Chapter 6
- 6.
I spent three days in the hospital.
The shock was too much, and the recurring high fever kept me bedridden for three days.
Frank stayed by my side every moment those three days.
It left me dazed.
As if seeing the Frank who’d fret over the slightest scratch I got.
Frank scooped congee and brought it to my lips. “Eat some.
You haven’t had anything in ages.
I stared at him silently.
Finally, I opened my mouth and finished every last drop.
A knock came at the door.
My pupils shrank when I saw who it was.
Amanda walked in, flashing me a smile.
“Catherine, I came to check on you.”
“Thanks to Amy, Tommy recovered so quickly.”
“The doctor says he can be discharged in a couple days.”
My voice turned shrill, desperate to tear that fake smile off her face.
“Get out!”
“Out!
Who let you in?!

Get out!”
Thinking how her son caused my daughter’s suffering.
I wanted to slaughter both snakes to avenge my Amy.
I grabbed the bowl and hurled it–Frank shielded Amanda.
The bowl shattered on the floor, blood seeping from his forehead.
He told Amanda quietly, “Leave first.”
Amanda’s eyes reddened at his wound.
“Let’s get the doctor to bandage that.”
Frank glanced at me. “No need. Go.”
Amanda left, the door clicking shut.
Frank looked at me. “Don’t take this out on her. Blame me, Catherine.”
“It’s not her fault.”
I stared, then burst into bitter laughter.
How pathetic!
Frank actually took all the blame to protect Amanda. How noble.
Late that night, the door creaked open.
Amanda strolled in, eyeing my misery with relish.
“Look at you now!”
“Can’t even protect your own daughter. Pathetic.”
“But…” She paused with a venomous smile. “Thanks for your kid’s blood.”
“Pity it went to waste–flushed down the toilet.”
My mind went blank.
Amanda’s words exploded in my ears.

She whispered, grinning, “Never thought Frank would go this far for Tommy–draming his own daughter.”
“Your girl’s still lying next door.”
“Almost didn’t make it.”
Amanda laughed, wild and mocking.
Only when she left did I feel tears soaking my face.
My Amy, suffering for nothing.
Almost lost forever.
I walked next door, gazing at my Amy.
Amanda lied–the doctor said Amy was out of danger, just waiting to wake.
Watching her, I begged silently: Wake up soon.
Mommy’s waiting for you.
Amanda and her son were discharged quickly.
That day, she paraded the boy before me.
“Tommy, thank Auntie.”
She beamed. “Without her, you might’ve never seen Mommy again.”
Amanda’s voice dripped poison.
The boy called Tommy rolled his eyes at me. “Why thank her?
Didn’t even use her blood.”
Like mother, like son.
I clenched my fist tightly but still told myself to hold back.
The time hadn’t come yet.
That evening, Frank sent me a message saying he couldn’t come to be with me tonight.

I didn’t reply.
Expressionlessly, I refreshed the Facebook
Amanda’s Facebook from a minute ago popped up.
“Thanks to my husband for giving our son a second life”
The accompanying picture showed the back view of a family of three.
I recognized that the man’s back was Frank’s.
My eyes stung slightly, and I held back to keep tears from falling.
I went next door, opened the door, and went in to see Tommy.
Chatted with her.
Until Amy’s eyelids fluttered and then slowly opened.
I widened my eyes, tears plopping down.
Amy looked at me with effort.
“Mommy…”
I covered my mouth, not letting myself cry out.
Amy’s eyes were red.
She, through the breathing mask, silently said:
“Don’t cry…”
The doctor came to check, found that Amy was fine, and then I couldn’t hold back crying out.
The emotions suppressed during this time completely erupted at that moment.
I buried my head, as if I would cry until the world turned upside down.
