I thought Rowan had come to save ine.
But he didn’t even look at me. He ran straight to the corner and grabbed the keyboard piano.
It was Sage’s favorite keyboard that had somehow ended up in my room.
As he passed me, Rowan paused.
The firelight lit up his twisted face, his emotions unreadable.
‘Stay here and think about what you’ve done, Mia!”
Then he rushed out of the fire without a backward glance.
The flames licked at my skin, burning agony spreading through me.
I closed my eyes in despair.
So in his heart, my life wasn’t even worth a piano.
When I woke up again, I was surrounded by the sharp smell of hospital disinfectant.
I was wrapped up like a mummy, burns covering most of my body.
Mom and Dad sat by my bed, looking equally tired and disgusted.
‘Doctor, when’s she gonna wake up?” That was Dad.
She breathed in a lot of smoke, and with the burns… it’s not looking good. You guys need to be ready for anything.”
That little disaster!” Dad whispered. “Never should’ve taken her in!”
Mom didn’t say anything, just stared at me with ice–cold eyes.
age was there too, head wrapped in bandages, arm in a cast, crying in Rowan’s arms.
Rowan, this is all on me. I never should’ve gone in there… Look at her now, this is all my fault…”
‘Stop it, this isn’t on you.” Rowan gently patted her back. “She was being crazy jealous, tried to torch your college etter. Curtains went up.”
‘I ran in there to get her out, and you got clocked by that light trying to help me.”
With just a few words, he’d pinned all the blame on me.
Chapter 4
Listening to them twist the truth, I was shaking with rage.
I tried to speak, but my throat was smoke damaged–I couldn’t make a sound.
All I could do was watch helplessly as Rowan took Sage back to her room.
Dad walked over to my bed, looking down at me.
“Mia, you got some nerve just lying there?!”
“Sage got a concussion trying to save your ass, almost got her face messed up! You know those hands play piano, right? If they scar up, that’s on YOU!”
“How the hell did we end up with such an ungrateful little snake!”
Mom came over too, looking at me like I was her enemy.
“Why’d you have to mess with Sage? She’s our only shot at a good life–you wreck her and you wreck all of us!”
“Doctor says Sage needs blood right now, but the hospital’s running low. Your dad and brother aren’t a match.”
She paused, something dark flickering in her eyes.
“Rowan’s always said you’re not really ours, right? Perfect–let’s test her blood again. If she’s not related to any of us, then we’ll know for sure.”
“After that, Mia can leave this family and fend for herself!”
Looking at Mom’s cold, final expression, my heart turned to ice.
They didn’t disbelieve Rowan’s lies–they just didn’t want to tear off their fake caring masks.
Even though they’d already decided Sage was their real daughter.
They still needed one more blood test to let me voluntarily leave this family.
They wanted to use this method to get a result that would let them sleep peacefully at night.
A nurse quickly drew blood from both me and Sage, though they didn’t tell her what it was for.
Soon after, the doctor came in looking urgent, holding several test results.
“Mr. and Mrs. Castellano, I’m not sure if I should mention this, but…”
Mom nodded at the doctor.
“Is something wrong with my daughter?”

The doctor looked at the report and frowned.
“Both young ladies are healthy. But there’s one thing–if both parents are Type B, how can the child be Type A?”
