Chapter2
Memories surged like a tide, bitter enough to steal her breath.
Before she married him, she had already known Alexander Stone by reputation.
The media exhausted every superlative–his looks, his brilliance, his ruthless precision. He was the perfect heir who had propelled Stone Group to the top tier of the Forbes list within a year.
His only flaw, they said, was his indifference to women–as if he had been built solely to work.
But at a gala, with just one unguarded glance across the room, his austere composure and that singular, commanding presence unraveled her. From that moment, no one else could take his place in her heart.
So when her family suggested a match, she had agreed almost giddily.
Her best friend had tried to warn her. “Alexander Stone is great, but he’s like a robot. You’ll never be happy with him‘‘.”
Naively, Grace believed that if she were good enough and loved him hard enough, she would melt him someday.
Reality answered fast.
On their wedding night, he performed his role with clinical detachment, then told her flatly, “I’m not interested in romance. I married you for business. As long as you behave, I will fulfill my duties and ensure you enjoy the privileges of Mrs. Stone for life. Beyond that, don‘ t expect more.‘
After the wedding, no matter how often he brushed her aside for work, she endured it.
She told herself he did not love her–but he did not love anyone. That would be enough.
))
Until today. Until she saw for herself how he cradled another woman, how he lowered that proud head for her, how he said the words Grace had ached to hear for three years I love you.
She could not lie to herself anymore.
It wasn’t that he was immune to desire or born cold. It was simply that the person he loved had never been Grace Miller.
Every ounce of her patience and persistence had turned into a cruel joke.
She wiped her tears, turned, and walked out of the station. On the steps she pulled out her phone

and made a call.
“Mr. James, please draft a divorce agreement.”
The next day, Grace carried the freshly printed Divorce Decree to Stone Group Headquarters.
The receptionist looked stricken. “Mrs. Stone, Mr. Stone hasn’t come into the office in quite some
time.‘
A sharp pang pierced her chest.
Hasn’t come in… for a long time?
Alexander Stone–the workaholic who once lived at the office for a month straight to land a single
deal?
She swallowed the ache. “Where is he?”
The receptionist hesitated, then lowered her voice. “Accompanying Miss Hart to Sterling Hall
Auctions.”
An auction…
Grace thought of the rumors–how he spent fortunes just to win a smile.
She drew a slow breath and drove to the venue.
Sterling Hall brimmed with perfume and chatter, a sea of couture and familiar, glittering names.
She spotted him at once in the front row–Alexander, and beside him, a bright, pretty Bella Hart.
The auctioneer presented the final showpiece. A blue diamond necklace rumored to have once
belonged to a British queen. The opening bid itself was astronomical.
Bidding escalated into a frenzy, but each time someone raised a paddle, Alexander casually lifted
his own and outbid them without blinking, lazy in posture, absolute in intent.
In the end, he won it at a price that drew a collective gasp. Every gleam of envy and spite in the room
swung to Bella.
She looped her arms around his neck and kissed his cheek, glowing.

Grace stood a short distance away, numb with a pain that had gone beyond feeling.
All these years of marriage, he had never given her a single gift that meant anything. She had told
herself he simply wasn’t romantic.
The truth was simpler. He had chosen not to be romantic–with her.
She tightened her grip on the divorce papers, inhaled, and walked toward the dazzling pair that
seared her vision.
Alexander saw her first. The faint, lazy curve at his mouth vanished, his face turning to ice as he instinctively shifted to shield Bella behind him.
“What are you doing here?”
That instinctive act of protection was a blade straight to Grace Miller’s heart.
She forced herself to remain steady and held out the folder. “I have a document. I need your
signature.”
Just then, a staff member approached, reminding Alexander Stone to head backstage to finalize the diamond necklace purchase.
“I’m busy right now,” Alexander said coldly. “Whatever it is, we’ll talk later.”
Later? She couldn’t do “later” anymore. Not another second.
“It’s important,” Grace pressed, her voice trembling despite herself. “Alexander… it’s our divorce agreement. If you sign it, then after the one–month waiting period we’ll be finished. Since you already have someone you love, I’ll bow out. I’ll let you go, and you’ll let me go‘‘‘. We can both
find our own happiness without dragging each other down.”
Her words spilled out in one desperate rush. She braced herself for his response.
But Alexander only frowned, turning slightly as though he hadn’t even heard. “What did you just say? I told you I’m busy. Later.”
–
Without another glance, he followed the staff backstage.
Grace drew a deep breath. Always the same. Five years of marriage, and he treated her–her words
as if they were nothing.
She moved to follow, but Bella Hart intercepted her, snatching the papers straight from Grace‘ s

hands.
“So you’ re that arranged wife of his, huh?” Bella’s gaze skimmed her with
open disdain. “Whatever this is, I’ll sign it for him. Alexander gave me his signing authority. He told me I can sign anything on his behalf..”
Grace’s chest clenched tight, every breath a struggle.
His personal authorization? Permission to sign all his documents?
Everyone knew Alexander Stone was the epitome of caution. He insisted on reading and signing every important file himself. And yet-
As if to prove it, Bella pulled a delicate custom stamp from her purse. Without even glancing at the pages, she flipped to the final sheet and pressed it down with a soft thud.
