“AHHH!”
I screamed. My mom came running in.
“What’s wrong?”
I pointed, shaking.
“Mom–there’s blood–on the ceiling!”
She froze.
Her expression went blank for a moment before she turned her head toward the kitchen.
My dad lowered his newspaper slowly, staring at the ceiling too.
His face didn’t move–no reaction, no fear. Just empty.
The sound of chopping meat had stopped, but somehow that made it worse.
A heavy silence filled the apartment.
I realized then–it wasn’t just inside.
Outside, fireworks were exploding all across the neighborhood… but I couldn’t hear a single one.
Not. A. Sound.
I ran to the window, heart racing, and tried to open it.
It didn’t budge.
I pulled harder–it was like someone had welded it shut.
Panicking, I turned on the TV. The sound came through just fine.
So… my hearing was okay.
Then why couldn’t I hear anything else?
Minutes–or maybe hours–passed. My parents hadn’t moved an inch.
Finally, I tugged on my mom’s sleeve.

Chapter 2
“Mom… is someone getting killed upstairs? I’m scared.”
She turned her head in one slow, mechanical motion and smiled–too wide, too still.
“The upstairs pipe must’ve burst.”
Her voice was flat, cold.
The kind of tone that doesn’t match a smile.
I swallowed hard. “But… it’s red.”
Her eyes didn’t blink.
“There’s iron in the water.”
“Oh… right,” I said, pretending to believe her.
But the smell–that thick, metallic stench–was everywhere.
That wasn’t rust.
Something was very wrong.
And whatever my parents were hiding…
….it was upstairs.
We lived in 502.
The old couple was in 602.
At least… they used to be.
