Chapter 16

After a brutal year of chemo, Ryder was finally cancer free.

His oncologist said as long as he didn’t go back to his old habits of living on energy drinks and stress, he could make it to eighty.

But apparently he’d developed a martyrdom complex.

Right before discharge, he mentioned having some “minor procedure done.”

Turns out he’d gotten a vasectomy,

He’d also updated his will, leaving his entire fortune to Emma and me.

The last time we spoke, he caught my arm and whispered: “Jess, are we really completely over? Like, zero chance?”

Before I could respond, he waved me off: “Actually, don’t answer that. I’d rather keep wondering.”

Two years later at the office, my entire team was sitting around with their fingers crossed like they were conducting some mass prayer circle.

I glanced up from my iPad: “What’s with the group meditation?”

“The Caldecott Medal announcements are happening any second now.”

“We’re all having anxiety attacks while you’re over there sketching like it’s just another Tuesday.”

My pessimistic editor tried to manage expectations: “It’s only the most prestigious award in children’s literature. The competition is insane. We should just be happy you got nominated.”

Suddenly someone screamed: “It’s live!”

Everyone crowded around the laptop: “What’s happening? Just tell us!”

“Don’t torture us!”

“Holy shit-she won!”

The room exploded.

Before I could even comprehend what was happening, six people were literally lifting me up and spinning me around.

When I was seven, my career goals were pretty modest.

While my classmates dreamed of becoming presidents or movie stars, I just wanted to draw pictures that made kids smile.

I still had mountains to climb, but for the first time, I felt like I was exactly where I belonged.

Around nine PM, a FedEx guy walked in holding this massive arrangement of white roses.

“Jessica Mills? Someone really wanted to make sure you got these tonight.”

Chapter 10

My coworkers immediately started speculating: “White roses are for new beginnings-who’s the mystery romantic?”

A small card fell out when I took the bouquet.

The handwriting was Dylan’s messy scrawl:

My brilliant artist finally found her mountain of honey.]

My pulse went crazy.

I asked the delivery guy: “The person who sent these-is he still here?”

Yeah, said he’d wait outside as long as it takes.”

| bolted through the lobby and onto the sidewalk.

Dylan was leaning against a streetlamp with the biggest grin I’d ever seen.

When I launched myself into his arms, I thought about something Vivian had said to me:

The right love doesn’t just make you happy-it makes you become who you were always meant to be.”

Looks like you found your person, Jess.”
