Chapter 21: Probably a Considerate Husband
This was Lily’s first time observing him so closely.
The wind gently blew outside the window, and the man stood partially in the sunlight, with the rays slanting across his face.
His deep black eyes were fixed on Lily, and although his gaze was calm, it conveyed an unwavering sense of determination.
Lily was momentarily stunned, inexplicably feeling that these eyes were mesmerizing. When she realized she had been staring at him for too long, she quickly looked away, her cheeks burning.
After steadying her rapidly beating heart, Lily whispered, “But I’m already engaged. Won’t you mind-”
“Didn’t you say you canceled the engagement?”
“Yes, but he’s rich and powerful. I’m worried that you…”
“I’m not worried.”
Not worried? How could that be? After all, that person is Mateo, the heir of the capital’s elite circle.
Lily hesitated before asking, “But what if my ex–fiancé seeks revenge on you?”
Jaxen chuckled lightly, “He won’t. Trust me.”
Lily fell silent for a couple of seconds. She couldn’t quite explain why, but when she saw the firm in his eyes, she inexplicably believed he really wasn’t afraid.
Jaxen’s presence was so powerful that under his influence, Lily felt like there was nothing in the world that couldn’t be handled.
This kind of husband was exactly what she needed.
Lily took a deep breath.
Since she’d decided to start over, there was no room for hesitation.
“Alright, let’s get married,” Lily said.
“Mm,” the man responded softly, nodding. His deep voice carrying a light tone.
“Let’s go to the Marriage License Office.”
“What?”
Lily was momentarily stunned. “Right now?”
Wasn’t this a little too fast…??
“Mm, is there a problem?” Jaxen tilted his head, locking eyes with her.
“I…I didn’t bring my DL card! I might need to go home for it!”
Thinking about her home, Lily lowered her gaze.
She had been gone for two days, yet no one had called to find her.
It was clear that she was dispensable.

However, she has long been accustomed to it and doesn’t care anymore.
“Can we go tomorrow?” she asked.
Jaxen thought for a moment and then nodded. “Alright.”
Just as they were about to leave, Lily’s stomach suddenly growled loudly. She quickly covering her stomach with her hand, a flush of embarrassment coloring her face.
Just then, she heard an amused voice say, “I haven’t had breakfast either. I’m hungry too.”
“How about we grab some breakfast together?”
As he spoke, they reached his car, and Jaxen opened the passenger door, gesturing for Lily to get in.
Jaxen had easily dispelled Lily’s awkwardness. She sighed with relief, “Sure, I’ll follow your lead.”
The car drove through Washington’s busiest streets, finally stopping at an unassuming alleyway.
The restaurant was at the end of the alley. It wasn’t very large, but it only accepted premium members.
Considering that Lily was recovering from an illness, Jaxen recommended several light dishes.
Once all the food was served, Jaxen took Lily’s plate and personally prepared the sauce for her. “My special recipe. Want to try it?”
Just then, the restaurant owner came out from the kitchen.
Upon seeing Jaxen, her eyes widened in surprise.
“Huh? Young man, you’re here again? Didn’t you come earlier this morning?”
Lily looked at him in confusion.
Jaxen cleared his throat. His usually cold face now displayed a hint of subtle awkwardness.
“You must be mistaken.”
The owner became more confused.
Was she mistaken him?
Wasn’t he the first customer in the store at 6 AM this morning, before it was even light outside?
They had even chatted a little. She had asked, “Up so early for work?”
He had replied, “Mm, meeting someone important.”
Had she really confused him with someone else?
Meanwhile, Lily pursed her lips, feeling a ripple of emotion in her heart.
So he had said “I’m starving too” just to make her feel less embarrassment, right?
This was the first time anyone had ever cared about her feelings like that.
Lily fiddled with the skirt on her dress, and suddenly felt that, as a husband, this man didn’t seem too bad.
At that moment, his deep, black eyes met hers, and his voice, as always, was magnetic and pleasant. “After we eat, I’ll go with you to get your DL card?”

Lily paused, gripping her spoon tightly.
“No need. I can go back by myself.”
Thinking of her parents‘ attitude toward her. She didn’t know why, but she didn’t want him to know about her poor relationship with her family.
Jaxen nodded, saying nothing. He respected all of Lily’s decisions.
At that moment, the restaurant’s television suddenly switched to an entertainment news segment.
The volume was loud, and Lily instinctively turned her head to look.
On the screen were Mateo and Eliza, surrounded by reporters–outside a hotel room.
Eliza was covering her face, hiding behind Mateo, while cameras and flashes swarmed around them. At one point, the camera even zoomed in the messy bed behind them, hinting at their intimate relationship.
Noticing the word “LIVE” in the top right corner of the screen, Lily froze.
They were still stuck in the hotel?
Jaxen glanced at the television screen in the direction of Lily’s gaze.
He then stood up and turned it off.
Lily looked at him in confusion. Jaxen tilted his head slightly and shook his phone in his palm. “It’s too noisy, it’s distracting me.”
“Go ahead and eat. Don’t wait for me.”
By the time he came back from his call, Lily was already waiting behind him.
Lily knew he wasn’t really hungry and had only meant to keep her company. Seeing how busy he was, she didn’t want to take up too much of his time.
“I’m full now. If you have work to do, go ahead. I’ll go home and get my things.”
“Are you sure you don’t want me to go with you to get the DL card??”
C
He knew her situation with her family wasn’t great, but if he went with her, things might be different.
Lily shook her head decisively, “No need.”
Jaxen didn’t insist. “Alright. After you get the DL card, come to my place.”
Lily nodded and noted down the address he mentioned. When she looked it up on her phone, she found it was in a high–end neighborhood in the city
center.
She had thought he was just an ordinary small business owner, but she hadn’t expected he could afford to live in such a luxurious place?
After he drove off, Lily felt a bit dazed.
Oh no. She had forgotten to ask his name again.
