Chapter 6

After getting the divorce certificate, I walked to the curb to hail a cab.

Harvey pulled up in front of me. “Where to? I’ll give you a ride.”

I looked at him, hinting at something. “Mr. Sullivan, I’m already divorced from John.”

“So?”

“So we were never really connected. No reason to start now.”

He hooked a finger, pulling down the sunglasses on his nose, revealing a pair of half-squinted, charming eyes.

He had that charming kind of face-eyes slightly upturned, narrowed just enough to make it feel like he had every- thing under control.

“Ms. Castillo, I helped you get divorced. Kind of cold to cut me off like this, no?”

I kept a wary look in my eyes.

He shrugged and changed his tone.

“Ms. Castillo, let’s talk business.

“Now that the company’s all yours, I can finally work with peace of mind.”

I hesitated.

The Sullivan Group was a giant. Partnering with him could only benefit me.

I opened the car door and got into the passenger seat.

“Why is it you can only trust me with the company now?”

Harvey glanced at me and gave a short laugh. “I know exactly what that adopted nephew of mine is worth.

“He can make small money. But big money…”

He didn’t finish, but I got it.

All those years building the company with John, his biggest asset was the surname that people were wary of.

Most of the time, he just played CEO while fooling around. The real deals-the ones that kept the company alive— were all mine.

“The contract’s on my lap. Take a look.”

My eyes dropped to the papers resting near his thigh. I hesitated. “Mr. Sullivan, can you hand it to me?”

“I’m driving. Can’t take my hands off the wheel.”

I coughed awkwardly, reached over, pinched the corner of the contract between my thumb and finger, and quickly pulled it over to my side.

Everything in the contract was fair.

But for someone like Harvey, fairness meant he was losing out.

I closed the folder.

“Mr. Sullivan, let’s cut the crap. You’re offering generous terms-what exactly do you want from me?”

He kept his eyes on the road, tone steady. “I want you to lead the project yourself.”

I was surprised but nodded. “Of course. With a deal this big, I’d handle it personally anyway.”

As soon as I finished speaking, he handed me a pen.

I remembered how he’d just made me grab the contract myself and rolled my eyes internally. Still, I took the signed cleanly.

“To celebrate our new partnership, how about dinner?”

and

I didn’t say no.

We were working together now-no point refusing.

He pulled up to a Cajun restaurant.

I paused when I saw the name.

Harvey stood behind me. “Why are you spacing out? Don’t you love Cajun food?”

“I haven’t had it in four years…”

Four years with John-he couldn’t eat spicy food, so I never stepped into a Cajun restaurant.

Harvey tugged on my hoodie’s drawstring and chuckled. “Then tonight we celebrate your divorce. You’re having Ca- jun food.”

I laughed too-and ordered enough food to cover the whole table.

Over dinner, we went over some details of the partnership. Everything felt easy, even pleasant.

By the time we finished, it was completely dark.

Harvey insisted on driving me home.

But just as we arrived, I saw an unexpected figure at my doorstep.

John was sitting there, shivering in the cold. His eyes lit up when he saw me.

“Wennie, you’re back!”
