Chapter4
Grace lifted her head and saw Alexander Stone sitting at the bedside, carefully tipping a glass of
water to Bella Hart’s lips.
Bella looked perfectly fine–only a little shaken, with some superficial scrapes. Nothing
life–threatening.
Alexander’s gaze slid past Grace‘ s bloodied, battered figure without a ripple of emotion. His eyes
were ice, his tone colder still.
“Bella’s craving that sweet cake you make so well. Head to the hospital kitchen and fix some‘.”
Grace could hardly believe her ears.
She was drenched in blood, torn with pain, dragged straight from an operating table where surgeons had been ready to save her life–just so he could order her to bake dessert? All because
Bella craved it?
Years of bottled humiliation, grief, and despair finally burst.
She forced herself upright, every breath a knife, and her voice tore out hoarse and broken, carrying
all the anguish in her chest.
“Alexander Stone! You’ve gone too far. When I was trampled half to death at the auction, where
were you? With her. Always with her! Now I’m lying here, gravely injured, needing surgery, and you drag me out because she wants cake? What am I to you? I‘ m your lawful wife–five years married. Do I mean so little to you that you can trample me this way?”
Her cries cracked into sobs, blood streaking with tears down her face–wretched, broken, but
burning with fury.
Alexander’s expression didn’t flicker. Not even a twitch of his eyes.
Instead, Bella whined softly against his chest, covering her ears. “Alexander, she’s so loud… she’s giving me a headache.”
At once he drew Bella tighter against him, shielding her ears, voice dropping to a gentle murmur. “There, don‘ t be afraid.”
Then his gaze snapped to Grace, sharp and glacial. “So after all that, what you mean is–you refuse?”

Grace’s eyes dimmed into ash.
He lost the last of his patience. His voice dropped to a cutting chill. “Then lock her in the freezer. She can come out when she’s ready to do it.”
The guards seized her immediately. Her pleas, her struggles meant nothing. They dragged her across the ward and into the hospital‘ s refrigerated drug storage.
The heavy door slammed shut.
Subzero cold wrapped around her instantly, piercing every wound like a thousand frozen needles. Her blood felt as though it were turning to ice.
The bleeding inside her abdomen worsened. She could feel her life leaking away, second by second.
Darkness and cold devoured her.
When she thought she would simply die there, instinct clawed against despair.
With the last shreds of strength, she crawled to the iron door and pounded weakly, her voice raw and broken.
“I… I’ll do it… I‘ ll make it… Let me out… ))
The freezer door swung open.
She collapsed like a rag doll, dragged into the hospital kitchen and dumped on the floor.
Shaking from pain and cold, she leaned on sheer willpower. Somehow, she managed to prepare the
osmanthus cake Bella had asked for.
When she finally staggered back into the ward and set the plate down, Alexander glanced at it once, then waved his hand. “Send her for surgery.”
They wheeled her back into the operating room. As the anesthetic slid into her veins, her consciousness slipped away.
A single tear traced down her cheek.
Alexander Stone… from this moment on, we are strangers. I will never love you again.
