Chapter 28: Are You Following Me

Chapter 28: Are You Following Me

After returning home and finishing dinner, Jaxen mysteriously led Lily out to the balcony

Their apartment was on the top floor, offering a clear, expansive view, with flowers and plants filling the space like an outdoor garden

As Lily stepped outside, fireworks exploded above her head

The sky lit up instantly, as bright as daylight

She instinctively looked up, and the fireworks bloomed in the sky, sparkling in front of her eyes, creating a remarkably romantic atmosphere

What a coincidenceDid he prepare this

In the next moment, Jaxen suddenly embraced Lily’s slim waist from behind

She was so thin, he could hold her easily in a single motion

Her tiny frame probably wouldn’t be able to handle much more

His warm breath hit her from behind, and she froze, feeling a shiver run through her body. Her heartbeat quickened

His low, husky voice resonated in her ear, the scent of male cologne mixed with the subtle fragrance of the flowers on the balcony

Lily felt a little tipsy. She wasn’t sure if it was because of the small glass of red wine she’d had with dinner or because of the words coming from his lips at that moment

He said, Lily, happy wedding day.”

Lily’s lashes fluttered. Her cheeks flushed, and memories of last night’s kiss unexpectedly flashed in her mind

They had been so close back then, too

Her fingertips curled slightly, and she licked her lips before softly replying, Mr. Gates, you too.”

Her heartbeat grew heavier with each passing second, like the fireworks bursting above her head

Jaxen’s long fingers, with defined knuckles, crossed over her hands from behind, interlocking their fingers

Such an embrace was truly dangerous

Lily could feel his chest rise and fall against her back with every breath

His warm body enveloped her, and his voice, filled with dissatisfaction, spoke against her ear, Mr. Gates?”

Lily turned her head, meeting his eyes. ThenJaxen.”

A smile tugged at the corners of Jaxen’s lips

His Adam’s apple moved as he gently ran his hand across her shoulder, turning her to face him. He then pulled her completely into his arms

I’d prefer to hear you call me honey.”

The words instantly made her cheeks burn with embarrassment. She bit her lip and lowered her head

Seeing her shy demeanor, the smile on Jaxen’s face deepened

Chapter 28: Are You Following Me

Lily’s body was still lightly scented with wine, which seemed to attract his senses. He gently held her neck, tilting her head back to make her look up at

him

Just as he leaned in, preparing to kiss her, his phone rang at the most inopportune moment

He frowned and answered it

Lily let out an involuntary sigh of relief. From his earlier movements, it seemed like he had been about to kiss her

She squeezed her eyes shut, her heart still racing

Jaxen, holding his phone, muttered something about an urgent matter before heading into his study

By the time Lily finished her shower, Jaxen still hadn’t come out

As she lay on the bed, she suddenly remembered the conversation she’d had with Elodie earlier in the afternoon

She took out her phone and called Elodie back

However, to her surprise, a strange man answered the phone

Lily froze. Who is this? Where’s Elodie?”

She recognized the man’s voice as not being Josh’s

There was some background noise, along with faint music playing

Could Elodie be at a bar

The man on the other end confirmed her guess. Are you a friend of this lady? She’s had a little too much to drink. Could you come pick her up?”

Immediately, Lily jumped out of bed, grabbed a coat, and quickly put it on. Please send me the address.”

After hanging up, she opened the bedroom door and walked toward the hallway. As she remembered that Jaxen was still in the study, she hesitated

and turned back

Hearing the noise, Jaxen opened the study door and saw her dressed and ready to leave. His brows furrowed. What’s going on?”

Lily quickly explained, My friend drank too much. I’m going to pick her up.”

Jaxen silently stared at her for a couple of seconds. His dark eyes had a slight chill in them. A man?”

Of course it’s a woman!Lily quickly explained, Her name is Elodie.”

She bit her lip, suddenly realizing that today was their wedding day, and here she was, running off in the middle of the night…

Wasn’t that a little inappropriate

It almost seemed like she was tricking him into marriage…

Lily lowered her head, hesitated for a couple of seconds, and then, with a deep blush, said, Let’s leave the wedding night for next time.”

With that, she turned and ran off without looking back

Even though Lily’s voice had been very quiet when she spoke, Jaxen still heard her

He stood under the light, watching her retreating figure with a faint smile on his lips

Chapter 28: Are You Following Me

From the sound of it, she seemed to be looking forward to it

Lily took a taxi to the bar and found Elodie at the bar counter

It was a quiet bar, not too crowded, with soft music playing in the background

At this point, Elodie had sobered up considerably but still had a dazed look in her eyes. She cupped her face with both hands and stared at Lily with confusion

What are you doing here? Didn’t you get married today?”

Who needs a husband when I have my best friend?Lily grinned and shrugged off her coat

Underneath, she wore a red knitted slip dress. Although she was slender, her figure was still more than enough where it mattered

Her long legs were curled up on a high stool, the slit of her skirt just enough to reveal her fair calf. The short boots covered the scar on her ankle. In this bar, her outfit definitely stood out

Elodie stared at her innocently, What a troublemaker. I must be a villain, ruining your honeymoon.”

Lily ignored her teasing words and focused on her reddened eyes, asking, Did you have another fight with Josh?”

Elodie and Josh had been married for two years, but their marriage had been strained

One year, Elodie had been injured while dancing and had to recover abroad

The next year, Josh went abroad for studies. It was a coincidence that when one was abroad, the other was home, and their marriage had rarely been under the same roof

Elodie shook her head gently. We hardly see each other in a year, how could we fight?”

Before Lily could respond, a sharp voice suddenly interrupted from behind

Lily?”

Lily turned around and locked eyes with Mateo

He was holding a wine glass, his chin slightly raised, his face full of arrogance. How did you track me,down here? Regretting it?”

Too bad, it’s too late.”

Part 1 – The Message That Shattered Everything

Aveline Russell’s peaceful evening ended the moment her phone buzzed.
One unread message changed her life: blurred photos of a hotel room, clothes scattered, a man’s familiar frame.
Her heart froze when she recognized the wrist—Jaxson Thorne, her mate of four years and Alpha of the Thornpeak Pack.
The date on the pictures was crueler still: it was their mating-anniversary night, the day he’d sworn they’d celebrate together.
He’d told her he was away on urgent pack business.
Now she understood the truth—his “urgent mission” had been an affair.

Part 2 – The Weight of Betrayal

For a long moment, Aveline couldn’t breathe.
Every memory—their first bond, his promises, his laugh—now felt like poison.
Her wolf spirit stirred in the back of her mind, restless and angry.
That instinct had always disliked Jaxson; she’d ignored it, blinded by love.
Now her wolf’s growl inside her head said what her heart refused to admit: He was never yours in truth.
Aveline exhaled sharply, tears drying into determination.
If Jaxson could betray her so easily, she would choose herself for the first time.

Part 3 – The Call of No Return

She opened her contacts and dialed a hidden number—the Bloodmoon Research Facility.
When the voice on the other end answered, she spoke calmly:

“I’ve decided to join.”
A stunned silence followed.
The official warned her what that meant: once inside the classified project, she would vanish from every record—no family, no pack, no past.
Her name, her life, her identity would all be erased.
“Are you ready to walk away from Alpha Jaxson?” the voice asked.
Aveline stared at a framed photo of them smiling together and whispered, “Yes. I’m ready.”
It was the first honest answer she’d given in years.

Part 4 – The Wolf Within

After the call, she sat in the dark, feeling her wolf awaken fully.
The beast within her—the same one Jaxson had mocked as too quiet, too gentle—rose with fierce pride.
It wanted revenge, but more than that, it wanted freedom.
For the first time, Aveline listened.
Her wolf’s steady heartbeat echoed through her veins, whispering that she was born for more than heartbreak.
She was still a healer, still a warrior, still a woman capable of rebuilding from ashes.

Part 5 – The Alpha Returns

Headlights flashed outside.
The front door opened, and Jaxson Thorne walked in as though nothing had happened.
He loosened his black tie, tossed his jacket on the hook—carrying the unmistakable scent of another woman’s perfume—and disappeared into the bathroom.
Aveline stood frozen.
Every sound—the running water, the creak of the floor—felt like thunder.
She wasn’t angry anymore; she was empty.
When he finally emerged in his robe, hair damp, muscles glistening, she realized how much power he once held over her.
That power was gone now.

Part 6 – The Perfume of Another

The air between them thickened with the scent of betrayal.
Jaxson smiled faintly, stepping closer.
“What’s with that look?” he asked playfully. “Miss me, babe?”
He wrapped an arm around her waist, his touch as casual as it was possessive.
Once, that warmth would have made her melt.
Now it felt suffocating.
Aveline stepped back.
The move caught him off guard; his brows furrowed.
“Are you upset again? Did someone bother you?”
He said it like a man used to being forgiven before the apology even began.

Part 7 – The Calm Before Goodbye

Aveline took a long, steady breath.
She could have screamed. She could have thrown the phone at him.
Instead, she turned to the drawer and retrieved a small locked box.
“Here,” she said quietly, handing it to him. “A gift.”
Her tone was so controlled that he almost smiled, thinking she’d finally softened.
Inside that box wasn’t jewelry or a token of affection—it was the legal document severing their mate bond.
Her signature glimmered at the bottom in dark ink.
For a heartbeat, she felt the invisible thread between them strain, preparing to snap.

Part 8 – The Wolf’s Decision

He looked puzzled, but she didn’t wait for his reaction.
She spoke evenly, her voice stripped of emotion.
“Four years, Jaxson. I gave you loyalty, trust, and love. You gave me lies.”
He opened his mouth to defend himself, but she raised a hand.
“No more excuses. You don’t have to explain the perfume, the late nights, the missing anniversaries. I already know.”
Her wolf stirred proudly at her strength.
This wasn’t the weak woman who used to beg him to stay.
This was the beginning of something new.

Part 9 – The Rebirth of Aveline

When Jaxson tried to reach for her again, she stepped aside.
His hand grazed the air where she once stood.
“You’ll regret this,” he said flatly, his pride pricked.
Aveline met his gaze without flinching.
“No,” she answered. “For the first time, I won’t.”
Her words cut deeper than any weapon.
Then she walked past him, out into the cold night, her wolf pacing inside her chest like a heartbeat of liberation.
In the distance, the moon hung low and red—an omen of endings, and beginnings.

Part 10 – The Alpha’s Fall, the Luna’s Rise

When Aveline closed the door behind her, Jaxson stood frozen with the open box in his hand.
He finally saw what she’d given him: the rejection papers that dissolved their bond.
The Alpha who thought he could own her had just been abandoned by the one woman who had ever loved him sincerely.
Outside, Aveline didn’t look back.
Tomorrow, she would join the Bloodmoon Research Facility, vanish from every record, and be reborn under a new name.
Her old life would die here tonight.
In its place, something stronger would rise—the woman her wolf had always known she could become.
Betrayed by her mate, freed by her pain, Aveline Russell walked into the dark with her head held high.
For once, the silence didn’t hurt.
It sounded like freedom.
