Chapter 3
“Ms. Thompson, this is the court calling regarding case number BC–2024-001587. The
respondent, Mr. Liam Walker, was duly served but has failed to respond to the petition within the required time. The court has therefore entered a default judgment in your favor on the grounds of
irreconcilable differences.”
“Your divorce is granted. You have thirty days from today’s date to file a motion to vacate this
judgment. If no such motion is filed, the dissolution of your marriage will become final at the end of that period.”
The court clerk’s voice was monotone, likely dealing with countless such simple cases daily.
Chloe took a deep breath and, despite her trembling hands, managed to reply, “Okay.”
She took a taxi home, silently surveyed everything, and then began packing Liam’s things. She didn’t plan to move out; she intended to clear out everything related to Liam.
“Mrs. Walker, there’s a greeting card for you.”
A knock on the door announced a delivery person’s voice. He simply handed her an envelope.
“I’m not Mrs. Walker anymore.”
Chloe took the card and suddenly spoke. The delivery man was taken aback, offering an awkward
smile.
Chloe opened the envelope. Inside was a handwritten card. The penmanship was Liam’s.
As she opened it, Liam’s voice emanated from within.
“Isabella, I love you. You’re the only real thing in my world.”
Before Chloe could react, a hand snatched the card from her grasp.
Chloe stumbled, nearly falling. She looked up to see a grim–faced Liam:
[Don’t touch my things.]
Her phone screen lit up
with his message.
Before she could respond, Liam had already turned and headed downstairs.
“Liam Walker! You’ve gone too far!”

Furious, Chloe stormed down the stairs after him.
“I wasn’t going through your things! How dare you disrespect me like that!”
“I don’t care what’s going on with you and your precious Isabella, but you have no right to insult and humiliate me!”
A screech of tires–the sound of sudden braking–pierced the air.
A searing pain shot through Chloe’s side. Before she could see what happened, a car slammed into her, sending her flying through the air.
THUD.
She hit the ground hard.
Struggling to get up, a face with perfect makeup and oversized sunglasses loomed above her. A red high heel came down, grinding viciously into the palm of her right hand.
“Ahhh——!” A strangled scream tore from Chloe’s throat.
Before her consciousness faded, she saw Liam running up from behind, his earlier cold demeanor replaced by sheer panic. He anxiously took Isabella’s hand, examining it carefully, before letting out a huge sigh of relief.
Until she completely blacked out, he never once glanced in her direction.
“Ms. Thompson, your SVIP privileges at Walker Medical Center have been revoked. I’m afraid
you’ll have to stay in a private room.”
“Apologies, we’ve just confirmed there are no private rooms available either. You may have to wait in the corridor for your surgery.
})
“Also, regarding your right hand… the palm injury is quite severe… it requires immediate surgery, otherwise… you might lose the ability for fine motor skills in the future.”
Hearing this, even in her groggy state, Chloe jolted awake.
“L… Liam Walker… where is he…”
“Get… my phone…”

Chloe frantically tried to sit up, searching for her phone to contact Liam.
[The number you have dialed is currently switched off.]
A broken, whimpering sound escaped her lips.
She hurled her phone against the wall with a violent crash. A sharp, throbbing pain relentlessly ate away at the nerves in her right hand.
“Ms. Thompson, we found Mr. Walker. He… he brought a Dr. Isabella Rossi to the psychological counseling room. He said Dr. Rossi was shaken up by the incident and gave strict orders that no one should disturb them…”
Chloe covered her eyes with her left hand. Blood and tears mingled, soaking her sleeve.
“I hate you… I hate you…”
“I hate you so much, Liam Walker!”
