Chapteri
The CEO and his female bodyguard had wrestled with poison and desire in the penthouse infinity pool, locked together for days on end.
When they were finally discovered, Ethan Sterling lit a cigarette, satisfaction still written all over
his face.
“Vivian,” his voice was low, hoarse with exhaustion, “Sloane was poisoned by my enemies. She’s
my responsibility. I couldn’t just watch her die.”
“But I swear,” he added, eyes locked on mine, “my heart is yours alone.”
Then, before I could react, he slashed his chest and etched my name into his skin.
The bloody mark seared into my sight, my eyes burning as I pressed my hands to his wound, sobbing uncontrollably.
But when I was in labor–bleeding, convulsing–his phone rang.
“Miss Quinn slit her wrists,” Derek Lane’s voice came through the receiver, urgent. “It may be a
double tragedy–mother and child.”
The man who never flinched under gunfire suddenly lost all composure. He spun on his heel and
bolted from the operating room.
I lay on the cold table, summoning every last ounce of strength to scream.
“Ethan Sterling, if you walk out that door, we’re done for good!”
The door slammed shut, the last thing I heard his fading voice whisper–wait for me.
Ethan never looked back. All that lingered was the outline of his retreating figure..
I squeezed my eyes shut. The doctors‘ frantic voices crashed over me.
“The baby’s in breech position–we need to perform a C–section!”
“Mrs. Sterling, do you have any other family members who can sign the consent form?”
My mind went blank. The nurse had to call my name several times before I finally answered.
With trembling fingers, I forced myself to take the pen.

“I’ll sign.”
Cool anesthesia flooded my veins. Darkness swallowed me whole.
I woke to the sound of a baby crying.
A young nurse–Kelly, her blonde hair tucked neatly under her cap–was rocking a tiny bundle. She
noticed my eyes flutter open and placed the child gently in my arms.
I fumbled for my phone. On the screen were only a few unread messages from Ethan.
“Sloane isn’t doing well. I‘ m worried she won’t make it.”
“Once she and the baby are safe, I’ll come back to see you and our child.”
“Love you, sweetheart.”
Despair hollowed me out inside.
Just last night, I had stumbled across a prenatal report saved on his phone. When I confronted him,
his face twisted with torment.
“I admit it—I can’t bear to lose the baby. I feel nothing for her, but the child is innocent.” His voice
broke. “Vivian, don‘ t force me to choose… please.‘
The grief had crushed me to the floor. The fury, the heartbreak–they tore through me until the
baby inside me kicked in protest.
And still, Ethan had been calm. He had assembled the best obstetric team in Northbridge, ordering them to treat my delivery like a battle they couldn’t lose.
But when life and death hovered over me and our child, he had abandoned us without hesitation.
Now the infant in my arms stirred restlessly. Only then did I realize my tears had been falling, one
by one, onto his tiny face.
I wiped them away in a panic, afraid of frightening him.
The door creaked open.
“Vivian… is it a boy or a girl?”
I lifted my gaze to meet Ethan’s–eyes full of guilt, yet laced with anticipation.

Sloane trailed behind him, her bandaged wrist resting protectively on her barely swollen belly. She shrank under my cold stare, clutching at Ethan’s sleeve like a frightened child.
Ethan shifted forward, blocking my view of her. His tone was gentle, almost coaxing.
“The baby looks so much like you.”
He reached out to take the child, but I turned away, clutching our son protectively.
Pain flared in my abdomen as I steadied my voice.
“Ethan Sterling, let’s end this. We‘ re done.”
The room went cold..
Ethan’s jaw tightened, his chest heaving as he fought down his temper.
“Vivian, don’t be foolish. After ten years together, and now a child. How could you be so cruel as to deny him a father’?”
I gave a bitter laugh.
The moment he walked out and left me bleeding on that operating table, I lost my husband. My child lost his father.
Perhaps the boy felt it too–because just then, he burst into helpless, heart–rending cries.
