Chapter 4
Pain yanked me awake.
Shards had worked into my palm.
My fingers shook with every sting.
Cole stood right beside me and held out his hands.
This time, I didn’t reach for him.
Something odd flickered across his face, but he still said, “If you’d admitted you were wrong earlier, you wouldn’t have had to suffer.”
After the IV antibiotics drip was done, Cole took me home.
“I want the housekeeper to help me put my room back,” I told him.
He nodded.
I also called the moving company owner and had everything sorted and boxed.
When I stepped out, Mia Greene was there, too.
Cole glanced at me.
“If you know you were wrong, come apologize to Mia.”
Her hand was swaddled in bandages. She looked at Cole, half–chiding, said, “It was an accident. Don’t bully her.”
Cole’s face stayed cold, and he said, “She went after you first.”
This time I didn’t bend.
“If I don’t apologize, you’ll lock me up again…
force me to behave?”
The cuts in my palm throbbed.
“If you admit fault, I’ll let you keep living at the Lawsons,” he said.

Like leaving the Lawsons‘ house would kill me.
I stared at my toes, drew a breath.
“I’m sorry.”
Sorry for bothering you all these years.
Tears rolled as soon as I said it.
Cole reached to ruffle my hair; I slipped away without a word.
His hand stopped in the air.
“The next few days, we’re going out of town. Stay home and behave,” he said.
“Okay.”
I sat in a chair and heard Cole take a call.
The balcony door was ajar, so I caught every word.
“We’re headed to that upstate spa resort. Your little idiot coming?”
“No. Just Mia…”
“Right. That idiot only shows up at the worst times and embarrasses you.”
Cole didn’t deny it.
So I was embarrassing.
That’s why I wasn’t invited.
As he was leaving, I wanted to tell him that three days from now is Dad’s death anniversary, to please remember.
Mia stepped in front of him.
He drew her behind him again, wary, said, “What are you trying to do now?”
I opened my mouth. “In three days-”
Cole cut in, cool as ice, said, “I’ll be back in three days.”
