Chapter10
Alexander Stone’s drowsiness vanished in an instant. He shot upright.
Divorced? Citywide ads?
He stabbed the intercom. His voice could have frozen glass. “Get me the heads of every major MegaLED operator in Northbridge–now. In three minutes I want to know who authorized those broadcasts.”
Before he could issue another order, the SmartWall Panel embedded in the bedroom lit up on its own. The morning news was already running–and along the bottom, the Citywide Public Notice Loop scrolled the message in stark type.
Official Notice. The marriage of Mr. Alexander Stone and Ms. Grace Miller was formally dissolved today. Effective immediately, each is free to marry as they please. Ms. Miller is now single–suitors welcome.
Every word landed like a slap across his face.
Rage blasted through him. His expression went black; the phone creaked in his grip as if it might shatter.
How dare she?
Who gave her the nerve to humiliate me in public?
Divorce? Without my signature? Impossible.
“Find out–now–how she got a Divorce Decree,” he snarled at his chief secretary, who had rushed to the door. A vein stood out at his the County Clerk’s Office thinks they can break
mple. “Who a
the rules?”
The secretary flinched at the force of his bowed, and hurried out to investigate.
er,
Alexander yanked at the collar of his robe, a restless heat crawling beneath his skin. Beneath the fury was something smaller and sharper–an edge of unease he didn’t recognize. It felt like something was slipping beyond his control.
The report came back quickly.
“Mr. Stone…” The secretary’s voice shook. “We‘ ve… confirmed it. The divorce was processed legally.”

“Legally?” Alexander wheeled around, eyes razor–sharp. “I didn’t sign. How is that legal?”
Cold sweat beaded on the man’s brow. “The file bears your personal seal, sir. Procedurally… it’s
compliant.‘
Personal seal?
Alexander’s pupils constricted. Memory slammed into him. The private seal he never let out of his sight–weeks ago, Bella Hart had cooed that it looked pretty, begged him for one “just like it.” He had indulged her, had a twin made with equal legal force, and even said something reckless like, If you like it, use it.
Don’t tell me…
At that moment, Bella padded out of the bedroom in a silk slip, rubbing sleep from her eyes before
cozying into his arms. “Alexander, why‘ s it so noisy… I wasn’t finished sleeping.”
He tamped his fury down and eased her back a step, unlocking his phone to display the scrolling announcement. His voice was low, tight. “Bella. Did you use this seal?”
She blinked at the screen, stunned–then a flicker of guilt crossed her gaze before dissolving into
wounded tears. “I… I didn’t know it was a divorce agreement. That day outside Sterling Hall, she
shoved a document at me and said it was urgent, that you needed it signed for business. You were so busy–and you promised I could help with paperwork–so I… I stamped it…”
Her voice trembled; tears splashed onto his wrist. “How could I know it was a divorce? Are you mad at me? Do you regret it? Do you think I ruined your marriage? Are you… are you going to leave me?”
She clutched his sleeve, trembling like a frightened fawn.
His anger softened despite himself. The origin of the duplicate seal was his own indulgence; half his fury evaporated at the thought. And when she choked out are you going to leave me, a different tide rose–memories of her “saving him,” of the way she had stayed when he’d been close to
collapse.
The affront re–routed itself neatly–toward Grace.
Of course. Grace Miller must have schemed this, exploiting Bella’s innocence and the chaos that
day to trick her into stamping the papers and pushing the divorce through.
Fine.
He drew a long breath, smoothed away the final snag of unease, and wrapped Bella in his arms.
