A tear slid down her cheek as she saw Aiden happily walking toward her, his tiny hands holding a small box.
He looked so proud, so excited. Behind him, Alex followed, slow and steady, his eyes never leaving her.
All eyes in the hall were on her now.
Mia wanted to burst into tears right there. Her heart was racing, her chest tightening with emotions she didn’t even know how to express.
Everything around her felt blurry, the noise, the people, the flashing lights. The only thing she could see clearly was her little boy and the man she never thought she would ever get to love again.
Aiden’s grin widened when he got close to her. He looked so much like Alex in that tiny black suit, with his slicked hair and shiny shoes.
“Hi, Mama,” he said in that innocent, sweet voice that always melts her heart.
Mia let out a shaky laugh, one that sounded half like a sob. The tears kept rolling even though she was smiling. “Hi, baby.”
Aiden tilted his head, his little brows furrowing in concern. “Mama crying?”
“Happy crying, baby,” Mia said softly, her lips trembling as she reached down to smooth his hair.
Alex chuckled from behind him, his voice soft. “Time to give Papa the ring, bud.”
Aiden grinned proudly and stretched his arm up, handing the box to his father like it was the most important mission in the world.
Alex took it carefully, his fingers brushing his son’s tiny ones. Then he lifted his gaze back Mia.
Their eyes met.
It was like time stopped moving. The crowd, the music, the whispers…..none of it existed anymore. It was just
them.
She tried to hold back her tears, tried to stop herself from smiling too much, but she failed. Her face was a mess of emotions….. happiness, disbelief, love, fear, everything all at once.
Alex smiled softly, a deep, emotional chuckle escaping him as he shook his head slightly, as if he still couldn’t believe she was standing there, looking like that, in front of him.
“You’re the best thing that ever happened to me, Mia,” he began, his voice thick, rough with emotion. “You taught me what love is. You taught me how to be a better man. You gave me everything. You gave me him.” He looked down briefly at Aiden, then back at her. “My life means nothing without you. Please… complete my
world.”
He opened the box, revealing a breathtaking diamond ring that sparkled under the hall’s lights. The crowd

gasped in awe.
…
Then Alex slowly went down on one knee. “Will you be my wife Mia?”
The moment shattered whatever control Mia had left.

She covered her face with her hands and cried hard. Her shoulders shook, her heart raced, and the sound that came out of her was somewhere between a laugh and a sob.
The make–up artists who spent hours working on her? Wasted effort. Every bit of mascara and powder was probably running down her face now. But she didn’t care. Not one bit.
When she finally lowered her hands, her eyes met his again, and this time, she saw it. A tear sliding down Alex’s cheek.
Her chest clenched painfully.
Without thinking, Mia reached down and wiped it with her thumb. He caught her wrist gently, holding it there for a moment.
“I love you,” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the applause and gasps filling the room.
Then, with a trembling smile, she said, “Yes.”
That one word was enough to set the whole hall off. The crowd erupted into claps and cheers.
Alex exhaled deeply, as if all the weight in his world had just been lifted. He slipped the ring onto her finger, his hands shaking slightly.
Mia looked down at it, Alex stood up and pulled her straight into a deep, desperate kiss.
The room exploded in applause again.
Aiden squealed with excitement, hugging their legs. Mia pulled away slightly, laughing through her tears, then bent to pick Aiden up, hugging him tight between them.
This is what absolute happiness feels like?
Later that night, Mia was in Alex’s room, taking off her earrings when she heard the door open.
Alex walked in quietly. His face was calm, but his eyes, those eyes told another story.
“Is your brother okay?” Mia asked softly, turning toward him.
Jullian had just been dumped a day after the grand party and the reason? God, it made her sick just thinking about it.
The girl, Rita, had only dated Jullian to get close to Alex.

Who even does that?

Mia had almost gagged when she heard it from Esther earlier. Who gets into a relationship just to get to someone else? How was that supposed to work?
“Who dates someone just to use him to win his brother’s heart?” she muttered under her breath again, shaking her head. “Some people really shouldn’t be walking around freely. They need therapy. Or a locked
room.”
Alex didn’t respond immediately. He just stood there, staring at her.
Something about the way he was looking made her chest tighten.
“Baby?” she said softly, walking closer to him. “What’s wrong?”
He didn’t answer.
Her heart started to race again.
She reached up and cupped his face, her thumbs brushing his jaw. “Alex, talk to me.”
His voice was low when he finally spoke. “Jullian is fine, he really didn’t care about her that much”
“So what is it then?”
“It’s Charles.”
Mia stares at him….Then quietly she asked. “What about him?”
..ough.
Alex’s lips parted, but no words came out. His jaw clenched, his eyes looked so sad…. and that v That one look was enough for Mia to know, but she didn’t rush into conclusion, she waited for him to continue.
“He’s dead”
She froze….
She didn’t even realize she was whispering when she said, “He’s… he’s dead?”
Alex nodded slowly, his eyes falling shut for a moment like he was trying to steady himself.
Mia covered her mouth, a quiet gasp escaping her lips.
Charles.
Dead.
She sat down on the edge of the bed, her heart pounding so loud it hurt. “How?” she whispered.
Alex sat beside her, his elbows on his knees, hands clasped tightly. “It turns out he was really sick and has been for years.”

“Oh my God,” Mia whispered, “Alex…”
He looked up at her, and she saw nothing but sadness in his eyes.

She reached for him immediately, wrapping her arms around his shoulders and pulling him close. He didn’t. hesitate. His arms came around her, holding her tight.
Neither of them spoke.
Charles had been a cruel man. But he was still family to him. Still blood. And no matter how much trouble he caused, no one deserved an ending like that. He died alone.
Mia stroked Alex’s hair gently. “I’m so sorry,” she whispered.
Alex nodded against her shoulder, his voice barely there. ” Maybe I should have really visited immediately when they said he was admitted”
Mia held him tighter. “You couldn’t have known,” she said quietly and it’s true, Charles was a cruel man. They all thought he was lying and scheming something when they heard he was sick.
And that was just a few days ago, it had probably gotten worse before the media got hold of it.
And Alex was even planning to visit him this week and now this happened.
Charles Blackwell is dead.
