Chapter 54

Brandon settled Shelby down and immediately called Greg to his office.

He asked, “Has the jewelry ordered for my wife arrived?”

Greg replied, “It will arrive in about five days.”

Brandon thought, ‘Five days? There is still a week before Matilda and I get our divorce certificate, so I’ve got enough time.

Brandon added, “Well, check again to see if Matilda and I have any anniversaries within a week.”

In the first year of his marriage to Matilda, he would personally prepare anniversary surprises for her.

Later, when Matilda’s parents passed away, Matilda was unhappy all day long, which also affected his mood.

He never took the anniversary seriously again.

He always asked Greg to pick gifts and send them in his name.

Greg checked his mobile phone memo.

He reported, “Mr. Grimes, the fifth day happens to be your wedding anniversary with Mrs. Grimes.”

Matilda had been so busy these days that she wanted to sleep in the office.

The team needed to write over a million lines of code.

Different circuits would require different calculation methods for writing code.

The underlying framework of the system was complex.

Even with efficient team collaboration, at an average of 500 lines per person per day, it would take half a year to finish over a million lines.

Her hundred-day integration plan included the technical direction of developing automated code tools.

But it was just a direction and couldn’t be achieved in a day or two.

Allen sent Matilda a voice message about Tinsley being arrested.

After listening, Matilda replied with three words. [She deserved it.]

Immediately afterward, she received a message from Brandon.

The reason she didn’t block Brandon on WhatsApp was that she knew that even if she did, Brandon would still find ways to reach her.

Matilda suppressed her discomfort and opened the message.

Brandon: [Today is our wedding anniversary. I’ll be waiting for you at Akas Restaurant at 8 PM. Don’t stand me up.]

They were getting divorced in two days, but he was in the mood to celebrate their anniversary.

Matilda smiled sardonically.

Although she received gifts from Brandon for every anniversary, big or small, each year, she knew clearly that Greg had taken care of everything.

Those gifts were like pre-written program code to her.

They were punctual, expensive, without emotion, and prone to bugs.

For two years, the gifts were duplicates.

The phone vibrated again.

Matilda saw that Allen had replied to the message.

[You said before that there was a good restaurant, Hearty Soups, and wanted to take me there.]

Matilda was a little surprised by Allen’s directness.

She smiled, deleted Brandon’s message, and arranged to meet Allen at 8 p.m.

When Matilda arrived, Allen was waiting for her alone at the door.

“Isn’t Jolene here?” Matilda asked.

Allen said, “She’s still with her grandparents.”

Matilda nodded, suddenly feeling a little awkward being alone with him, which she had never felt before.

The ordering method of Hearty Soups was quite interesting.

The restaurant owner would ask customers a few questions before recommending soups for them.

Ladies first, and Matilda would go first.

The restaurant owner, an elderly lady, put on a smile and asked, “How have you been lately, miss?”

Matilda smiled slightly. “Busy, angry, and tired. And I don’t feel like eating recently.”

She thought to herself, ‘Yeah. I get angry every day. I guess I’m growing nodules.’

The restaurant owner nodded. “I’ll recommend clam chowder to improve your appetite and help you calm down and relax.”

When it came to Allen, the restaurant owner frowned slightly.

Allen and Matilda were both confused.

The restaurant owner said, “Young man, how about you? It seems you’re a bit too restrained.”

Allen’s expression tightened as he cleared his throat lightly. “I’m good.”

He wanted to stand up, but Matilda held him down. “She hasn’t recommended the soup for you yet.”

The restaurant owner squinted at the two of them, nodding and smiling.

“Beef soup is good for him. But more sexual life helps him look more vigorous, you know.”

Matilda wondered, ‘Does this mean Dr. Saunders has been abstaining for too long?

Indeed, Jolene’s mother has been gone for five years, and Dr. Saunders hasn’t dated another girlfriend. No wonder!”

Matilda felt very sympathetic.

She quietly glanced at Allen and saw a few traces of helplessness and embarrassment flashing in his usually gentle and calm

eyes.

Allen suggested, “Let’s eat somewhere else.”

Matilda inexplicably wanted to laugh, but she went along with Allen.

Once outside, Allen said in a low voice, “Total nonsense.”

Matilda burst out laughing and echoed, “Yeah, total nonsense. Let’s not come here again.”

Allen rolled his eyes at her. “Are you still laughing?”

Matilda lightly touched her red lips, trying to hide her smile, but the corners of her eyes curved up.

Allen helplessly rubbed his forehead, letting Matilda laugh..

At Akas Restaurant, Brandon carefully decorated the private room.

He knew Matilda loved minimalist style.

The room was decorated with elegant tulips and had floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides, offering a wide view.

Transparent balloons floated in the air.

There were also three violinists playing.

Brandon touched the wedding ring on his ring finger, picked up the sapphire blue silk gift box, leaned back on the sofa, and waited for Matilda.

He watched the first couple come in and then watched them leave.

But Matilda still hadn’t arrived.

The waiter cautiously reminded him, “Mr. Grimes, we shall have the steak fried soon, or it will affect the taste.”

“Wait a little longer.” Brandon waved the waiter away and tossed the jewelry aside.

It was ten o’clock.

But Matilda still hadn’t arrived.

Brandon lit a cigarette, and in the curling smoke, his eyes showed impatience.

He fumed inwardly, ‘I’ve lowered myself and taken the first step. Even if Matilda was angry, she should have calmed down.

‘Surely she doesn’t expect me to be like those ordinary men, kneeling and apologizing to her, does she?

‘Absolutely impossible! It has taken me a lot of time to decorate the restaurant with great effort!

Chapter 34

It was cleven o’clock.

Couples kissed and left one after another to spend the night together, but Matilda still didn’t come.

Brandon opened a bottle of wine and took large gulps to relieve his anger.

It was twelve o’clock.

The waiter said that the restaurant was closing.

Brandon angrily threw down a wad of money. “I’m booking the night!”

He gritted his teeth. ‘If Matilda dares not to come, don’t even think about getting a divorce!’

Facts had proved that Matilda really dared to do so.

Brandon waited all night, barely holding back his rage, and then he called Matilda.

“I don’t agree to our divorce. It will be useless even if you go to the city hall the day after tomorrow.”

Matilda said calmly, “My social media account has been restored. Go in and take a look. It still says, ‘Whoever doesn’t agree to divorce is an asshole.””

Matilda hung up the phone without hesitation.

But her mood was affected.

She thought, ‘What if Brandon would rather be called an asshole than get a divorce and keep dragging it on?’
