Chapter 9
My long silence made Liam’s face light up with joy.
He couldn’t help but take two steps forward, stopping only under my father’s glaring stare.
“Sweetheart, what are you thinking?” He patted my hand, signaling me to relax. “If you really like
this pretty boy, just keep him at home. It won’t interfere with finding other men.”
Wait, why did that sound familiar?
I glanced at Liam–seemed like he’d said something similar to Alex before the auction started.
I wondered how it felt when the boomerang hit him.
I unconsciously showed Liam my favorite smile and rejected my father’s suggestion. “Dad, am I the
kind of person who’s fickle? I don’t want to have my cake and eat it too.”
I meant to mock Liam, but unexpectedly this man looked at me with deep affection.
He saw himself as my father’s son–in–law, waving at the staff. “Didn’t you hear what she said? Hurry up and bring me something to eat–I want beef Wellington! Did you hear me! And you people on stage, hurry up and untie Alex! We’re both guests of Quinn!”
Unfortunately, after all his gesturing, no one listened to him.
The punishment from a few days ago was still fresh in everyone’s memory–no one dared make the
same mistake.
Liam said, “Quinn, your family’s servants need proper training. They have no sense at all.”
I began to doubt my judgment–how had I fallen for such a thing, even wanting to spend my life with
him?
Had I studied myself stupid at school?
“Dad,” I turned to look at him, then pointed at Liam, “when you destroyed the Morgan family, did
you forget about this one? Looking at this man makes me sick. You’d better deal with him for me.
Your daughter was blind to like him before, but don’t worry–I’m cured now.”
My father nodded, and with a simple snap of his fingers, the Reed family’s fate was sealed.
Only then did I realize that the auction house here didn’t sell ordinary porcelain and antiques.

Instead, it auctioned dirt and leverage on various families, so these people lived in terror of my father, knowing one wrong move could destroy everything they’d built.
Liam clearly didn’t understand the depths of this place.
He puffed out his chest and sneered, “Quinn and I together would be a strong alliance. My parents haven’t looked down on your family’s roughness–that’s already generous. And you want to destroy my Reed family? Dream on!”
He didn’t notice the looks of pity from everyone present as he continued his tirade, “Mr. Moon, your daughter has been with me for three years. In others‘ eyes, she’s damaged goods. Besides me, who else would want her?”
These days, even if I really had slept with Liam, so what?
Did he really think I couldn’t live without him?
I was about to retort when I saw my father stand up, his face unreadable.
He said, “Boy, it’s been a long time since anyone dared question me. Since you don’t believe me,
how about a bet?”
Π
Liam replied, “A bet? Fine! What do you want to bet on?”
My father pointed at Alex on the auction stage and looked at Liam mockingly. “You just bid one hundred dollars for that woman. Give me three minutes. If you can pull even that hundred dollars from your account, I lose. I’ll give you this entire auction house. How about it?”
