Chapter 14

The two of us have defeated anyone who comes to our table. Ivar finally gives up, and Lieza takes his place beside me so he and Yadira can find a dark corner somewhere. The game starts up again, and the two of us start joking around with the others. We’re somewhere around the middle of our second win when the atmosphere changes drastically.
My stomach drops when I look towards the house where the commotion is coming from to see Santiago standing in the doorway, looking like the wrath of hell. He growls when his eyes land on me. I freeze as he storms over to us. I almost jump out of my skin when he grips the end of the table and sends it flying, not caring who he hits.
I push Lieza and the girl next to her away from me when his hand reaches out to wrap around my throat. He pulls me into him hard, slightly cutting off my air supply. I look over his shoulder to see a very smug–looking Poppy following behind
him.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” he demands.
“Alpha-” he roars in Lieza’s face when she tries to say anything. The girls all step away from us. His red eyes come back to
mine.
“It’s a party. I remind him. “What else?”
“You are not allowed to come to shit like this,” he growls, pulling me so close his lips almost brush up against mine.
“You don’t get a say in what I do anymore,” I dig my nails into his wrist. I smell his blood and see that he’s visibly getting angrier. “I’m not afraid of you.”
“Is that right?” he sneers.
“Get your filthy fucking hands off her.” Ivar shouts from somewhere.
Santiago doesn’t look in his direction. He’s nowhere near us.
“You blocked me out of all of my accounts, Soph. What do you think you’re going to accomplish by doing that? You’re angry at me, baby. I get that, but you’re going to look really fucking stupid when you come back after all of this. I need you to come home with me.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you,” I dig my nails deeper. “I can’t believe you brought her here to hurt me like this.”
I swing my foot and hit him between his legs. He doesn’t release me. He growls and forces me to my knees and pins me to the floor. His grip on my throat tightens, completely cutting my air supply. I struggle against him, but it’s not use. He’s a lot bigger than I am and way stronger.
“Sophie!” Lieza tries to help, only for Poppy to shove her out of the way.
“You’re coming home with me,” he roars in my face.
“No, I choke out and scratch at his arm with one hand while I push his face with the other.
He pulls me back up with him, and then suddenly I’m airborne. I try to inhale, and for a second, air fills my lungs, but then I’m surrounded by ice–cold water. I breathe in a mouthful of water. I kick my legs out and reach for the surface, but I can’t bring myself to move. My head and lungs are screaming out desperately, and there’s not a single thing I can do. My vision is starting to blur as the pool lights seem to shine brighter.
An arm wraps around me, and I’m pulled out of the pool. I immediately start choking on the water as I’m turned over onto my stomach. It feels like the water inside of me isn’t coming out fast enough. Like I’ve swallowed all of the pool water. Hook up at Caesar–Santiago’s beta.

“Are you okay, Sophie?” he asks worriedly, rubbing circles on my back as I cough up my soul.

The chlorine is burning up my insides. I look up to see Ivar storming towards us. I look around until I see Santiago lying on the floor not far behind him.
“Get the fuck off her,” he growls.
He takes my hand and helps me up before scooping me up into his arms. Through my blurred vision, I see Poppy kneeling beside him, crying as she tries to wake him up. She cries out for someone to help as if he didn’t deserve what he got.
“Hey,” Ivar says and sets me down in the passenger seat of the car. “Look at me, Soph. Are you wounded?”
“No,” my voice comes out as a hoarse whisper. He reaches for my neck to make sure Santiago didn’t cut me.
“I’m so sorry,” he says, cupping my face.
“I want to go home,” I say, panicking as tears fill my eyes.
“Sophia!” his roar echoes loudly over the music behind us.
“Okay,” he nods and helps me into the car before shutting the door.
“Sophia! Come back here!” Santiago shouts.
The betas are trying to stop him from coming towards us, as Ivar goes around to the driver’s seat. I stare at him as he pushes against his betas to try to get to me. He’s still shouting, but I can’t bring myself to listen as I watch Poppy cupping his face, trying to calm him. He’s not looking at her; his eyes are on me.
My tears betray me. The slide down my face, and I see the moment his rage fades. He stops struggling as I reach up to wipe them away. All I can do is glare at him, feeling the ache of his betrayal in my stomach. The evidence of it burns with every breath I take.
“I hate you,” I say, praying to the moon goddess that he can hear it. “I hate you so fucking much.”
“Sophie!” he shouts as the car turns away. Sophia, wait! Sophie!”
I cover my mouth to cough and look down to see that I’m bleeding. That’s how hard he squeezed. I can’t help it this time. I can’t hold it back, and I start to cry. My insides are burning from the chlorine. I feel lightheaded and like I can’t breathe in enough. The crying isn’t helping.
Ivar doesn’t say a word, but as soon as we arrive, I am surrounded by Lycans. I’m carried out of the car and up to my room. A doctor comes over to me and starts barking orders. He presses on my neck lightly and then flashes his light in my eyes.
“Are you having trouble breathing?” he asks. I nod, unable to say anything. “It’s just a little swelling. The shock of the cold water caused the blood to rush. There’s nothing too serious. Open.”
I open my mouth and stick out my tongue. He flashes the light in my mouth and reaches for something beside him.
“What is that?” I choke out when he retrieves a syringe.
“A mild sedative to help you relax. It makes you drowsy, but you’ll still be able to get out of these wet clothes. There’s also very little wolfsbane in this to help you heal.”
“I’m an omega,” I inform him.
“I am aware, Miss Helvig. Your grandmother prepared me,” he smiles kindly.

His eyes are a strange creamy orange shade. His skin is just as shiny as Ivar’s. Not greasy or anything, just vibrant like his. I’ve never stopped to look at a Lycan too closely. My grandmother always tells me that they don’t like it, but as he injects me, I can’t help it.
“Wow, that works fast,” I say, feeling a warm sensation flood through me, soothing the fire I feel.
“Yeah,” he smiles. “I’ll give you a minute to clean up before I let Ivar in. Get some rest.”
“You’re stunning,” I say and then immediately lean away. “I am so sorry. I didn’t mean it in a weird way. I’ve just never seen a man as pretty–I mean. I’m going to stop talking now.”
“Thank you,” he laughs as he puts his things away.
I am horrified about what just came out of my mouth, and I stand up to go to the closet. The room tilts a little, and I have to hold on to the bedpost until everything stops spinning. I go into my closet and close myself in before I start removing these wet clothes. I’m in bed trying to get warm when Ivar taps on the door and comes in.
“Hey,” he says gently. I wave at him. He smiles and comes over to sit beside me. “How high are you?”
“That joint at the party didn’t even get close,” I admit. He laughs.
“Soph, I am so sorry. I should have known someone would tell him where you were. I let things escalate too far. It’s not going to happen again,” he promises.
“It’s okay. I’m sorry he ruined our night,” I lay my head back on the pillows. “Aside from that, I was having a great time thanks to you.”
