Chapter 185

Esther watched Mia walk out, still bowing politely as she left the office

She didn’t miss the stiffness in Mia’s shoulders, or the way she kept her head low. There was grace in the way she carried herself, but also something elselike someone who had learned how to stay quiet, how to disappear into the background even when standing right in front

of you

Esther’s eyes followed her until the door clicked shut

She let out a deep breath she had not realized she was holding and slowly sank back into her chair

Mia is as clueless as it gets. She doesn’t know Alex owns this company, and it seems she is also right about how they left. Something more happened that made them leave Willowcrest the way they did

She had thought it was a mistake when she first saw her name

When she saw her walk in for the interview, she almost cancelled it right there. Almost told security to escort her out. But something stopped

her

Maybe it was how calm and quiet she looked, like she wasn’t even aware of the trouble her presence was about to cause

Maybe it was how she smiled, a little shy but respectful. Or maybe it was the sadness Esther thought she saw in her eyes, the kind of sadness

that doesn’t leave a person, no matter how much time has passed

She wanted to know more but didn’tMore about why she left Willowcrest without a word. More about what had really happened between

her and Alex

She couldn’t just ask her that directly

She did get another shocker though.

She has a son….

Three years old

Three years

Could it be

No. No, the timing didn’t match. Mia left almost 5 years ago. If the child was really Alex’s, the math didn’t quite add up

But still…

What if she was wrong

What if there were things she didn’t knowWhat if the dates were just a little off? People hide things. People run when they’re scared. What if Mia had been running

Esther rubbed her hands together nervously. She had done everything she could to hold herself back during the interview

The questions she wanted to ask were burning in her throat, but she swallowed them down. She didn’t want to scare her off. Not yet

Not when there was even the slightest chance that boy could be her grandson

She couldn’t lie to herself. That was the reason she had not thrown her out. The reason she had insisted on meeting her personally. She needed to see her up close. To look into her eyes and see if she could find the truth in them

And the truth wasshe didn’t know what to believe

Mia was perfect for the job. On paper and in person. She was smart, calm, and collected

She had the kind of presence you want in someone you can trust. And the truth was, Esther did trust her for some weird reason

Even though she was the same girl who had left her son shattered, even though she has not given any explanation for the pain she caused

Still, there was something about her

Something that felt right

And if she let her walk out of here, she knew she would regret it. So she couldn’t. Not when there is a child involved. Not when there is a chance, no matter how slim, that that child might share her blood

So she made a decision

She wasn’t going to rush anything. She wasn’t going to confront Mia just yet

There were too many unanswered questions, too many emotions flying around. She had to be careful. She had to think

But one thing was clear, she wants her here

She needs her close…

To watch her….

Esther folded her arms and stared at the door Mia had just walked through

The fact she still didn’t recognize her was funny, just how much did she change. Did the low cut and glasses change her that much

She sighs again already thinking about how Alex will take this

Maybe it was fate. Maybe Mia was meant to come back into their lives. Maybe it was time for old wounds to heal and new beginnings to take shape

Maybe it was time for Alex and Mia to find their way back to each other or get their closure

She had done her part. The part she felt was meant for her to play in this strange, unexpected story

Now, she could only hope it was the right part

She stares at her phone, the bigger problem awaits her, she needs to tell Alex and she needs to tell him today

She wants him to be prepared for their inevitable meeting

In the end Alex has the final say for who stays and who goes

We need to talk‘

She types and hits the send button
