Lyman’s words cut like a blade. Being mocked by their sworn enemy made Corey flush with shame. Mike looked even worse.
“Her? A victim? Don’t make me laugh. We’ll be lucky if she doesn’t mess Taylor up. Now, you expect me to believe she’s being bullied?” Mike sneered.
Jesse had long since grown used to their disbelief. They always dumped the blame on her. She was too drained to argue anymore.
Her eyes lifted to meet Lyman’s. His dark gaze locked on her, steady and deep.
In that gaze, she saw a promise. He was on her side.
A trace of warmth broke through the ice around her heart. She drew a steady breath and spoke. “Mr. Mike Spencer, you know how much Taylor obsesses over her grades. If she misses even one class, she cries to you like it’s the end of the world.
“My grades are poor only because I skipped my own classes again and again to cover for her.”
Sometimes, she even skipped her own exams so she could sit for Taylor instead.
“That’s still on you. If you had taken the same classes as Taylor, none of this would have happened,” Mike snapped.
Jesse blinked at him, then turned toward Lyman. It wasn’t that she refused to explain the situation. She just knew that there were none so blind as those who would not see. No matter what she said, she would always be wrong in their eyes.
She didn’t need to explain anything. Instead, she needed to humiliate them with the truth.
“I’m not here to prove anything. Still, if you’re so insistent, then why don’t we make a bet?” Jesse calmly said.
Mike burst out laughing. “You don’t mean to compare test scores with Taylor, do you? That would be way too easy for you. She’s training for the competition, and she just got better from being sick.
“Thanks to you, she lost any points she would’ve gained from class participation. Her grades won’t look good anyway, so of course, you’d do this now.”
“You think I dragged her down. However, I’ve left already. From now on, whether her grades rise or fall has nothing to do with me. Also, I’m not betting on her scores. You’d only make excuses for her.

“Here’s the bet. I stay out of her classes, and she stays out of mine. Then, we’ll see if my grades. go up.”
Her lips curled with confidence as her voice rang with certainty.
Mike and Corey both froze.
They remembered Jesse’s grades had once been outstanding. She ranked in the top ten in the whole state when she got into Houston University. Houston wasn’t even her best offer. She chose it only because they didn’t want her going far from home.
“What’s wrong? Afraid?” Lyman tilted his chin. His dark eyes glinted with amusement. A mocking smile tugged at his lips. “Scared to admit her poor grades were all Taylor’s fault?”
“Lyman, stop stirring things up,” Corey growled.
“Stirring things up?” Lyman gave a lazy laugh. With long fingers, he brushed aside his untidy fringe. Confidence poured off him. “Why would I need to stir anything when it comes to my sister and you lot?”
Mike’s fists tightened. He was sick of Lyman’s smug face. “Fine. I’ll take that bet,” he snapped, the words slipping out before he could stop them.
Corey’s heart sank. It was too late.
“Mike, are you serious right now?” he muttered with a grim face.
“What’s there to fear? Her grades are trash. There’s no way she can improve in a short time,” Mike scoffed.
Jesse smiled. “Then, it’s set. If I score eighty or above on every exam, I win.”
“Eighty? That’s all? Taylor usually scores at least ninety–five.” Mike coldly laughed, sneering. “All that bragging, and you’re only aiming for eighty?”
“Use your head,” Lyman lazily drawled. “Your precious Taylor cost my sister all her class participation points.”
“What are you talking about?” Mike frowned, confused.
Corey stepped in, his face tight. “Mike, class participation counts for twenty points. She lost them all. Even if she gets perfect marks on exams, she’ll only reach eighty.”
“You…” Mike’s eyes bulged.
Jesse scoring full marks? That was impossible.

Even Corey faltered. He sank into silence, eyes narrowing. Had they judged Jesse wrong all along? She had been brilliant once.
When had their outstanding sister turned into a failure?
Mike’s gaze shifted to Jesse’s confident smile. His doubt flickered.
Jesse softly chuckled. “Mr. Mike Spencer, don’t tell me you’re backing out already?”
“As if!” Mike ground his teeth. “If you’re so tough, then score full marks and prove it.”
“Deal. Also, if I win-”
Mike cut her off. “If you win, I’ll let you return to the Spencer Residence.”
He assumed that was all she wanted.
Lyman’s eyes flashed with scorn. His lips curved in a cold smile.
“Dream on.”
He slung an arm over Jesse’s shoulders. His tall frame set her in sharp contrast. He looked wild and untamed, yet carried a natural nobility.
“You lose and still think you get to drag my sister back to your house? Mike, you’ve got some nerve.” Lyman raised a brow. His eyes glinted with mischief. “Jesse’s going to win anyway. Still, she isn’t your bargaining chip.
“As for the wager…” He lowered his gaze to Jesse. His handsome face eased, and a gentle smile touched his lips. “Jesse, you set the terms. I’ll back you all the way.”
Jesse’s eyes lit up. “Then, I want a public apology. They will admit my grades suffered because of Taylor.”
“That’s too easy,” Lyman commented with a chuckle. He tugged his collar loose, revealing his sharp jaw.
His tone was careless, his eyes half–lidded. “Add in five million. Jesse can use it as pocket money.”
He said it like the sum was worth nothing.
Mike’s expression darkened. His fists clenched. “Fine. I’ll take that bet.”
“Mike!” Corey tried to stop him, but it was too late. He pressed a hand to his temple.
Mike was far too reckless.

“However, when you lose, I don’t want your money. Kneel and apologize to Taylor in public. Also, you’ll rejoin my team,” Mike shot back.
Inside, he smirked. Once Jesse was back, he would never give her a real spot. He would grind her down with errands until her fire burned out.
“Fine, but you’ll also have to apologize to my brother. You’ve been nothing but rude to him,” Jesse firmly said.
Lyman had stood up for her and put his word on the line. She could not let him take the blow for nothing.
His lips curved into a lazy smile. “Jesse, you’re already standing up for me?”
A blush rose to Jesse’s ears. She lowered her gaze and fiddled with her fingertips.
Mike’s face turned stormy.
Once, Jesse had followed them around, calling them her brothers. Now, she called Lyman, their sworn enemy, her brother with ease.
Had she sided with him long ago? Was that why she stormed out of the house over something as small as an apology?
