on?”
Panic clenched his chest. He stumbled to
their bedroom. Empty.
All of Amy’s things were gone. Except fór a
box on the floor.
He opened it. Inside were the gifts he and his
mom had given her.
And the divorce papers, staring up at him.
His hand shook as he picked them up,
confusion and shock warring on his face.
The housekeeper said she heard Amy leave
last night.
David remembered a fleeting shadow at the
く
door while he was kissing Sarah.
Ice coursed through his veins. He stood there,
frozen.
Then he saw the medical report. Another
blow.
Amy had a miscarriage? He hadn’t even
known she was pregnant.
Sarah rushed in, seeing his distress.
“David, is Amy mad? I can talk to her.”
“I’ll explain everything. Chloe and I will
leave…”
“Shut up!” David roared, the first time he’d
ever yelled at Sarah.
L
His face was tight with rage.
He turned to ask his mom about the letter.
She smacked him with her cane. He gasped.
His mom had just been discharged. She’d
come home to the letter.
And found her son in bed with her
stepdaughter.
She lashed out, hitting him again and again.
“You’re both disgusting! You’re ruining this
family!”
“Brother and sister! I’m ashamed to face your
father!”
<
Sarah’s face burned. David seemed to snap
out of it.
He bolted, grabbing his car keys, desperate
to find Amy.
The rain was torrential. Distracted and frantic,
he lost control.
His car collided with another. The screech of
brakes filled the air.
Sarah and his mom screamed.
“David!”
“David!”
At the hospital, his face was covered in blood,
<
his voice slurred.
“Amy… Wait for me… I’m coming…”
Hearing him call Amy’s name, Sarah felt a
pang of jealousy mixed with fear.
Things were spiraling out of control.
“David, wake up. It’s Sarah. I’m here.”
He woke up screaming Amy’s name again,
trapped in another nightmare.
Amy was leaving him.
“David, you liar! I’ll never forgive you…”
The memory of the divorce papers hit him.
Regret twisted in his gut.
ᄀ
“Amy… I didn’t mean to lie. Don’t leave me…”
Sarah fussed over him. “David, you’re awake! Does your head hurt?”
“The doctor said it’s a concussion. You need
to rest. Don’t think too much…”
He ignored her and swung his legs out of
bed.
“David, where are you going? You can’t
leave!”
He pushed her aside.
“Get out of my way! I have to find Amy! She’s
waiting for me!”
く
Sarah fell, tears welling up.
David didn’t look back, stumbling out of the
room.
