Alex’s gaze fell on the familiar phone. He took it slowly.
He tried her birthday. Failed. Tried their anniversary. Failed. Again and again. Locked out.
They’d never had secrets before.
Why change the password now?
The question, like why she jumped, lodged in his chest, a suffocating agony.
He’d had it all planned.
After Scarlett got the eyes, the debt would be paid.
Then… back to normal. Marry Evelyn. Build a life. Have children.
He’d only imprisoned Scarlett after discovering…
…she was the daughter of his childhood nanny.
His parents lived abroad. That nanny was his surrogate mother.
She’d only left when he grew older.
He hadn’t believed Scarlett at first.
Not until he saw the video call with the old woman… his ‘Aunt Martha.‘ Confirmed.
Knowing her identity… had torn him apart.
Should he tell Evelyn?
Scarlett, ever the ‘understanding‘ one, convinced him not to.
“Evelyn’s so sensitive now. Knowing we’re connected… she’ll misunderstand you.”
It made twisted sense.
He decided: tell Evelyn after the wedding.
So he secretly dropped the lawsuit. Signed the settlement agreement behind Evelyn’s back.
Moved Scarlett into his office as his ‘personal assistant.‘
Each step, he justified:

Chapter 6
Evelyn’s reasonable. She’ll understand.
“Sir? Sir?”
Alex snapped back. His secretary looked anxious.
Alex looked at him, then at Evelyn’s phone. Once again, he made his choice.
He walked towards Scarlett’s room, phone in hand.
Each step fueled a growing dread.
Just outside her door…
…he heard laughter. Cruel, triumphant laughter.
“You played your part perfectly, Martha. The $500K is in your son’s account. Your job’s done. Remember: no matter what Alex asks, I’m your daughter. Got it?“>
Alex’s hand froze mid–air. Trembling.
Scarlett dialed another number, loud and clear:
“So? You all said Alexander Vance was loyal? Devoted?”
“Three months! A few moves, and he forgot Evelyn Grant! Fell at my feet!”
“I fake blindness? He calls her to donate her eyes! Game over! Wire the bet money–billions – NOW!”
Her smugness seeped under the door.
A disbelieving voice replied: “How?! You crippled his fiancée! He shouldn’t touch you! Shouldn’t have bet…”
Scarlett scoffed. Alex heard the click of a lighter, the inhale, the exhale of smoke. Effortless. She wasn’t blind.
Alex’s hand shook violently. Blood filled his mouth.
“Men… think with their dicks,” Scarlett drawled. “Drugged him the first time. Smooth sailing after that. Once you get them
hooked…”
She sat on the bed, legs crossed, radiating victory.
Alex bit down until copper filled his mouth. He pulled his trembling hand back.
Eyes vacant, he reeled down the corridor.
He collided with his secretary. Before the man could speak, Alex rasped: “Cancel it!”
The secretary tried to ask more. But Alex shoved past him, stumbling blindly forward.
