Chapter 1
“How have you been?”
“Without you? Never been better.”
That’s the first thing my daughter said to me when I got out of prison.
She’d already filed the paperwork to legally sever our relationship. I signed without a fight.
She’s a successful attorney now.
And me? I’m a convicted killer with months left to live.
She thinks I destroyed her life.
Cut her hair and made her an outcast.
Forced her to give up her dreams and study something she hated.
And killed her father.
What she doesn’t know-
Everything I did, I did to save her.
By the time she understood, it was too late.
Fresh out of prison, my daughter took me straight to court.
She wanted to legally cut ties. I signed without a word.
Outside the courthouse, papers in hand, I couldn’t help myself.
“Jenna… you doing alright?”
She looked at me and smiled. Cold, satisfied.
“Without you? Never been better.”
I nodded. “Good.”
At least there was that.
She handed me a bank card.

Chapter 1
“Two hundred thousand. We’re square now.”
I looked at her–sleek hair, expensive suit, all sharp edges and confidence.
Behind her, my granddaughter stood quiet, holding her mother’s hand.
I pushed the card back. “Keep it. Raising a kid’s expensive.”
Her expression hardened. She threw the card at me.
“Don’t act like you care about my daughter.”
“I’ll give her everything. She’ll never turn out like me.”
“And you’re NOT my mother. You don’t get to be!”
I stood there, then bent down and picked up the card.
Two hundred thousand. Back home, that could’ve bought the whole farm.
On the bus to the station, a talk show played on the overhead screen.
I watched the woman being interviewed–confident, articulate, untouchable.
“She’s incredible. Makes a fortune off one case.”
“My daughter says she’s a partner now. Big deal lawyer. We don’t make in a year what she makes in a month.”
“Takes care of her family too. Whoever raised that girl hit the jackpot.”
I straightened up. Smoothed down my gray hair.
That’s my daughter.
Look at her now.
The train station was packed–workers hauling bags, families splitting off in every direction.
I stood there, lost. Five years inside and the world had moved on without me.
My phone rang. Diane–my old neighbor.
Not blood, but family. She visited me inside when no one else would. Kept me updated on Jenna.
She was crying now.

Chapter 1
“You’re such a fool. You should’ve told her. Why carry this alone?”
“She’s grown. Successful. She’d understand.”
Understand what?
To me, she’s still that stubborn little girl who wouldn’t cry no matter what.
I closed my eyes. “Diane… I’m dying.”
Eight–year sentence. Got out early for good behavior.
And terminal cancer.
“I wasn’t a good mother.”
“She’s a lawyer–respected, successful. Having a convicted killer for a mom doesn’t help that.”
I’m dying anyway.
I won’t wreck her life twice.
