Mia spent hours trying to explain to Aiden what Mama and Papa were doing earlier and why.
It wasn’t an easy task, not with Aiden’s curious little eyes blinking up at her every two seconds, and not with Alex sitting there acting like this was the funniest thing in the world.
She sighed, leaning back against the seat, sneaking a look at Alex’s side profile. He looked so calm now, his strong hand resting on the wheel as he drove, his eyes focused on the road.
For a moment she just studied him quietly, trying to memorize the lines of his face, the shape of his lips.
“You’re okay?” Alex asked suddenly, glancing at her for just a moment before looking back at the road.
Mia nodded quickly. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
Right now, they were heading to Ethan’s place. Mia had gotten a call earlier, her mom and Anna had just arrived.
Mia was excited, of course. She hadn’t seen her mom in weeks.
But at the same time, she was nervous. Nervous because Lily was also there, she didn’t know how she will react towards her.
The thought of what she did still makes her angry.
Yes it turned out well, but what if it didn’t?
She can’t avoid her forever though.
When she got the call she had to go…..
Alex had offered to drive them back, and Mia had been grateful for that.
Aiden at the back was talking excitedly about how much he wanted to tell his grandmother and aunt Ann everything. His little voice filled all the car, his words tumbling over each other.
Mia smiled softly at the sound. Her son had such an infectious energy. He made everything brighter.
Her eyes drifted back to the window, but her mind had a mind of its own. It drifted further ahead….further. than Ethan’s house, further than this drive. It drifted into the future, into the thought that soon, she would be married to Alex.
The thought made her chest tighten in the best way possible. A small smile tugged at her lips, and her heart swelled with happiness.
“What are you smiling about?” Alex’s voice broke into her daydream.
Mia chuckled, shaking her head a little.

“Your son is right there. Have some shame!” she whispered harshly, leaning closer so Aiden wouldn’t hear.
Alex laughed out loud, not the least bit ashamed.
“What? I was just talking about you liking how I was moving around,” he said, his eyes glued to the road but his lips curving into a smile. “What exactly were you thinking, Turner?”
Mia’s mouth fell open. She glared at him.
“Moving… what?… Don’t you dare lie. You know exactly what you wanted to say.”
Alex kept his face perfectly neutral, like he was the most innocent man in the world.
“And what’s that?” he asked in the calmest tone, his voice dripping with fake innocence.
Mia threw her hands up, a chuckle slipping past her mouth. “I can’t believe this.”
“Not my fault you have a corrupted mind, Mia,” Alex teased smoothly.
Then he glanced at her out of the corner of his eye and gave her a quick wink before returning his attention to the road.
Mia’s heart, of course, flipped. She turned her face away immediately, trying….and failing to hide the way that single wink had just messed her up inside.
The truth was, everything Alex did affected her. Everything. From the way he smiled, to the way he laughed, to the way he said her name in that deep voice. Alex Blackwell was too goddamn gorgeous for his own good.
“Mama,” Aiden’s sweet little voice piped up from the back.
“Yes, baby?”
“Will Grandma and aunt Lily and aunt Anna and Uncle Ethan live in Papa’s house?”
Mia hides her laughter behind her hand.
“That’s a lot of ‘and‘ baby”
Alex, on the other hand, was already laughing, shaking his head at their son’s innocence.
Mia coughed, regaining herself, then turned back to face Aiden. “Baby, everybody cannot come live in Daddy’s house”
“But I want them,” Aiden said with the biggest pout.
“They can’t, baby,” Mia explained gently, her voice soft. “They have their own houses.”

Alex froze. “What?”
“Who were they?” Mia repeated firmly. “Are they people I know?”

Alex shook his head quickly, raising his hands in surrender. “Stop saying it like that, baby, like it’s a lot of people. It wasn’t.”
“More than one person is people, Alex!” Mia snapped before turning and storming out.
Alex followed her immediately, still shirtless, his laughter trailing behind him.
When they reached the living room, Jullian was spread out on the couch. The moment he saw them, he smirked, his eyes darting from Mia’s flushed face to Alex’s half–dressed state.
Mia froze, her cheeks burning. Alex only smirked back at his brother.
Mia avoided Jullian’s eyes. “Where’s Aiden?”
Jullian’s smirk widened, not saying anything.
“Oh my god, Jullian, stop being a creep. Where’s my son?” Alex asked, rolling his eyes.
Jullian laughed. “Playroom. With his grandmother.”
Mia didn’t waste a second. She turned and headed straight there, ignoring Alex, who was still following behind her with that same irritatingly smug grin.
“Baby?” Alex called softly.
“Go put a shirt on, Blackwell,” Mia shot back, rolling her eyes.
Alex only chuckled, trailing after her like a shadow.
When they reached the playroom, Mia reached for the door handle. But before she could push it open, Alex caught her hand, pulling her back against his chest. She gasped, about to scold him, but he kissed her.
Mia pushed at his chest weakly. “Let me go,” she whispered.
“Baby,” Alex murmured, kissing her again, slower this time, his lips coaxing her to give in.
And of course, she did. She couldn’t resist him. She kissed him back, melting into him, her arms sliding up around his neck.
“Mama?”
“Papa?”
The voice froze them both.
Slowly, they turned their heads to see Aiden and Esther Blackwell standing in the doorway, staring at them.

Aiden stared at her, his little brows knitting together, clearly confused about why his grandmother, his aunts, and his uncle couldn’t just pack up and come live with him, his mama and his papa.
Mia stares at him softly.
“Baby, I told you, you can always go visit them whenever you want.”
Aiden stayed quiet for a few seconds, his little lips pressed together as if he was considering her words.
“Promise, Mama?”
“I promise, baby.”
“No way, Mia.”
Anna’s shocked voice rang through the living room. “You’re getting married to Alex Blackwell?”
Mia blinked, caught off guard at her reaction.
“I don’t see a ring, though,” Anna added, her tone laced with suspicion as she glanced at Mia’s hand.
“We just talked about it today,” Mia said.
They were all gathered in the living room. Aiden had fallen asleep, worn out from all the shouting and running he had done earlier. He had been glued to his grandmother and aunts the moment they walked in, telling them story after story until his little body had given up.
Alex had dropped them off, and told her to call him if she needed him.
Well here she is…
“I’m sorry, are we forgetting that Blackwell will come for us if you go anywhere near his son?” Anna pressed.
Mia’s jaw tightened. “What part of ‘they don’t have anything to do with each other‘ are you not grasping?” she said, already feeling her anger rise.
“Does it really matter? He’s still his son,” Anna argued.
Mia’s patience snapped. Her voice dropped lower, dead serious now. “I don’t see how any of this affects you. How about you go back, and as long as you’re not close to me, you’ll be fine.”
“I’m more worried about Aiden-”
“Don’t,” Mia warned sharply, her eyes narrowing.
The room grew tense.
“Let’s just calm down, okay?” her mother tried to cut in, her voice pleading.

Mia shook her head. “Look, I’m going to marry him. Whether you guys agree or not, I want to be with him. So if you want to cut ties with me so you can be safe from Charles Blackwell’s wrath, then so be it. I’m not leaving him. Never again.”
“No one is cutting anyone off,” Ethan said firmly, trying to steady the conversation.
“He’s dying though,” Lily said suddenly, speaking up for the first time that evening.
Everyone turned to her, confusion and shock written on their faces.
“Who?” their mom asked immediately.
“Charles Blackwell,” Lily said quietly, her expression unreadable. “I saw it in the news last night. He’s really sick.”
