The assistant’s voice was neither loud nor soft, but just clear enough to reach Owen’s ears.
He squinted his eyes, with deep, bottomless ink swirling in the depths of his eyes: “Do you know what you are talking about?”
“Of course I knew!”
The words had already been spoken, the assistant bit her lower lip and forced herself to say the following words.
“You fought with Ms. Basom for three years, and Ms. Heald waited for you for three years. Can’t you see how Ms. Heald feels about you? In order to become the person you like, she never grew her hair long because you said you didn’t like short hair. Her wardrobe is filled with white clothes because you said you liked white. Even though she used to love spicy food, she hasn’t eaten anything spicy since you said you didn’t like it. Honestly, besides the physi- cal resemblance to Ms. Basom, is there any similarity in personality between Ms. Heald and Ms. Basom? Initially, I gave you more options for substitutes that were more similar in all aspects. If you just wanted a substitute, wouldn’t it be better to choose someone who looks more like her? But you didn’t, you insisted on choosing her, and even told me that you wanted Maya. So, are you keeping her around just because of that slight resemblance?”
“During the time when you pretended to pursue her, all your smiles were genuine, and I haven’t seen you smile so happily in a long time. There were so many beautiful moments, and I know how much you were moved by them, oth- erwise you wouldn’t unconsciously smile when recalling those memories. You did so much for Ms. Heald, even though you always said it was just to annoy Ms. Basom, but I have never seen you go to such lengths for anyone else!”
“You have been so fixated on Ms. Basom for all these years, but I haven’t seen you any happier since you’ve been with her. Your smile seems to be even less than before.”
Owen was stunned, his back chilled by the assistant’s words.
Did he like Maya?
Over the years, he was not unaware that he would uncontrollably reveal his true feelings when facing Maya, and would instinctively be kind to her.
He attributed all of this to her resemblance to Jessica.
So he ignored the fact that Maya’s personality and Jessica’s were completely different.
Maya attracted him, not because of her appearance, but from beginning to end.
He had always thought that he should like Jessica, but as his assistant had said, he didn’t feel as happy as he had imag- ined when he was with her.
Instead, it would stir up emotions because of Maya’s actions.

He remembered the night when Maya saw the chat history between him and Jessica.

Originally, he could have given Maya some money and let her leave, just like he had done with previous substitutes. But inexplicably, this time he panicked, with only one thought in his mind –
I wanted to keep her by my side.
So he proposed a substitute contract.
The assistant seized the opportunity and continued, “Mr. Keith, haven’t you noticed that ever since Ms. Basom re- turned to her country, Ms. Heald has been distancing herself from you? Don’t you understand your own feelings? It will be too late when she has truly given up on you!”
