Chapter 6
Chloe didn’t see Liam in the days that followed.
But before leaving, she had to return to the hospital one last time to have her bandages changed.
The hospital corridor now featured Isabella’s updated profile, prominently displayed among the experts on the first floor.
Chloe glanced at it, but her eyes widened in shock when she saw the listed published paper.
It was her own undergraduate thesis!
She checked the name and date repeatedly. Both were from around the same time as hers.
“Hello, Ms. Thompson.”
A woman’s voice pulled Chloe back to reality. She turned to see Isabella.
“Care to chat?”
The other woman raised an eyebrow, tilting her head towards a nearby lounge area.
Chloe observed Isabella. Everything about her was impeccable–the crisply ironed white coat, the meticulously styled cascading curls.
Isabella smiled and began.
“The day the court called, it wasn’t Liam who answered. It was me.”
She batted her eyelashes, feigning innocence.
“I didn’t know that staying silent meant agreeing to the divorce. You don’t blame me, do you, Ms. Thompson?”
Chloe was silent for a few breaths, then shook her head.
“No. I’m the one who wanted the divorce. Letting go is better for me.”
Isabella seemed uninterested in Chloe’s response, immediately continuing.
“And, about the car accident, it really was an accident. I apologized to Liam, and he promised nothing would happen to me. I suppose… you won’t make a big deal out of it either, Ms.

Thompson?”
Chloe stared intently at her, saying nothing.
She knew deep down that many things were beyond her control right now. Liam protecting Isabella was exactly what she expected.
“You saw it, didn’t you? That thesis.” Isabella’s tone darkened.
“Yes, it’s exactly what you’re thinking. It was… Liam knew I was doing research and actively gave it
to me.”
“These past three years, thank you for taking care of Liam. I was abroad focusing on my research and couldn’t be with him all the time. I only found out later that my sudden departure… caused his
mutism.”
Isabella pretended to be troubled, massaging her temples, but quickly broke into a smile again.
“But look how much better he’s gotten in the short time since I’ve been back!”
Chloe lowered her gaze, unconsciously stirring the coffee a nurse had handed her.
“Are you here to flaunt how much Liam loves you?”
She put down the spoon and threw back the bitter Americano in one gulp.
“There’s no need. I don’t care about Liam’s past, present, or future anymore. I have no interest in a
mute.”
“I hope you enjoy using my leftovers.”
Chloe stopped paying attention to the other woman, stood up, and walked straight to the payment
counter.
“Ms. Thompson!”
Isabella, seemingly dissatisfied with Chloe’s reaction, stood up and made a grab for Chloe’s right
hand.
Chloe winced in pain from the grip and forcefully shook her off.
BANG!
Out of the corner of her eye, Chloe caught a glimpse of a familiar tall figure. It was Liam!

He rushed to help up Isabella, who had just bumped into the railing.
“Liam, it’s nothing, really, I’m not that… fragile. I just lost my balance for a second.”
Chloe paused for a moment, then decided to ignore them and strode forward. But Liam’s hand shot out, slapping her across the face.
The sharp SMACK echoed in the hospital corridor. Nearby patients and staff turned to stare.
Liam himself seemed slightly taken aback.
“You…”
He looked at his own palm, but his expression quickly returned to its usual coldness.
“Apologize!”
Chloe held her stinging, swollen cheek, almost wanting to laugh. Every time Liam truly spoke to her, it was about Isabella.
What did Isabella have that she didn’t? But it didn’t matter anymore.
“Liam! How could you hit Ms. Thompson!”
“It’s alright, Liam. Ms. Thompson doesn’t need to apologize.”
Liam seemed to want to insist, but Isabella smoothly linked her arm through his, speaking softly.
Liam, the ice block, began to thaw instantly.
Once… Chloe had truly believed that if she was considerate enough, Liam would eventually accept
her.
She believed that if she consulted every medical text, Liam’s mutism would surely be cured.
She had fantasized so many times.
But the real Liam had never belonged to her.
