It was late by the time Jake left his brother’s apartment and walked back to the packhouse, his mind full. As much as he had wanted to go find Lyra right after dinner, he’d chosen to give her space, to let her calm down. He could still hear the way her voice had cracked before she
ran.
The names she had called herself… it gutted him. He knew those were the things she’d been called growing up, and James had been right. Jake had never stood up for her. That was something he had to live with. He couldn’t go back and fix it, but he could do whatever it took to make sure she never felt that way again.
He had stupidly hoped she’d be in his room, but it was cold and empty when he got there. Her scent was faint, letting him know she hadn’t come back at all. After mindlinking Callan and Russ to make sure she wasn’t with them or their mates, he knew exactly where she would be.
The one person she would always run to. The one she would always protect.
“Who is it?” Donovan called when Jake knocked.
“Jake.”
“It’s not locked.”
He opened the door to find the room dim, the only light coming from the television. Donovan was propped up against the headboard on the far side of the bed, hands behind his head. Lyra was curled up closer to the door, her back to him, a blanket wrapped around her like a
cocoon.
“Forgive me for not standing to greet you, Alpha,” Donovan said with a smirk.
Jake rolled his eyes. “Is she asleep?”
Donovan glanced over. “She was, but I think she’s starting to wake up.”
Lyra’s voice was muffled by the pillow. “I don’t want to wake up.”
Jake walked over, placing a knee on the mattress to lean toward her. “I came to take you to bed.”
“I am in bed,” she mumbled, not moving.
Jake sighed and shook his head. He leaned down, slipped his arms around her, and scooped her up like she weighed nothing. “Not the right bed.” He kissed her temple as he adjusted her against his chest.

Jake pulled the door shut behind him and headed to the elevator. He half–expected her to argue or squirm her way out of his arms, but instead she wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face into his chest. Her silence said more than words.
In the quiet hum of the elevator, he brushed his fingertips slowly along her spine.
“I wasn’t sure you’d want to come to bed with me,” he said softly against her temple.
She didn’t answer right away. It made his chest ache.
“I didn’t,” she whispered finally, curling tighter against him. “But that doesn’t mean I didn’t miss you.”
He let out a breath and kissed her hair. “You drive me insane.”
“I know.”
The elevator doors opened, and he carried her through the quiet hallway to his room. Inside, he nudged the door shut and lowered her gently onto the bed. But when he went to pull away, her arms stayed looped around his neck.
“You’re not letting go,” he said.
She shook her head.
He smiled and climbed into bed beside her, kicking off his shoes and tugging her against his chest. They lay there for a long time in comfortable silence, her head rising and falling with his breathing. His hand found its way under the edge of her shirt, fingers stroking lazy circles along the small of her back.
“Are you still mad at me?” she whispered just when he thought she’d drifted off.
“No,” he said honestly. “Are you still upset with me?”
“No,” she murmured.
“Did you find the answers you were looking for? With the witch?”
She nodded. “Madeline. That’s her name. And yes… she told me what I needed to know.” “Good.” He stroked a hand into her hair. “Then it’s worth it, right? All the elder drama?” “I think so.” She shifted, her leg sliding up over his hip. Her thigh brushed against the bulge

straining in his sweatpants, and she stilled, then smirked.
“You really missed me, huh?”
Jake’s breath caught. “Don’t flatter yourself.”

She tilted her head back to look at him. “You sure about that? Because it feels like I’ve been gone for a month, not a day.”
He grinned. “A whole day without seeing that smart mouth? Torture.”
Lyra raised herself onto her elbow, leaning in until her face hovered over his. “You know, for someone who says I drive him insane, you sure seem eager to carry me around and sleep
next to me.”
“You’re warm,” he said, reaching up to tuck a piece of hair behind her ear.
“And soft?”
His smile curved. “And soft.”
She leaned down until her lips brushed his. “And irresistible?”
Jake groaned. “That one’s getting dangerous.”
Lyra giggled softly and kissed him again, slow and teasing. His hand slid around her waist, tugging her the rest of the way on top of him, and he deepened the kiss. Her fingers tangled in his hair, pulling gently, and he hissed against her lips.
“You keep that up,” he murmured, “and you’re not getting any sleep tonight.”
She grinned against his mouth. “Good. I wasn’t planning to.”
Jake’s hand slipped beneath her shirt, skimming up the warm skin of her back as Lyra straddled him, her thighs snug against his hips. He pulled away from the kiss just long enough to look up at her, breathless and dark–eyed.
“You want to tease, little wolf?” His voice dropped. “Then you better be ready to take the consequences.”
Her breath caught and the smell of her arousal flooded the room. It made him grin darkly. He gripped her waist, rocking her slightly against his erection.
“What kind of consequences?” she asked, smiling coyly.
Jake’s mouth curved in a slow, wicked smile. “Why don’t I show you?”

He flipped her easily, rolling her onto her back with her wrists caught in one of his hands, pinned gently above her head. He hovered over her, his weight pressing her down.
“You’ve been testing my patience all day,” he murmured, brushing his lips over her jaw, down her throat. “Running off to witches. Keeping secrets. Not coming to bed.” His teeth grazed over her skin, just shy of biting. “You think I’m going to just let that go?”
Her hips arched against him. “Jake…”
His free hand slid down her body, under her shirt, dragging the fabric up slowly. “Take this off.
Lyra obeyed quickly when he released her wrist, peeling the shirt off and tossing it to the side.
“Your bra too.”
His c**k strained against his pants as she quickly did away with her bra, tossing it to the floor with her shirt. He leaned back slightly as she stretched out on the bed before him, his eyes tracing every inch of her bare skin, the swell of her breast, the silver scars along her left shoulder and chest.
“You are so fucking beautiful,” he whispered. “And mine.”
He kissed her again, deeper this time, his hand cupping her breast, thumb stroking over her n****e until she whimpered. His mouth followed, hot and open over her skin, sucking and biting until she was squirming beneath him.
“Jake… please.” It came out as a soft keen, her head thrashing slightly, her black hair flying around her face.
He groaned against her, catching her wrists again and pressing his forehead to hers. “I fucking love when you beg.”
He let go of her wrists and slid his hand down between her legs, pressing over the soft fabric of her shorts. “You’re so fucking wet.” He licked his lips, pinching her clit through the fabric. She gasped, biting her lip. “You want me to make you come?”
She nodded, eyes hazy.
He pinched a little harder. “Use your words.”
“Yes,” she breathed. “I want you to make me come.”
He smirked. “That’s what I thought.”

He kissed her hard again, then sat back on his knees and hooked his fingers into the waistband of her shorts. “Lift your hips.”

She obeyed without hesitation, and he stripped her bare, eyes locked on her as he tossed the last of her clothes away. Then he shucked his own shirt and pants, baring himself completely
to her.
Lyra reached for him, but Jake caught her wrists again and pinned them to the bed beside her
head.
“Not yet,” he murmured. “I’m going to take my time.”
She whimpered, and he kissed the sound from her lips. His fingers found her again, slipping between her thighs to stroke slow, aching circles that had her gasping. When he finally slid a finger inside her, she arched against him, thighs trembling.
“Jake…”
“I’ve got you.” He watched her face, her eyes meeting his. “Trust me.”
He added another finger, curling just right until she moaned, her back lifting off the bed. He worked her until she was panting, begging, her hands clenched in the sheets.
When she was close, so close her walls were starting to squeeze his fingers, he pulled away. She let out a cry of dismay, her eyes flying open.
He pressed his fingers to her lips. “Taste.”
She opened her mouth, taking his fingers in, her eyes locked to his the whole time as she sucked. He groaned, precum leaking out of him.
“That’s it,” he growled, lining himself up between her thighs. “You’re mine, Lyra. Say it.”
“I’m yours,” she whispered.
He slid into her slowly, his control hanging by a thread. Her head fell back, a long moan escaping her lips as he filled her, inch by inch, until their hips met.
Jake stilled, savoring the feel of her heat wrapped around him, his forehead resting against hers. “I’ll never let you go,” he hissed, voice low and rough. “Never.”
Then he began to move, steady and deep, drawing moans from her with every thrust. He pinned her wrists again, his body covering hers completely. He picked up the pace, becoming relentless with each thrust.
She moaned, her eyes fluttering shut.

Her eyes flew open.
She was his, and with every roll of his hips, he reminded her of it.

Lyra came undone first, the walls of core clenching down on him as she arched under his control, his name coming out in a long moan. He couldn’t hold on any longer, and he came with a deep groan, her p***y clenching him and milking every drop.
He collapsed beside her, pulling her into his arms, pressing soft kisses to her face, her shoulder, the curve of her neck.
“I meant what I said,” he murmured against her skin. “I’m not going to let you go.”
Lyra buried her face in his chest and he was sure she could hear his heart beating fiercely.
“I know.”
