Mia chuckled softly, shaking her head as she stared at Alex, the corners of her lips pulling into a small smile.
“I used to hate it when you call me that,” she said, her voice carrying a mix of old memories and a quiet honesty.
Alex’s lips curved, but there was no arrogance in it, no teasing. Just a tired, broken kind of smile. “Understandable,” he murmured, his gaze never leaving her face. “I used to call it with hate.”
His eyes dropped, almost against his will, to her lips. The way they parted, the way she bit down on the bottom one, like she always did when she didn’t know what else to do.
Mia caught herself, biting her lip on instinct, her chest tightening at the way his eyes darkened.
“I was really a jerk to you back then,” Alex admitted, his voice low, heavy with
Mia only nodded. She didn’t need to say the words. They both knew the truth.
For a long moment, he just stared at her.
regret.
Then, slowly, Alex stepped back, creating a space between them. His movements were controlled, but his chest rose and fell as though he was carrying something too heavy to hide.
“I can understand why you want nothing with me again,” he said finally, his voice cracking at the end.
“You’re right,” Mia replied, her voice calm but trembling faintly, as though the words themselves hurt to say. She shifted slightly, forcing herself to keep her eyes on him. “Plus…” she hesitated, drawing in a shaky breath, “I’m scared to death of your father.”
He turned slowly, staring at her as though he could see the fear still etched into her bones. His hands twitched at his sides before he moved again, walking back toward her.
“I’m sorry for everything, Mia,” Alex said, each word pulled from deep inside of him. His throat tightened. “For how I was to you, for what my father did to you… and for not coming to you when I found out where you were.” His voice broke there, the shame too much to carry in silence.
Mia stilled, her eyes narrowing in confusion. She looked at him carefully, her brows drawing together.
“You found out where I was?” she asked slowly, her voice almost whispering.
Alex’s chest tightened. He looked away from her, unable to face the storm in her eyes. “I did.”
Mia let out a sound between a laugh and a sob, her chest rising sharply. “I knew it,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “I just knew you didn’t find me because you didn’t want to.” She shook her head, her voice rising with the weight of years. “I mean–you’re freaking Alex Blackwell.”
She got down from the table she’d been sitting on, eyes still fixed on Alex.
“I thought you left because you didn’t want me….” Alex says

“I was scared to find you ‘cause I was scared of what you’d say to me….I was an idiot for not coming to you and facing you.”
Mia turned away from him walking toward the window.
The silence stretched between them. She didn’t say anything else.
Alex watched her carefully…. Then he moved slowly toward her. When he was close enough, he stretched out his hands carefully and wrapped them around her waist.
Mia didn’t move. She said nothing. She only stared out the window.
“I’m sorry, baby,” Alex repeated, his voice hoarse against her ear.
Mia finally turned in his arms. Her hands lifted almost on their own, resting against his chest. It was becoming a familiar place for her hands to land, and for a moment, she let herself feel the steady beat of his heart under her palm.
“Thank you for being honest,” Mia whispered, her eyes searching his face.
“You’re not angry?” Alex asked, his voice fragile, almost boyish…
“I’m tired of being angry,” she admitted softly, her shoulders falling.
Alex stared at her, his chest aching at the truth in her voice. He could see the exhaustion in her
“I want to be with you too,” she continued, her voice trembling, “but I’m still scared of your father, Alex.”
“You don’t have to be, baby,” Alex said quickly, pulling her closer, desperate for her to believe him.
Mia shook her head. “Alex, he is still trying to get you all back to Willowcrest. He hates me, and I’m sure he will hate my son too.”
Alex’s heart clenched at her words. He stared at her, then lifted his hands, cupping her face gently, forcing her eyes to meet his.
“I have money, I have power, I have connections, Mia,” Alex said firmly. His voice carried a sharp edge of conviction. “My father can try, but I won’t let him hurt you or our son. Never.”
“Alex, your father-” she started, her voice shaky.
“I know,” Alex cut in, his voice softer now, almost pleading. “I know. But I won’t let him hurt you ever again. I promise.”
Mia searched his eyes, her chest rising and falling slowly.
“That’s a big promise,” she whispered, her voice weak.
“One I intend to do everything in my power to keep,” Alex answered without hesitation.
Mia stared at him, her eyes glassy, her breath trembling.

Alex lowered his forehead against hers, his arms locking around her waist like he was terrified she’d slip away. His voice came out low, barely a whisper against her lips.
“I miss you,” he breathed, his eyes closing as the words left him.
Mia’s lips trembled. She bit them hard, trying to stop herself, but she couldn’t. The words came out, soft and broken.
“I miss you,” she whispered back, her lips brushing against his as she spoke.
Alex’s smile was small, but it reached his eyes. Then he leaned in, his lips capturing hers.
Mia’s hands moved around his neck, holding on tight as Alex pulled her closer, his body pressing against hers like he was afraid she’d disappear if he let go.
“Please be mine,” Alex whispered against her lips, kissing her again, his words almost a plea.
When they finally pulled away, their eyes stayed locked together. Neither moved, neither spoke, as if the moment itself was too fragile to break.
Mia nodded, her lips trembling.
Alex’s chest swelled, his smile spreading wide as he kissed her again, softer this time, slower, as though sealing the promise she had just made.
“One condition though,” Mia said between breaths, her lips brushing against his.
“Name it, baby,” Alex replied instantly, smiling so wide it almost hurt his face.
Mia chuckled softly. She reached up, her fingers brushing against his lips before she held them together, pressing lightly. She leaned forward, pecking them before letting go.
“No one can know we are dating for now,” Mia said.
Alex didn’t even ask why. He didn’t argue, didn’t question. He just nodded once, quick and sure before crashing his lips against hers again.
