It ended in a massive, unpleasant stalemate.B
ack at his hotel, Liam listened quietly to his father’s call on the phone.
“Running around the world in your condition! I don’t blame you for being sick!”
“But the doctors have made it clear–you cannot travel! Do you have any idea how much is happening at the Group right now? Two days of you being unconscious, and the losses are staggering!”
Liam listened but said nothing. After a long silence, he tapped the phone with his other hand, indicating he understood, and hung up. He leaned back against the hotel headboard, staying motionless for a long time, the word “no” from Chloe looping incessantly in his mind.
Liam still couldn’t quite believe it was real.
“Mr. Walker, your father has booked you a return flight for this afternoon. What are your thoughts…” The assistant knocked, entered cautiously, and informed him. Liam let out a long sigh,
a look of defeat on his face, and waved his hand dismissively.
After returning to Crestwood, Liam periodically checked on Chloe’s situation under the guise of providing funding or sponsorships. He lacked the courage to contact her directly. About half a year
passed this way.
During this time, Isabella still worked at a Walker–affiliated hospital. However, due to the revocation of her research credits, degree, and diploma, her medical license was also investigated. It was discovered she had obtained it through a domestic–foreign joint program that cut corners, lacking proper theoretical and practical training. Consequently, Crestwood First Hospital also revoked her registered practitioner qualifications.
Over those six months, Isabella sought out Liam countless times but never managed to see him once. Finally, desperate, she resorted to various methods of bribery and persuasion with the hospital director to barely keep her job, albeit demoted to an assistant physician.
It was spring of the following year.
“Mr. Walker.” Liam’s assistant rushed into his office, a look of delight on his face.
For so long, Liam had drowned himself in high–intensity work. During this period, he had also tried

various methods to appeal and revoke the already finalized divorce judgment. But all were rejected due to insufficient evidence and the fact that the original judgment had been properly served and had taken effect.
“Ms. Thompson is returning to the country! And it’s said she’s competing for a rising star award in the medical field.” Liam’s attention was captured. He set down his work and looked up, signaling the assistant to continue.
“The competition and subsequent forum are being held at Crestwood First Hospital. That means Ms. Thompson is coming back to Crestwood!”
Liam stood up so quickly he knocked several files off his desk. [When?]Liam still typed the word on his device. He had been undergoing treatment and recuperation for the past six months. The throat tumor had been completely removed, and follow–up scans showed no regrowth. But he still couldn’t speak.
His selective mutism remained unhealed. He had no cure. Perhaps, this time, his cure was Chloe.
“Next week!”
“Should we… discreetly inform the Crestwood Medical Association to ensure Ms. Thompson wins the award?” Liam felt nervous now.
He gripped his phone tightly, his hand even trembling slightly. He typed and deleted messages repeatedly.
[Allocate ten million under the guise of sponsoring the event’s operating costs.]

“Understood, Mr. Walker.” His assistant agreed readily and left to arrange matters.
But Liam’s heartbeat refused to calm down.
