One Night. One Mistake. Ch 10

Chapter 10

Elle’s POV

I stood facing Grace’s interrogating stare when the sound of footsteps drew our attention. Mom emerged from the back room, her tired eyes

widening at the sight of me. Behind her, Megan appeared, her perpetually judgmental gaze immediately locking onto my hospital clothes.

“Elle!” Mom rushed forward, her face lighting up with relief. She pulled me into a gentle hug. “I’ve been so worried. I called your apartment

several times-1 even went there last weekend but no one answered.

As she pulled back, confusion clouded her features. “Why are you wearing hospital clothes? Are you sick? What happened to you?”

Megan snickered, leaning against the doorframe with her arms crossed. “Probably caught something in that fancy part of town she works in. All those werewolves carrying who knows what kind of diseases.”

I took a deep breath, my heart hammering against my ribs. This was the moment I’d been dreading. How exactly do you tell your family that you’re accidentally pregnant with a werewolf Alpha’s child and about to become his mate?

“I need to tell you all something,” I said, my voice steadier than I expected. ‘It’s… complicated.”

Grace huffed impatiently. “Well? Spit it out. Who was that man that brought you here? Another one of your poor choices in men after Jason left

you?”

‘He’s… a colleague. Sort of.” I rubbed my forehead, feeling a headache building. “Look, a lot has happened these past few weeks.”

Mom guided me to sit on our worn couch, her face etched with concern. You can tell us, honey. Whatever it is, we’re family.”

I nodded, gathering my courage. ‘I’m… I’m pregnant.”

The silence that followed was deafening. For a moment, it seemed like everyone had turned to stone. Then all hell broke loose.

“You’re WHAT?’ Grace’s voice cracked like a whip. “After everything we’ve done for you! This is how you repay us? By bringing shame to this family! Is it that Jason boy? Did he leave you with a bun in the oven before running off?”

Mom sat frozen beside me, her face pale with shock, mouth opening and closing but no words coming out. Finally, she whispered, “Oh, Elle.

How… how far along are you? Have you seen a doctor?”

Megan’s reaction was perhaps the most predictable. A mean-spirited smirk spread across her face. ‘Who’s the lucky guy?” she asked with mock curiosity. “Who would even look at Elle? Probably some old, ugly, short, hideous balding man, right? Or maybe one of those desperate human

janitors from your building?” She laughed at her own joke. ‘God, Elle, couldn’t you at least try to find someone with prospects?”

“It’s not like that,” I said, my voice growing smaller under their combined scrutiny.

“Then what is it like?” Grace demanded. “Some one-night stand? A werewolf from work taking advantage of you? Did you really think spreading

your legs for your boss would get you promoted?”

Her words hit closer to home than she could possibly know. I winced, which Grace immediately noticed.

Chapter 10

Oh my God, she hissed. It was a werewolf, wasn’t it? You stupid, stupid girl! Do you have any idea what happens to humans who get mixed up with werewolves? They use you and throw you away!”

“Mom, please,” I turned to Susan, desperate for support. There’s more. I’m… I’m going to go through a marking ceremony. I’m going to be mated to an Alpha.”

If I thought the silence before was bad, this one was apocalyptic. Even Megan’s smug expression faltered.

What did you just say? Grace asked slowly, her voice dangerously quiet.

“The father is Brad Rayne,” I continued, deciding to just get it all out. “I’m carrying his child, and we’re having a marking ceremony soon. Next

week, actually.”

Megan burst into hysterical laughter. “Brad Rayne? THE Brad Rayne? Alpha of Moonshade Bay and CEO of Rayne Group?” She doubled over,

practically wheezing. “That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard! Next you’ll tell us you’re going to be queen of the werewolf kingdom!

Did you hit your head in that hospital?”

“You’re lying,” Grace stated flatly. “No Alpha would choose someone like you. Especially not Brad Rayne.”

Her words stung, even though I knew I shouldn’t care what she thought. The truth was, I’d been asking myself the same question: why me? The answer wasn’t flattering – I was just a genetic anomaly, a human with heterochromatic eyes that happened to make me a true mate.

“Elle, Mom finally spoke, her voice trembling. “Honey, are you sure about this? Sometimes these powerful werewolves… they make promises they don’t intend to keep. There are groups that prey on human girls, promising them a life with wealthy werewolves. If you’re really pregnant,

there are clinics that can-

“I’m not being tricked, I insisted, though I wasn’t entirely convinced of that myself. “This is real. My eyes- I pointed to my heterochromatic eyes, -apparently mark me as his true mate. That’s why I’ve been in the hospital. They’ve been monitoring me and the baby. The Rayne family’s personal doctor has been overseeing everything.”

“True mate?’ Megan snorted. “Those are just old legends. Next you’ll tell us you’re actually a secret princess from a fairy tale. Come on, Elle,

even you can’t be this gullible.”

“You’ve always been a daydreamer, Grace added with a dismissive wave, “but this is beyond ridiculous. Brad Rayne is one of the most powerful

Alphas in the country. He could have any werewolf female he wants. Why would he choose a nobody from the human district?

I stood up, frustration building. “Look, I don’t expect you to believe me, but I need to get back. Alex is waiting.”

r

“You’re not going anywhere, Grace snapped, stepping between me and the door. “Not until you tell us the truth about who got you pregnant and what kind of trouble you’re really in.”

“I AM telling the truth!” My voice rose despite my best efforts. Why would I make something like this up?”

‘Because you’ve always wanted to escape this place, Grace shot back. Always thought you were better than us. Now you’ve gone and gotten yourself pregnant and you’re spinning fairy tales about werewolf Alphas and true mates!”

*Elle, Mom pleaded, her eyes filling with tears, ‘please be honest with us. Are these people forcing you to say these things? Are they threatening you? You know there are cases of human trafficking where they target young women with promises of luxury…”
