, Morris’s eldest son Jerry came barging into the study, still in his suit from the board meeting.
“Jesus, Dad,” he blurted out, taking in his father’s ashen face. “Your text said it was life–or–death. You having a heart attack or what?”
“Lock the damn door!” Morris hissed, knuckles whitening on his mahogany desk.
When the click of the deadbolt echoed through the room, the old man finally exhaled. “Remember that VIP from five years back?” His voice was barely above a whisper.
Jerry frowned, running a hand through his gelled hair. “You mean when you were knocking on death’s door? Hell yeah, I remember. That Cloudshadow Sect bigshot from Frihamen–pulled some miracle voodoo and patched you up.”
A shudder ran through Morris. “She saved my life, sure. But after she left?” He leaned forward, sweat beading on his forehead. “Every underworld syndicate and government spook came crawling out of the woodwork. Interrogations. Threats.
“They only backed off when they realized I knew jackshit about her.”
“Okay, creepy trip down memory lane,” Jerry said, loosening his tie. “But why are we talking about this now?”
Morris’s eyes gleamed like dull coins. “You’ve always wondered why
your niece train under the leader of Cloudshadow Sect, haven’t you?”
“Damn straight I have!” The heir threw up his hands. “She’s got clout, sure, but she’s small–time compared to—”
Morris cut his son off with a sharp wave of his hand. “Listen, kid–that girl’s way out of our league.”
Jerry opened his mouth to protest, but Morris barreled on, “I don’t have all the deets, but trust me, she’s packing some serious connections. We’re talking big–league players – the kind that’d make Deariton’s elite wet their fancy pants.”
His fingers drummed nervously against his knee. “When they came sniffing around for her? Half of Deariton’s bluebloods showed up. And some… other folks. The scary kind you only hear about in backroom whispers.”
His eyes glazed over remembering. “But one guy? Total game–changer. Walked like he owned the air he breathed. Had this ruby ring that’d make a queen kill for it.”
Now he leaned forward, voice dropping to a rasp. “And get this–I just saw its twin on that Lysander punk’s finger. That’s no ordinary bling. That’s Forreb ruby ring–the real deal. And those carvings? One–of–a–kind stuff.”
“Not sure if it’s the same guy,” Morris admitted. “The vibe’s different.”
“Wait… Dad, you don’t mean…?” Jerry’s forehead/creased as the realization hit him. Morris’s words made his face turn serious.
“I’ve got a hunch,” Morris said slowly, “that the new boss running the factions in Forlunda is none other than the boss from Cloudshadow Sect–the same woman who saved my life back in the day.
“But that doesn’t add up. With her skills and connections, why would someone like her stick around a backwater town like Frihamen? And yet…
“Now after all this radio silence, she’s suddenly back in the game. That’s why I pushed Jenny to become her disciple. We need to be on the inside of
