Chapter 86

The three men seemed well-trained and worked together seamlessly.

One held Shelby down, one fetched something, and the other ripped the tape off Shelby’s mouth.

Shelby felt the skin around her lips suddenly tear apart, and the pain was like being rubbed with sandpaper. She couldn’t help but scream.

But the man who took the thing out of his pocket pulled out a handful of chili peppers and rudely stuffed them into her mouth.

It was stuffed full, with no gaps.

Usually, Shelby couldn’t handle spicy food at all. She would pick out the ginger slices when Tully cooked.

Now it felt as if a fireball had detonated in her mouth. Flames shot down her throat, burning all the way to her skull.

The peppers, mixed with saliva, slid into her throat. Instinct made her swallow, and the burning fire traveled down her esophagus into her stomach.

It felt like lava from a volcanic eruption, scorching her from the inside out.

Tears and snot streamed uncontrollably down her face. The delicate beauty was reduced to a mess, her image in ruins.

And it wasn’t over.

As she gagged and retched, trying to spit out the peppers, the three men lifted her up and tossed her into a pile of garbage.

Shelby felt like she was better off dead.

Every part of her body was suffering, and the stinky trash heap took away her last breath.

She choked and tried to climb out.

The man in black walked over, grabbed her hair, and dragged her into the trash.

His attack was brutal and unbridled, as if he had some deep-seated hatred.

Shelby felt a sharp pain in her scalp and groaned in agony, instinctively protecting her head with her hands.

But then the man suddenly exerted force downwards.

He held the back of her head and shoved her whole face into the trash.

The smell was like rotten eggs that had been rotting for months, instantly paralyzing the sense of smell.

The three men laughed maliciously.

“Little beauty, you’d better think twice before telling anyone about tonight.”

“In the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere, a woman and a few men…”

“I’d say no matter how many mouths you’ve got, you’ll never explain it away.”

After saying that, they spat at Shelby and left, speaking fluent Domburgh dialect.

Shelby had been called a bastard when she was a child, but she never felt as worthless as she did now.

She cried, trembled, and vomited. She almost lost half her life before she came out of the garbage heap.

In the August weather, flies were surrounding her, and they couldn’t be driven away.

Suffocation and nausea overwhelmed Shelby.

A blue flash of lightning streaked across the sky, illuminating the entire mountain.

Shelby’s eyes almost popped out.

Veins bulged from her temples down to her neck, distorting her entire face.

She cursed, “Matilda, this isn’t over!”

At the foot of the mountain.

Matilda removed her gloves and mask, revealing her refined oval face.

While it wasn’t raining yet, the three men piled up the gloves and masks and burned them clean with a lighter.

Matilda reached into her leather jacket and handed them a thick stack of cash. “For drinks.”

The three men didn’t hesitate and took the money, stuffing it into their pockets.

One of them asked, “It’s going to rain. Will that woman die on the mountain?”

Matilda said, “No, Brandon’s four bodyguards aren’t pushovers. They’ll find her soon.”

Finally, she looked at the three men. “If you call the police…”

A man replied, “Don’t worry. Someone will take care of it.”

Matilda thanked them again, and they parted ways.

Because of the rain, Matilda didn’t take a plane and bought a business class seat on the high-speed train back to Itera City.

No matter what storms were coming, she needed sleep first.

Matilda opened her eyes again four and a half hours later, when the high-speed train arrived in Itera City.

In the misty rain, Matilda didn’t use an umbrella and hurried along.

After exiting the high-speed rail station, she took a taxi back to Coreline Eternity.

Neil repeatedly verified Matilda’s layout, but he couldn’t find a calculation bug.

Whenever a large number was divided by other numbers hundreds of thousands of times, a single error would occur.

Neil’s eyes were bloodshot, his mood fraying.

If Matilda were here, she would have been able to discover and solve the problem long ago, and she would have been able to open champagne to celebrate.

She gave him her core data and her honor, but he didn’t have the ability to catch it…

Sweat beaded on his forehead and nose. For the first time, the self-proclaimed genius felt the sting of defeat.

Matilda couldn’t enter the core work area anymore and could only stay in the outer office, like Faye and Jemma.

She slowly paced outside with her arms crossed, guessing the problems Neil might be facing.

It wasn’t hard to guess.

By the timeline, he should have completed two functional verifications and their combination by 5 pm today.

But he was ten hours behind schedule. It had to be a small bug in the calculations. In truth, a single line of code could fix it.

Neil probably didn’t find the problem because he was impatient.

Matilda wanted to find a way to tell him to calm down, take it slow.

She saw the black pen on the desk and had the whim to draw a big smiling face on the glass door.

She added the letter M beside it.

Neil saw it when he went to wash his face.

Across three doors, the black smiley face was painted in several layers.

  1. It meant Matilda was back.

Relief flooded him, as if his backbone had returned. His anxiety dissolved. He sat back down in his seat…

Meanwhile, at Crossen Technology.

Brandon had just fallen asleep in the bedroom of the president’s office.

The bodyguard reported bad news to him.

Shelby was missing.

Brandon jumped up from the bed, “What’s going on? Have you called the police?”

The bodyguard faltered. “N-not yet. We thought we should ask for your instructions first.”

“Speak!” Brandon lost his patience.
