Chapter 211

But it was the way she mentioned divorce at every moment she could that was the worst.

Divorce. As if we hadn’t fucking said our vows a few days ago.

The pack was figuring it out, too. People were starting to notice the chance in Ellie. How she seemed to loathe her duties. How she stayed away as much as possible. How she couldn’t even seem to bear my

presence.

It was starting to give us a reputation. Mostly, it made me look like a chump.

I was the Alpha in a marriage with no love. Our union was beginning to be seen as volatile, and Marcus told me that people were talking. Saying that we wouldn’t last long, that Ellie only married me to get something out of me, and once she did, she’d leave.

Some even said she was cheating on me.

I tried not to entertain that notion.

“Don’t forget that the summer festival is coming up, by the way,” Marcus said, glancing at me as we made our way back to the main house. “It’s in just a couple of weeks. You might want to go all out given the recent

.. rumors.”

I sighed, scrubbing both hands over my face.

“Is a single festival really going to convince people that my marriage is stable?” I asked.

He shrugged one shoulder. “At the very least, if the Luna performs her duty and puts on a good show by your side, the instability won’t be quite as glaring.”

My Beta was right, as much as I hated to admit it. An Alpha and Luna’s marriage, especially amongst mated pairs like us, often dictated the pack’s stability as a whole. Without unified, happy leaders, the entire pack could suffer. It was in our blood-looking up to and trusting the Alpha and Luna, who should have been stable and loving, a sign of a fruitful future for the pack.

However, planning things like festivals and parties was often the Luna’s duty, at least in part. Ellie had done a bang-on job of shirking her duties so far, but if we were going to make a statement at this festival, she would have to step up.

I found her in the kitchen. She was making herself a sandwich in a tupperware, clearly planning to leave. Probably for the healer academy.

I stopped in the doorway, blocking her exit.

“Ellie,” I said, refusing to acknowledge the awkwardness after last night and deciding to just get right to it, “the summer festival is coming up. How are the preparations going?”

“Preparations?” She didn’t look at me.

“There’s a whole list of things that need to get done,” I said. “Typically, the Luna is in charge of them. You can delegate, but it needs to get done.”

“I’m busy. I’ve got studying to do.”

“Ellie…”

“Find someone else to do it,” she said curtly. She slammed the lid onto her tupperware, then brushed past me, quite literally shoving her way by, and walked out of the house without a word.

Marcus and I stood there, staring at the spot where she’d been. Whatever brief feelings of tenderness I’d felt that morning were quickly snuffed out, that was for sure.

“Alpha?” Marcus looked at me, a question in his eyes.

“Contact Vivian,” I said without hesitating.

He nodded and left. Having Vivian come to fill in for Ellie wasn’t exactly the most ideal situation, but right now, it was all I had. And deep down, I couldn’t help but feel a small pang of satisfaction at the thought of Ellie’s sour reaction once she found out. Serves her right for being like this.

Indeed, later that day, Vivian arrived with a smile and a whole binder of plans. She got right to work without me even asking.
