Chapter 14
After recuperating in Thailand for nearly two weeks, Liam chartered a flight back home.
His heart condition had stabilized somewhat, but his selective mutism had worsened again. He couldn’t speak a full, fluid sentence even to Isabella.
He had returned to work the day after regaining consciousness. Isabella, however, continued her routine of shopping, island hopping, and clubbing non–stop, thoroughly enjoying herself. She had
even rented a short–term place elsewhere and seemed somewhat displeased when Liam finalized
the return date.
“Time to go back to work already……”
“Liam… can I quit my job…?” Isabella batted her eyelashes at him on the plane. Liam habitually started to raise his hand to pat her head, but halfway up, he inexplicably changed course and reached for his water glass instead.
[That’s your decision to make.]
“The moment we get back, let’s go file for the marriage license. I’ve got all my paperwork. I need to
make this official.”
Isabella pouted and shook his arm, her voice dripping with sweetness. But her words hit him like a
bucket of ice water, and Liam froze.
The thought struck him out of nowhere: when they married, Chloe had taken his last name. Her name was tied to his on everything from mortgage documents to financial accounts, as his legal
next of kin. Now… he had no idea what she called herself.
Isabella, clearly unhappy with Liam’s silence, frowned and began to ramp up the
passive–aggressive comments.

“Liam, you won’t agree to marry me, and you won’t introduce me to your parents. Are you even serious about me, or are you just stringing me along?”
“Before I went abroad, you said you would marry me. Now I’m back, and you’re free. You’re not
reacting to the idea of marriage now. Is it because you still have feelings for your Chloe? Now that
she’s gone, you’re starting to miss her!?”
This statement inadvertently struck a chord in Liam.
He didn’t even look at Isabella beside him, just stared blankly at the cup he had just drunk from.

Was he reluctant to let her go?
Did he still care about her?
If Chloe were still here, would she have forced him to travel abroad amidst his high–pressure work?
Would she have noticed his discomfort immediately?
Would he have needed a second emergency intervention at the hospital?
Would his mutism have worsened……
A BANG brought Liam back to reality.
He turned to see Isabella standing angrily beside him, a shattered water glass at her feet, water spilled everywhere.
A few flight attendants hesitated, unsure whether to clean it up.
“Liam Walker! Say something! Why won’t you answer me?!”
“Do you love me or not? Tell me!”
Liam looked up. Isabella’s voice was deafening, her face full of rage, her features contorted.
In that instant, he felt the woman before him was a complete stranger–neither playful nor docile. What had gone wrong?
A sharp, crisp slap rang out.
Liam stared in disbelief, his right hand rising to his stinging cheek as he looked at Isabella.
Isabella also seemed panicked, looking at her own hand in shock. The only sound in the cabin was the hum of the air conditioning. Everyone was stunned by the sudden turn of events.
“Liam, I’m sorry, I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to.”
“I was just too anxious. You weren’t responding… I didn’t know why you wouldn’t talk to me.‘
Isabella’s tears began to fall. She tried to throw herself at Liam again but was stopped by his
assistant.

Liam turned away, feeling an immense tightness in his chest. He waved his right hand wearily.

Immediately, several bodyguards stepped forward and escorted the still–crying Isabella to another
cabin.
His heart was pounding, beating uncontrollably fast, his breathing growing more and more rapid.
Liam lost consciousness once more.
