Not far away, a boy half my height slipped his small hand into hers. He turned back to me with an obedient smile.
“Mom, don’t worry. I’ll take good care of my sister. We both love you.”
“No! Don’t leave me!”
The
cry tore from my throat, raw and broken. I finally heard the sound of my own despair.
“Mrs. Sterling, you‘ re awake.”
Nurse Kelly was adjusting my IV.
“My baby–where’s my baby?!”
I clutched her wrist, my voice hoarse, unrecognizable.
“I’m so sorry,” she whispered. “We did everything we could…”
Her eyes glistened. “The baby didn’t make it.”
The dream I’d just seen–two children walking away–suddenly sharpened into reality. Pain became real, clawing through my chest.
“Vivian.”
Ethan Sterling stepped inside, eyes bloodshot, his stride heavy.
“The baby fell into the water during the chaos. By the time they pulled her out, she wasn’t breathing.”
He gripped my hands tightly.
“You just came out of surgery. Don’t get too upset.”
Only then did I notice the searing, empty pain in my abdomen.
His gaze darkened, a flicker of grief passing through.
“The bullet ravaged your uterus. You were hemorrhaging. They… they had no choice but to remove it.”
The pain was so consuming that I suddenly laughed. A jagged, hollow sound.

“Ethan Sterling–are you satisfied now??
“Mr. Sterling…”
A fragile voice drifted in.
Sloane Quinn, one hand on her stomach, shuffled through the doorway.
“Mrs. Sterling, are you okay?” she asked timidly. When my eyes locked on hers, she flinched.
“You shouldn’t be out of bed,” Ethan chided softly, rushing to steady her. “You‘ re still carrying a
child. I already lost one–I can’t lose you both.”
Crash!
My phone arced through the air and slammed against the wall.
“Get out! Both of you–get out!”
My scream scraped my throat raw.
Sloane trembled, whimpering as she buried herself in Ethan’s arms.
He wrapped her protectively, then turned to me with a look of disgust.
“It wasn’t her fault. Stop taking it out on her. Must you always be so cruel?”
His lip curled, and without another glance, he left with her in his arms.

I had no idea how many tears I shed before I dragged my shattered body to the hospital morgue. That was where I saw my child for the last time–her tiny form locked forever in a cold, unfeeling
box.
When I left with the porcelain urn, a car slammed into me.
I shielded the urn with my body, refusing to let go.
But then–pain. A stiletto heel ground down hard on my hand.
The ache of my body was nothing compared to the numb agony in my heart. I lifted my gaze-
straight into Sloane’s smile, slick with triumph she barely bothered to hide.
“Mrs. Sterling, well, Miss Hart, I have good news. Ethan made it official. I’m Mrs. Sterling‘.”
She raised her hand to show off the dazzling diamond on her finger.

My face didn’t move. No reaction.
Her expression soured. She lashed out with her foot, kicking the urn from my arms.
With a sickening crash, the porcelain shattered. Ash and fragments of bone spilled across the
pavement.
Something inside me split apart. My heart cracked with it.
Her sharp laughter rang in my ears, echoing until it grew distant, drowned beneath a soft, childlike
voice from
my dreams.
I fell forward, trying desperately to gather what was left of my baby–but passing cars rolled over the ashes, grinding them finer.
Sloane covered her mouth theatrically.
“Oh my, Vivian, is this how you behave? Crawling on the ground like an animal? Even if you’ve lost your title, you should have some dignity‘.”
Slowly, I raised
my head. My eyes locked on hers, steady and cold.
“You’ll pay with your
life.”
A Maybach screeched to a halt nearby. Its door opened, and Ethan stepped out—just in time to see
my gaze.
Panic seized him instantly. He knew that look.
It was the same look I’d worn years ago, when I followed him through rainstorms of bullets and
fire.
“Vivian–don’t do it!”
He lunged forward, hand outstretched to catch me.
But it was too late.
I slammed into Sloane, dragging her down with me. We rolled together toward the rush of oncoming traffic.
“You’ll pay
for my child–with your life.”
