My heart is beating a million miles per hour as I try to take in deep, even breaths to keep the Lycan hunting me from hearing me, almost shit my pants. Ivar is not too far. leaning against the giant boulder, giving us cover. He’s staring back at me, and all I can do is smile and give him a little shrug.
Our team started with six, and now there are just the two of us. Us two against the absolute bombshell that is my grandmother’s team. A team that includes the Lycan King. I push off the cave wall and crouch down beside him.
“We’re going to have to split up, we say at the same time. We both laugh.
“I’ll go left, we both add.
“We both can’t go left, I shake my head. I take a deep breath and nod. “I’ll go right.”
“Ragnar is going to destroy you,” he says sympathetically.
“I don’t see them,” I hear someone call out from the direction we just came from. We both stiffen, and he groans.
I press my finger to my lips and indicate that I will be going right. He nods as I move around the rock as quietly as I can. I can see Georgia slowly making her way inside with her gun aimed in front of her. I fire without warning, and her vest alarm goes off.
“One,” I call out. Another alarm echoes somewhere, and I shut my eyes, wondering who got who.
“One,” Ivar calls out.
I rush out and grab Georgia’s feet. She screams out, and I dive to cover her mouth.
“You’re out. Shut the fuck up,” I whisper–shout at her. She rolls her eyes and sits back.
That leaves Ragnar and my grandmother. I take a deep breath and use Georgia to climb up on a ledge. When I look back at her, she grins back and flips me the finger. I crawl up towards the edge on my belly and see my grandmother not too far. I hear an alarm go off and shut my eyes tightly with my finger over the trigger.
“Found him,” Ragnar calls out, and I fire.
“Dammit, my grandmother growls, looking around. Without thinking things through, Ragnar steps out from where he found Ivar, and I fire. He looks around, and I stand up to wave at the two of them. “You cheeky minx.”
“I almost peed my pants. I was so scared.” I admit, making them all laugh.
“Come down,” Ragnar waves me forward. I slide down the edge. My boot gets caught on a stray root, and I scream as the floor flies at me. I never make it. Austin, our team’s second–in–command, catches me,
“We lost to this?” he glares down at me.
“Yeah, you did. I dust myself off. “For the second time., mind you
“How did you get up there?”
I used Georgie’s body. It’s much higher behind the boulder. Didn’t expect that, huh, Mr Expect the Unexpected? The team laughs as he watches me walk past him.
“Let’s wrap it up. I’ll see you all in the morning. Ragnar tells the thers.

“I’ll see you at home,” I acknowledge her. She comes over and kisses the top of my head.
“Ivar,” she calls. He jogs over to her and waves back at me.

It feels a lot like he’s finally going to tell me that I am off the tear. It’s felt like we’re both at war here, and it’s the last thing I want. If he can transfer me to another team, I know I wouldn’t get into the amount of trouble I do. It’s been a whole year, and now that I am twenty, I’m old enough to join the military. I’ve worked so hard for this. I scored right under Ragnar with the amount of studying we did.
“Ready?” his deep voice startles me. He leans into me and takes in my scent.
“What?”
“You were scared. Just making sure you’ve had enough time to calm down,” he shrugs it off. “Come on.”
I follow behind him. We head up the peak, where a massive hollow tree still blooms with cherry blossoms. Which is strange, because not much grows around here. He offers me an energy drink and sits on the ground right under the tree. I crack the can open and get close to the edge. I crouch, watching the waves below.
“Did you change your mind?” I ask and glance back at him. He pats the ground beside him. I groan and go over to sit.
“I have not,” he clears his throat. He reaches into his coat and pulls out an envelope. My name is on the label on the front. “Why would you think I changed my mind?”
“All you do is yell at me,” I say honestly. He lets out a soft sigh and reaches out to make me look at him.
“Because you don’t listen the first time, Sophia.”
“You don’t listen to me either. You know I can’t do what the others do. I don’t have the strength for it. I can do the same tasks. but in my own way. There’s more than one way to do things. I’ve been thinking that maybe you should transfer me. I can’t learn with you breathing down my neck like this.”
I flinch when he abruptly sits up and pins me to the hollow tree. His hand alone is keeping me from moving.
“You are not transferring. You wanted to be my beta, and this is where you’ll be staying. I want you to toss that thought out. You do this here, or you don’t do it at all. You can head back to the university if you don’t like it. Do you understand me?” he growls.
All I can do is stare back at him, and he knows that I don’t have much room to disobey. Regret quickly crosses his features, and he pulls away to sit in front of me. When he doesn’t say anything, I open the letter to find that I’ve been accepted into the program and will be leaving tomorrow night for official training.
“You couldn’t have just said that?” I ask him.
“You’ll be at this institution for two years,” he says without meeting my gaze. “Sophie, I don’t want you to stray from this path. I know my father wants you turned by the time we’re done with this, but that’s not something you need to worry
about,”
“Because my options are you or Ivar,” I sigh. “Ragnar, I-”
“I am your only option,” he says, turning to look at me. His eyese pitch black as he crawls towards me. I lean back against the tree, unable to look away. “If you come back here with someone else, I will kill him. There will be no one else.”
“That’s a fucked up thing to say to me,” I choke out. His eyes scarh mine for a moment, and he laughs. Laughs wholeheartedly.
“Yeah, it is. I want you to remember it always, Sophia. You’re mig, and I will wait for you to realize that. Until then, run after
