“Don’t think I really won’t lay a hand on you!”
I struggled to get my voice out, “Then go ahead. All this talk just makes me feel like you
about me.”
Nicholas slammed me down to the ground, his face red with embarrassment.

“Forget it. Carol might have just acted on impulse. We just need to figure out what she put in that cup.”
Ariana told someone to rip the necklace off my neck.
“Check carefully what’s inside.”
After Mom passed away, I scattered her ashes into the sea like she wanted, but I kept a little bit sealed in this necklace.
“No! Don’t touch it!”
I grabbed onto Nicholas’s leg and pleaded, “I didn’t hurt anyone. Please, don’t mess with my mom’s ashes!”
“Ashes?”
Ariana looked really upset. “Carol, how could you make a joke about your own mom’s life? Are you just trying to save yourself from trouble?”
Nicholas kicked me aside, then opened the locket and dumped everything out.
“Someone like you is just beyond saving!”
I couldn’t see anything, so I had no way to gather up my mom’s ashes, and panic hit me hard.
“Good thing you won’t be at the wedding. You’re absolutely disgusting. Get her out of here now!”
Nicholas told his guys to throw me out.
Still thinking about my mom’s ashes, I wasn’t going to leave that easily.
Nicholas got even angrier. “You guys get her out of here fast!”

The bodyguards grabbed me and hurriedly dragged me away. Halfway through, I suddenly realized something was off.
They dragged me to a hidden spot and started ripping at my clothes.
Feeling the danger, I yelled out, “What do you want? Nicholas won’t let you get away with this!”
“Heh, does Nicholas even care about you?”
“Don’t you know? He’s the one who handed you over to us!”
At that moment, it felt like I’d been thrown into an ice–cold cave.
For big guys like them, dealing with someone on the edge of death like me was as easy as pie.
I braced myself for the hellish torture that was coming, only to suddenly hear screams from the men in front of me.
I sat up, feeling hopeful, only to see that it was Buttercup who had come to rescue me.
It was a stray dog I picked up along the way. I hadn’t really trained it to be a guide dog or anything, but it was smart.
Buttercup stood right in front of me, ready to protect me.
The guy, furious from the bites, threatened to kill it.
I kept telling it to run away, but it just wouldn’t budge. It stayed firmly in front of me, protecting
- me.
At first, all I heard were its “woofs,” but eventually those sounds turned into whimpers.
“Buttercup!”
I spat out blood and felt agony wash over me.
Seeing this, the bodyguards finally panicked and ran away in fear.
I crawled on the ground for what felt like forever until I found Buttercup, who was already dead.
“Don’t worry, I will take you home.”
I pulled up the navigation app on my phone, cradled Buttercup in my arms, and slowly crawled home, step by step.
When I finally got to my front door, I let out a huge sigh of relief, but then blacked out right

When I came to, I was lying on a bed and could smell something delicious cooking in the kitchen.
“Mom?”
It had been ages since I’d felt such a warm family vibe.
“Carol, it’s me and Nic.”
The warmth I just felt was quickly replaced by a chill that hit me right in the gut.
My mouth hung open, and my body went stiff with confusion and helplessness.
“You rushed out so fast that you forgot your invitation. That’s why we came over to bring it to you. So you won’t get turned away on the wedding day.
“Honestly, you don’t look too good. I’ve been swamped with all this wedding stuff, but once things calm down, Nic and I will take you to the hospital for a proper check–up,” Ariana kept going, her voice full of concern like she was my big sister or something.
Nicholas stayed quiet the whole time. After what felt like forever, he finally asked, “Where’s your mom?”
