CHAPTER 61
The wooden door creaked softly as it opened.
A faint medicinal scent drifted out–bitter herbs, old wood, and something deeper, heavier. Adrian stepped inside slowly, his footsteps unusually quiet. The room was dim, lit only by a few oil lamps and a pale glow emanating from a jade vessel placed near the bed.
And there he was.
Adrian stopped.
For a moment, he couldn’t move.
The man lying on the bed was thinner than memory allowed. His once–straight back was bent, his face gaunt, skin pale with a faint gray undertone. Tubes of spiritual essence were arranged carefully around him, feeding a slow, steady stream of healing energy into his body.
His master.
The man who had once stood atop mountains, who had broken stones with his palms, who could silence entire halls with a single glance.
Now reduced to this.
Adrian’s chest tightened.
“He’s surviving on healing essence,” Kai said quietly from behind him. “Some friends… other healers. They bring it whenever they can. It slows the decay. Nothing more.”
Adrian nodded, though his gaze never left the bed.
He walked closer.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
When he finally stood at the bedside, he studied his master carefully–every shallow breath, every faint twitch of muscle. The man’s eyes were half–open, unfocused, but alive.
Still here.
Adrian lowered himself slightly and spoke softly, yet firmly.
“Old man.”
Kai stiffened. “You-”
“It’s fine,” Adrian said quietly. “He hates being called ‘Master‘.”
As if in response, the man’s fingers twitched faintly.
Adrian’s lips curved, just barely.

“You can’t speak, can you?” Adrian asked.
The man didn’t answer–but his eyes shifted, focusing just a fraction more clearly.
“That’s fine,” Adrian continued. “You don’t need to. I’ll talk. You listen.”
He straightened.
“I’m back.”
The man’s breathing faltered for half a second.
Kai noticed immediately. His eyes widened.
Adrian continued, voice steady.
“I know you didn’t believe I was dead. You were right. I’m here now. And I’m not leaving until you get better”
He paused, then added calmly, almost casually-
“Also, your disciple accepted a challenge.”
Kai turned sharply. “You’re really saying it now?!”
Adrian didn’t look back.
“Seven days from now,” Adrian said. “Twenty–one so–called immortals.”
The master’s hand trembled violently.
This time, there was no mistaking it.
Kai sucked in a sharp breath. “Master… reacted.”
Adrian nodded. “I know.”
He leaned closer. “You’re worried I won’t survive?”
The man’s fingers twitched again–stronger this time.
Adrian chuckled softly. “That hurts.”
Kai couldn’t hold it in anymore. “Are you insane? Twenty–one immortals? Do you even know what that title means anymore? These aren’t ordinary people. These people left the world behind!”
Adrian finally turned to him. His eyes were calm. Too calm.
“I know.”
Kai stared at him. “Then why-”
“Because I was pushed,” Adrian said simply. “And because I can’t retreat.”
He looked back at the bed.

“And because I promised myself I wouldn’t run anymore.”
The master’s breathing steadied slightly, though his hand continued to tremble.
Adrian reached into his pocket and slowly pulled something out.
The ring.
“I have this,” Adrian said. “I never understood it fully. Every time I tried to use it… it overwhelmed me. Like holding back a tide with bare hands.”
Kai leaned closer, eyes narrowing. “That ring…”
The master’s reaction was immediate.
His fingers curled.
His chest rose sharply.
For the first time since Adrian entered, the man’s eyes widened fully.
Adrian’s expression sharpened.
“So you recognize it. Maybe you can tell me about it”
The master couldn’t speak–but his reaction was answer enough.
Adrian lowered the ring slightly. “I thought so.”
Kai swallowed. “What… what is it?”
Adrian shook his head. “I don’t know yet. But I know it’s not meant to be used recklessly.”
He hesitated, then gently took his master’s hand.
The moment their skin touched-
Adrian’s vision shattered.
The room dissolved.
He saw meridians–countless pathways collapsing inward like dying rivers. Blackened threads of corrupted energy gnawed at the edges of golden channels. A vicious cycle: power sustaining life, life feeding power, until both began devouring each other.
Internal decay.
But deeper than that-
A seal.
Ancient. Brutal. Deliberate.
Adrian gasped and pulled his hand back.

Kai rushed forward. “What did you see?”
Adrian’s face was pale–but his eyes burned.
“This isn’t natural,” he said. “This illness… it was triggered.”
Kai’s breath caught. “Triggered?”
“Yes,” Adrian said slowly. “By an external force. Long ago.”
The master’s fingers tightened weakly.
Adrian exhaled. “There is a way. Not a cure yet–but a stabilization. Enough to buy time.”
Kai grabbed his arm. “What do we need?”
Adrian’s gaze sharpened, turning decisive.
“Herbs.”
Kai hesitated. “Ryan… the ones you’re thinking of–those aren’t easy.”
“I know.”
Kai listed them anyway, voice low. “Nightfall Ginseng. Moon–Root Orchid. Azure Spine Leaf. They don’t grow together. Different regions. Dangerous zones.”
“How long?” Adrian asked.
Kai swallowed. “Three to five days… if everything goes right.”
Adrian shook his head. “Too slow.”
Kai stared. “Then what are you saying?”
Adrian stood.
“Tell me where.”
Kai’s eyes widened. “You’re going alone?”
“I have to,” Adrian said. “If I know the locations, I can get them in twenty–four hours.”
Kai laughed incredulously. “That’s impossible.”
Adrian met his gaze.
“So was surviving twenty–one immortals,” he said calmly.
Silence fell.
Outside, the wind howled against the mountain.
Adrian slipped the ring back onto his finger.

“Stay here,” he said. “Protect him. Keep the essence flowing.”
Kai clenched his fists. “And you?”
Adrian turned toward the door, his silhouette steady and unafraid.
“I’ll bring back the herbs.“.
