Mer

The next day at work, I sat at my desk, the resignation letter printed.

Rick and I met and fell in love in college.

He joined this tech company, and I followed, rejecting my parents’ plans to be with him, supporting him from his entry-level position. During our relationship, I’d hinted at the idea of bonding.

But Rick, always busy with work, said he hadn’t established himself, fearing my parents wouldn’t approve of their daughter bonding with him.

He always prioritized his career, and to avoid burdening him, I discreetly managed my parents’ expectations, concealing my family background to alleviate his pressure.

Now he’s Mr. Overton, the company’s top executive.

When I found the ring in his pocket, I’d hoped he’d finally decided to propose, but it was all wishful thinking.

A colleague approached, surprised by the resignation letter on my screen. “Daisy, you’re about to be promoted to director! Why resign?”

I smiled. “I’m getting bonded soon. Might switch companies.”

Melissa congratulated me. “So many happy couples lately! I saw Mr. Overton’s post last night-he’s getting engaged!”

“Mr. Overton and his fiancée are a perfect match. Apparently, they’re childhood sweethearts, each other’s one true love.”

My smile faltered.

Checking my phone, I saw Rick had blocked me on both his personal and work WhatsApp accounts.

He’d blocked me on his personal account last night after leaving, and his work account only showed formal communications.

Just then, Rick entered the office with Calista.

They were close, Calista rosy-cheeked and radiantly smiling, hardly looking ill.

Rick introduced her.”Our new Technical Director, Calista Ridley. Everyone, meet her, let’s all get along.”

Melissa’s face registered surprise.

Her gaze darted between Calista and me before bowing politely, “Nice to meet you, Calista.”

I remained silent, clutching my resignation letter.

Rick glared at me.”Daisy Ford, everyone greeted the new director. What’s your attitude?”

Calista chuckled, extending her hand.”We’ll be working in the same company. Please, let’s be cordial.”

As Calista feigned a handshake, her nails elongated into claws, leaving three bleeding scratches on my palm.

Rick pulled her back, a possessive growl in his throat.

“She’s the director; some lowly employee doesn’t deserve her attention. Come, I’ll show

They left, leaving me standing there, a hand outstretched, like a fool.
