Chapter 225

Ellie’s POV

“What do you think?” Sarah held up the flags she had just spent the last hour working on. One was bright red with yellow lines cutting back and forth through it, and the other was white and black checkered.

I tapped my chin, studying the flags, then nodded. “Those are perfect. We’ll make the vests with the same colors. Thank you.”

My friend grinned and set the flags into the box labeled “Capture the Flag”, then picked up the to-do list and ticked that off. Looking at me through her lashes, she said, “I can’t believe Dominic tried to make Vivian your assistant.”

“Technically,” I said, lowering my voice so as not to be overheard, she still is.” Dominic wasn’t aware of our little competition, or so I assumed. I certainly wasn’t going to be the one to make him find out.

Sarah rolled her eyes. “Well, you’re doing just fine on your own, clearly.”

“Thanks to you,” I laughed.

She smiled and stood, stretching. “Well, speaking of which, I need to dash. Want me to pick up those cake samples from the bakery while I’m out?”

“That’s okay. I’ll get them later. Thank you, Sarah. You’ve been a huge help today.”

“I know.” My friend, still smiling, ruffled my hair-messing up my braid, much to my chagrin and left after that. I stayed there for a while longer with my tongue stuck out in concentration as I carefully arranged the letters on the sign I was making.

Finally, after what could have been five minutes or an hour, I sat back in my chair and stretched, making my spine crack audibly. Must have been an hour. I picked up my sign and studied it, then nodded to myself and added it to the box before ticking “Make Sign” off the list.

With two days left until the festival, I still had a lot left to do. But everything was coming along perfectly so far; I had the menu for the feast figured out with all of the ingredients ordered. The games-capture the flag for the adults, pin the tail on the wolf for the kids, and kickball for everyone-were ready to go. Over a dozen vendors from the pack had been met with, all confirming their participation, with the locations for their booths already rented out and waiting for them with yellow tape.

I had done it mostly on my own, too. With no Vivian as my assistant despite Dominic’s insistence. And despite everything, in an unexpected sort of way, I was proud of that.

I didn’t expect to find such purpose in these festival preparations. Initially, this whole thing had been nothing more than a way to get back at Dominic and Vivian, to prove myself as fully capable and belittle them to the point of finally being strong enough to initiate a divorce and force Dominic to let me go.

But as time went on and the festival drew closer, I found myself becoming more involved in the preparations than I had initially planned. In fact, there was a certain joy in it that I never expected to find.

In my past life, in the beginning of the marriage, I had found some joy in my Luna duties. But not like this; everything was always tinged with Dominic’s disapproval and Vivian’s meddling.

Quickly, I stopped finding any enjoyment in my work, and it became more of a burden than anything.

This time was different, though. Maybe it was because I didn’t see Dominic much this time around, as he found himself busier than usual with some unexpected meetings and paperwork.

Or maybe, this time, I was simply different. Rather than letting my anxiety about the future take hold of me like before, turning me meek and exhausted and sick, I was finally taking hold of it, and it felt… good. Not like letting go, but rather like grabbing onto my own fate and refusing to let anyone else control it.
