Chapter 2
The first thing Chloe did upon waking in the hospital was send Liam a text.
[I want a divorce.]
No sooner had she sent it than Liam pushed the door open.
He carried two gift boxes from the brand she’d seen at the mall.
Placing them on the bedside cabinet, he sat directly in the chair next to her bed.
Liam pulled out his phone, presumably seeing her message, but his expression remained
unreadable.
A suffocating silence filled the room, punctuated only by the incessant ding of Chloe’s phone- Liam’s replies.
[You always wear this brand. I picked two dresses I thought would suit you.]
[When you’re discharged, I’ll have the whole brand come to the house. You can buy out the entire
store if you want.]
[Isabella is a doctor. Her hands are essential for her work. That’s… why I was so anxious. Please don’t be angry.]
Chloe hung her head, watching the messages flood her screen. Tears once again blurred her vision.
She couldn’t hold it in any longer.
“You can talk to her. Why not me? We’re face to face, and you still text?”
“Is this deliberate?! A form of silent treatment?!”
Chloe looked up, her face streaked with tears, her voice choked with sobs,
Liam’s face remained an impassive mask. After what felt like an eternity of silence, he looked down and typed again.
[I’m sorry. I have selective mutism.]
He then pulled a document from his inner pocket and handed it to her, indicating she should sign.
It was the deed transfer for their current apartment.

[This is compensation.]
A sharp ringtone cut the air. Liam’s face tightened, and he quickly answered his phone.
His phone had excellent soundproofing; Chloe couldn’t hear the caller.
But his next words were clear.
“I’ll be right there.”
It had to be Isabella. Chloe already knew the answer.
With a grim sense of purpose, Chloe navigated the county court’s digital labyrinth on her phone. In the cold glow of the screen, she became the Petitioner. She uploaded the necessary documents, and when prompted about dispute resolution, she decisively selected ‘Waive Mediation‘. The final step was paying the filing fee with a tap of her finger.
The instant she received the email confirmation–‘Your Filing Has Been Accepted‘ – a weight lifted. It was done. The system now gave Liam thirty days to respond. If he remained silent, the court would grant her everything she asked for by default.
[Deed transfer. 3pm at the title office.]
After a week in the hospital, Chloe received Liam’s text.
In that entire week, there had been no calls, no messages, no visits from Liam.
She was getting used to being alone.
Chloe arrived fashionably late at 3:30 PM, but surprisingly, Liam was already waiting in the lobby.
He hated tardiness, yet now, there wasn’t a trace of impatience on his face.
The moment she arrived, a staff member from the VIP counter came to assist them.
Liam had even thoughtfully prepared a bouquet of flowers and a small velvet box, likely containing jewelry.
A staff member moved to pull out a chair for Chloe, but Liam stopped him, indicating he would do it
himself.

This surprised Chloe. After a moment’s thought, she spoke.
“Really… you don’t have to do this.”
A faint smile even touched Liam’s lips as he gently shook his head.
Seeming to gather all his strength, he managed two strained words.
“It’s fine.”
This rare gentleness and attempt to communicate felt alien.
The paperwork was processed quickly.
[Go home first. I have to work overtime.]
A strange feeling began to churn in Chloe’s gut, growing stronger until it peaked.
She stepped outside and hailed a cab, only to realize she’d left her handbag inside. She had to go back for it.
There, she saw Liam still standing in the hall, now holding an even larger bouquet of red roses than before. Isabella entered through the main doors, and he immediately went to her. They embraced, and Liam affectionately patted her head.
“Right this way, Mr. and Mrs. Walker. We’re so excited to show you the estate–it’s ready for your exclusive viewing.”
“With the recent transfer of your apartment, you now meet the criteria under the purchase restrictions and are eligible to buy another property.”
“Watch your step, Mrs. Walker.”
Isabella rested her head on Liam’s shoulder as they walked into the inner office, both wearing
expressions of pure happiness.
Even though it was July, Chloe had never felt so cold. A cold that made her legs weak, that sent chills down her spine and cold sweat beading on her forehead.
So, she was the one being cut out.
