Chapter 7

Sylvan’s POV

Somehow, the Hacketts and the Fergusons-two of the most powerful names in the capital- caught wind of my startup company. They each threw in a hundred million dollars, investing in my company for just 20% of the shares.

And then, my entire company’s total assets barely added up to a few million.

The news caused a huge sensation across all of Baton Rouge.

But then I met Mitzi. I got caught up in her gentle ways and, over time, forgot all about Cicely.

Later, as the Armitage Group finally gained a firm foothold in the capital, I started forgetting a whole lot more.

Now, I stared at Cicely. “Wait… are you saying you were the one investing in my company all along?” I shook my head in disbelief. “No. That’s impossible!”

‘If it was really you,” I considered, “then why didn’t you show up back when I met Mitzi and stop ne?”

But she simply gave me a small shake of my head like she was too tired to explain any more to

‘Dr. Baxter,” called out the man on the side, “can we finally see what you’re really capable of?”

Sure,” she replied confidently.

Cicely, stop trying to scare me with this act!” I shouted. “This is Baton Rouge! I don’t believe you could turn the sky upside down here!”

My face contorted. My fingers dug so deep into my palm, they nearly broke skin. “I’m calling someone right now. I’m going to find out what kind of monster you really are!”

picked up my phone, but admittedly, I hesitated on who to call.

Before I could decide, a call came in.

froze for a second, but then I answered it.

Sylvan! Are you fucking insane? If you wanna die, go die on your own! Why the hell are you Iragging me down with you?!”

A furious roar erupted from the other end.

M-Mr. Hackett! What do you mean by that?” I asked nervously.

You’ve been living way too damn comfortably these past few years! Have you forgotten you vere just a damn average employee we helped back then?” he erupted.

O-Of course, l-I didn’t forget… But Mr. Hackett, who… who’s that person that even you can’t afford o offend?” I asked desperately.

How the hell should I know?” he snapped. “All I know is someone powerful told me to help you out, so invested in your company without question!”

‘But now, that same guy just tore into me on the phone like I was a worthless mutt, screaming at ne for causing him so much trouble!” he vented out. “His boss gave him hell because of you! You better deal with your own mess now, Sylvan!”

With that, the call was abruptly cut off.

I was dumbfounded. How powerful was that mysterious person, that even someone like Mr. Hackett would obey them without question-and now, that same person was furious with him because of me?

Before I could process it, another call came in, this time from the head of the Fergusons.

And this one sounded even more furious. He straight up said if his family went down because of this, he’d take me to the grave with him.

I collapsed to the floor in utter despair.

Sage’s POV

I rushed over and helped him up, my voice tight with nervousness. “P-President? Who the hell is that bitch exactly working with?”

“It’s over. Everything’s over…” he murmured bitterly to himself.

I scowled, cursing silently in my head. ‘This is exactly what happens when a rags-to-riches nobody gets scared at the first sign of trouble! What a pathetic mess!’

Just as I was about to keep questioning this dumbass, my phone buzzed with a notification.

blurted out, “You’ve got to be kidding me…”

After reading the message, I too fell limply to the ground, my face probably pale as a ghost.

The Hacketts and the Fergusons had just issued a joint statement-they were officially pulling all their investments out of Armitage Group!

They also declared that they’d never do business with the company again!

Just like that… the stocks of Armitage Group plummeted instantly!
