Halsey’s heart suddenly started pounding. She looked up at him, and their eyes met across the crowded room.
They didn’t say a word, but that look said everything–like a sweet wave washing over her.
She answered loudly, “Here!”
Shaun’s lips curled into a tiny, almost unnoticed smile before he kept calling out names.
Thump, thump!
Halsey could hear her crazy heartbeat.
After attendance, Shaun started the lesson. Today was a culture class, and this handsome, confident guy spoke from the front
with charm and knowledge. Even the driest stuff came alive when he talked, so everyone was hooked.
Soon, Shaun said, “Alright, everyone. Let’s talk about something. What do you think love is?”
That was the interactive part, and hands shot up everywhere, all wanting to answer.
Shaun picked a boy near the front. “You, answer the question.”
The boy grinned. “Mr. Lane, can I ask, do you have a girlfriend?”
The question caused an instant uproar.
The boy quickly added, “Don’t get me wrong–I’m totally straight. The girls around me made me ask!”
One bold girl piped up, “Since we’re talking about love, then tell us Do you have a girlfriend?”
“Yeah, tell us! We really want to know if you’re taken!”
Everyone was buzzing, trying to get Shaun to spill about his love life.
The girls around Halsey whispered excitedly, “What do you think? Does Mr. Lane have a girlfriend?”
“Seriously? Of course he does! A guy like Mr. Lane–handsome and rich–he’s gotta be snapped up already.”
“Maybe he’s single?”
“Come on. You just want him to be single so you can be his girlfriend!”
“Don’t you like Mr. Lane?”
Their eyes sparkled. Sure, guys were everywhere, but good ones were as rare as diamonds. That made the fight for them real.
Halsey looked at Shaun, curious about how he would answer.
Shaun waved his hand, telling everyone to quiet down.
Shh…
The room went silent.
Then, he said, “Since you’re all so interested in my personal life, I be honest–I do have a girlfriend.”
Disappointment washed over the girls like a wave.
He had a girlfriend.
Shaun continued, “And I’ve actually proposed to her, but she hasnt said yes yet.”
