“Oh my god!”
Someone gasped and shouted, “Look over there!”
Heads turned. All eyes locked on Sierra, groveling before Halsey.
“Why is she groveling?”
“Who even is she?”
“I think she’s that new transfer student, Sierra. I heard her family’s in rough shape. A few days ago, her gambling dad showed up here, making a scene. He was trying to sell her off to some old guy for money.”
“That’s awful! Poor girl.”
“But why’s she groveling? Let’s go check it out.”
Students started gathering around.
Halsey had no choice but to stop walking and turn back toward Sierra.
Zada was stunned. She rushed forward and tried to pull Sierra up. “What are you doing? There are so
many people here! Why embarrass yourself like this? Get up before everyone laughs at you!”
But Sierra knew this was her chance. After failing to win Shaun over and ending up in the hospital, she
wasn’t about to let things slide. She wanted to stir things up and get some kind of advantage from Halsey.
She pinched herself hard, forcing tears to spill from her eyes. “It’s okay, Zada. It’s my fault. I did wrong. I
should grovel before Halsey.”
Zada’s face darkened as she glared at Halsey. “Haven’t you had enough? You should learn to forgive. Why
are you picking on Sierra?”
Halsey almost laughed at the absurdity. “Did I ever ask you to grovel?”
Through her sobs, Sierra said, “No, you didn’t make me, I wanted to. I hurt you. This is all my fault.”
The crowd buzzed.
“Sierra, what happened?”
“Did you and Halsey have some kind of misunderstanding?”
Tears streamed down Sierra’s face as she spoke. “Halsey is my best friend. When my dad came here and tried to drag me away to marry an old man, she took me in and let me stay at her place.”
The students murmured among themselves.

“Well, that was nice of her. Then why are you two fighting?”

Sierra sniffled. “That night at her house, I went to look for her, but she wasn’t around. Instead, I ran into her fiancé. He hit me in the head with a bottle, and I ended up in the hospital. But Halsey thought I was
trying to seduce him!”
“What?!”
The students gasped and turned to Halsey in shock.
“I think you misunderstood Sierra.”
“Her life is awful enough. I doubt she’d ever do something like that.”
“If it’s just a misunderstanding. You guys should clear it up and go back to being friends.”
Everyone started urging Halsey to make peace.
Halsey looked at Sierra, who gazed back at her with watery eyes. But behind those tears was the faintest, taunting smile.
She was provoking Halsey.
Even though Sierra hadn’t managed to hook Shaun, she could still make Halsey’s life miserable.
Halsey let out a cold laugh. “Looks like I really did misunderstand you. You should get up.”
Sierra’s face lit up. “So you forgive me?”
Halsey nodded. “When your dad beat you and tried to sell you to some old man, I felt sorry for you. That
was why I brought you home.
“That night, I asked the housekeeper to set up the guest room so you could rest early. I stayed downstairs working on my designs. Later, my fiancé came home and went upstairs to shower. I don’t know how it happened, but when I went up, I found you in the master bathroom.
“He was still in the shower, and you were sitting on the floor in a spaghetti–strap nightgown. Maybe it really was just a coincidence.”
