Chapter 31
Madison
A few minutes into the drive, John pulled over to the side of the road and stopped at the curb. “I’ll take my leave, sir,” he said, glancing in the rearview mirror.
“Sure,” Alexander replied, his eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my breath catch.
The car door clicked shut behind John, leaving us alone in the confined space. The silence stretched between us, heavy with possibility.
“Something on your mind?” Alexander’s voice was low, intimate.
“Nothing,” I mumbled, though my mind was racing with thoughts of him and Abigail.
“You look cold,” he remarked, a knowing smile on his lips. “Come closer.”
“I’m fine,” I insisted, but a traitorous shiver ran through me.
“Madison.” God, the way he said my name. “I said come closer.”
I hesitated, then scooted over until our thighs pressed together. His arm wrapped around my shoulders, pulling me against his warm chest.
“There,” he breathed against my ear. “Better?”
His cologne wrapped around me, making my head spin. I managed a stiff nod, hyperaware of every point where our bodies touched.
“You’re tense,” he observed, his fingers drawing lazy circles on my shoulder that sent sparks through my entire body. “Why so tense?”
“I wonder why,” I retorted sarcastically before I could stop myself.
“Maybe this will help you relax.” His voice dropped to that dangerous octave that made my insides melt.
Before I could ask what he meant, his lips crashed into mine–hot and insistent. The kiss was nothing like our earlier ones in his office; this was urgent and demanding. His hand tangled in my hair, tugging just hard enough to make me gasp as he deepened the kiss.
My body betrayed my earlier jealousy, responding to his touch like a flower turning toward the sun. My fingers clutched his expensive shirt, probably wrinkling the fabric beyond repair, but I couldn’t care. His tongue explored my mouth with possessive fervor, erasing all thoughts of Abigail and her perfect everything.

When we finally broke apart for air, I was breathless and dazed. He looked at me with a smug grin as if knowing exactly what kind of effect he had on me.
“Feel better?” He whispered huskily.
I couldn’t muster words, so I nodded instead.
“Here.” His voice was smooth as silk as he guided me onto his lap. “Much more comfortable, isn’t it?
My heart raced at our new position. The leather seat creaked softly beneath us as he adjusted me against him.
“Those heels look painful,” he murmured, his fingers trailing along my calf. “How are your legs after that little walk?”
I fought back a scowl. Of course, he’d ask about my legs after making me walk in these torture devices. And now he was playing concerned gentleman?
“They’re fine, Mr. Knight,” I replied, trying for cool detachment but failing as his hands slid up my leg.
“Hmm.” His fingers pressed into my calf muscle, finding a knot I hadn’t even realized was there.” You’re quite tense here.”
A small gasp escaped me as he worked the muscle. His touch was firm but gentle, and he somehow found exactly the right spots.
“I learned massage therapy in Thailand,” he said casually as if that explained everything. His thumbs worked circles into my aching muscles.
“Of course you did,” I muttered, then bit my lip as he hit a particularly sensitive spot.
He chuckled. “You don’t believe me?”
“I’m sure there’s very little you haven’t learned, Mr. Know–It–All.”
His hands paused their ministrations. “What was that?”
Heat crept up my neck. “Nothing.”
“Careful, Ms. Harper.” His voice held a warning as his hands resumed their work. “I might have to demonstrate some of my other skills if you keep being sassy.”
My breath hitched as his fingers traced higher, working the tension from my thighs.
“Better?” he asked, his breath hot against my ear.

“When I told you to leave earlier, you agreed so quickly. I thought you remembered our plans to go to my place tonight.”
“I assumed you were going to that party Abigail mentioned.”
Alexander’s laugh rumbled through his chest. “The party’s on Sunday. In Las Vegas. I got the invitation today. We’re attending together.”
“We?” I squeaked.
“Mhmm. The host is someone I need to investigate. He was at the event where I got drugged.”
My brain struggled to process his words. “You think he was involved?”
“That’s what I intend to find out.”
“Why didn’t you file a case?”
“Think about it. News of someone drugging Alexander Knight’s drink? Shareholders would panic, board members would question my judgment, and the media would have a field day. I prefer to handle this privately.”
His words hung in the air between us. My heart raced, partly from his proximity and partly from the seriousness of what he was saying. The investigation must’ve been going on without my knowledge.
“John might come back,” I whispered, glancing nervously at the tinted windows.
“John left, Madison. We’re completely alone.” His fingers traced up my thigh, making me shiver. ” Just you and me in this car.”
My breath caught as his hand slipped higher. “But, how will we get to your place?”
“I’ll drive.” He smirked. “Unless you’re questioning my ability to operate a vehicle?”
“N–no, Mr. Knight, I just-” My words cut off as his lips found that sensitive spot behind my ear.
“You just what?” His hands gripped my hips. “Worried about my driving skills? I assure you…” He nipped at my earlobe. “I’m excellent at handling things.”
“That’s not what I meant-”
“No?” His fingers dug into my flesh through my skirt. “Then tell me what you meant, Ms. Harper.”
The way he said my name made heat pool in my belly. “I don’t remember.”
“Good.” He captured my lips in a searing kiss that made my toes curl. “Now, shall we move this to

My face flamed at his bold suggestion. His directness still caught me off guard even after everything we’d done. “Front seat,” I squeaked.
“Pity. The backseat has so much potential.”
My cheeks flamed. “Someone will see.”
Alexander laughed. “So, you don’t mind doing it here but are afraid someone might see?”
“I didn’t say that!” My voice came out higher than I intended, and I cringed inwardly.
“Sure sounds like it,” he teased. His hand wandered up my thigh, making it increasingly difficult to think straight. “You just need a little persuasion.”
I glanced nervously out the window, the city lights blurring past us. “But we’re in public!”
“Relax,” he murmured, his lips brushing against my ear. “The windows are tinted. Besides…” His fingers traced a lazy circle on my skin. “There’s something thrilling about getting caught, isn’t there?”
My heart pounded so loudly that I was sure he could hear it. “I’m not like that.”
“You’re full of surprises, Madison Harper.

I tried to steady my breathing, but his touch was doing things to me that made rational thought nearly impossible. “We should really go somewhere private.”
“Where’s the fun in that?”
“You like pushing boundaries,” I said, feigning confidence.
“You have no idea.” He grinned wickedly. “But I’ll humor you this time.”
I watched him gracefully climb into the driver’s seat, his movements fluid despite his size. The leather creaked as I slid into the passenger side, my heart still racing from our backseat encounter.
“Buckle up.” He flashed me that devilish grin. “I like it rough.”
My face burned. “Mr. Knight!”
“What? I meant my driving.” He winked, revving the engine. “Get your mind out of the gutter, Ms. Harper.”
The city blurred past us as he weaved through traffic with practiced ease. His hand occasionally brushed my thigh at red lights, each touch sending electricity through my body.

“You’re awfully quiet.” His voice was low, teasing. “Thinking about last time?”
Images of our previous night in his penthouse flooded my mind – his hands, his mouth, the way he’d made me scream his name. I shifted in my seat.
“I’ll take that blush as a yes.”
