Chapter 53
Tessa’s POV
IJE
The first rays of morning sunlight streamed through the narrow window of our cramped cell, casting a faint glow over the cold, metal walls surrounding us.
I blinked awake, the events from the previous day flooding back to me with a thick sense of dread accompanying it…
Erin lay on the mat across from me, still asleep, her face drawn and pale with exhaustion. I couldn’t help but worry for her, knowing that she was just as frightened and uncertain as I was about our current situation.
I was sickened to have her sleeping once again on a hard floor – just as Leo had made her do back at Kane’s pack – but unfortunately it was out of my hands not to mention that it was currently the least of both of our worries…
As I rose from my position and stretched my stiff muscles, I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that settled over me. The Russian pack had made it clear from the moment of our arrival that we were prisoners here, trapped in a foreign and with no means of escape.
But despite the grim circumstances, I refused to give in to despair. We would learn to make this work in order to survive, perhaps be able to win over the males to actually like us a little? Maybe we would be treated better…
“Morning,” she mumbled, her voice hoarse with exhaustion.
Erin stirred from beside me, groaning softly as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes.
“Morning,” I replied, forcing a smile despite the fear that continued to

We moved slow and cautiously, hearing a flurry of activity from
behind the doors as Erin made the first move to push open the door.
As we entered the canteen, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease and also some relief wash over me at the sight that greeted us both….
The room was

The atmosphere was tense and oppressive, the air thick with the scent of fear and uncertainty as they would whisper and hush one another – slowly taking notice of us both as the ‘newbies‘.
Did we leave our centre to only come to a new one? Was there still a judgement ceremony to be had here?
This was really odd… since I had never heard of this sort of thing happening before?
I could feel the eyes of the other prisoners on us as we made our way to the line with elderly woman serving up trays of the same meal to every girl that
came to them.
I took note of the bottle of water which came with each meal, my dry mouth itching for the liquid as I longed for the queue to hurry up for that simple
reason.
At least they are feeding us and giving us water right?
Eventually we both got served, the meal consisting of a plain sandwich, a piece of fruit (which we could take a selection of) and a plain yogurt followed by
the water.
We found an empty table, seeing the other females gazes still focused intensely on us both as we sank down in to the seats and prayed to go unnoticed.
I glanced around the room, taking in the bleak surroundings with a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach as many of the girls would throw mean faces
whenever I attempted to smile…
“I’m so glad to have water…” Erin greedily drinks from the bottle as I follow her lead, agreeing with a nod.
As we sat down and enjoyed being in a new room with more open space and more females around us, a group of three Russian females approached us, their expressions cold and unwelcoming as I shuffled a little closer to Erin for comfort.
They eyed us with suspicion, their lips pressed into tight lines as they exchanged murmured words in their native language.
I could feel the tension in the air thickening as they drew closer, their presence looming over us like a dark cloud. I instinctively tightened my grip on Erin’s hand, a silent gesture of solidarity in the face of the unknown.
One of the Russian females, a tall and imposing figure with steely eyes and a stern expression, stepped forward, her gaze fixed on us with a mixture of curiosity and disdain. She spoke in rapid Russian, her words sharp and clipped as she addressed us with authority.
I glanced at Erin wide eyed, who looked just as bewildered as I felt. We had no idea what she was saying, but the tone of her voice made it clear that she was not offering us a warm welcome.
“I wish I knew what she was saying,” Erin whispered, her voice barely above a murmur.
“I d–don’t think it matters,” I replied, my voice equally hushed. “Whatever it is, it doesn’t sound g–good.”
The Russian female continued to speak, her words growing more animated as she gestured toward us with a sense of urgency – the other two occasionally laughing beside her.
I could feel the eyes of the other girls on us, their gazes filled with a mixture of curiosity and enjoyment.
As the tension in the room reached a boiling point, I felt a surge of fear wash over me like a tidal wave. We were completely at the mercy of these strangers, with no means of communicating or even defending ourselves…
At least back home we knew what the mean girls were saying…
“S–Sorry… we only know English!” I plead, holding my hands up to her as she seemed to grow more irritated by the second.

“Stupid!” Is all the girl manages to say in her accent, as my heart sinks and I feel overwhelmed with the whole situation.
Being here… not knowing the language… not knowing how things worked… not knowing our purpose…
It was all too much!

Before anything could escalate further, a meaner looking female rushed towards us, as I almost screamed in fear of being attacked – only to find that she turned to face the other girls.
“OTVALI! (F**k off)” She shoves the girl by her shoulder, and surprisingly the trid grow quiet – moving backwards and returning back to their table.
Not before offering us a few last snarky looks that is…
“Ne Russkiy? (No Russian?)” The girl sinks in to the seat opposite us both – her long dark hair slicked back in to a low ponytail style.
I open and close my mouth like a fish out of water, seeming like a total idiot as again we don’t know what the girl is saying…
Did she just defend us both? It was hard to tell… could she too be trusted?!
“English?” The girl tries again, as we both nod and perk up at the familiar question as she nods slowly.
“Not safe here! Why did you both come?” She questions, placing her elbows on the table and leaning closer to us.
Does she think we came here by choice?
“We didn’t have a choice. Two males brought us here.” Erin tries to explain briefly, her voice quiet and wary of the nearby listeners at the surrounding
tables.
“Ah!” The girl seems to understand, as she sighs and runs a hand over her face. “Not good!” She confirms, as my heart rate quickens.
What is she saying? How bad was it here?!
For a long moment, there was silence as the Russian female studied us with a critical eye.
“Sasha.” She places a hand out to Erin first, who slowly shakes it before she does the same with me as I also return the favour.
“Erin and this is Tessa…” Erin explains, motioning to each of us as she nods along and follows our English as best she can.
She doesn’t seem too bad, but I couldn’t shake how scared the other three seemed to have been of her… that was weird!
The canteen buzzed with activity as we sat there, surrounded by the unfamiliar faces of the other female prisoners. Some were engaged in hushed conversations, while others sat in silence, their eyes fixed on their plates as they ate their meager rations.
I couldn’t help but feel a sense of isolation in the midst of the crowded room. We were strangers in a strange land, surrounded by people whose language and customs were completely foreign to us.
As I looked around, I couldn’t help but wonder about the other women in the canteen. What had brought them here? Had they always been here?
After what felt like an eternity, a bell rang out, signaling the end of the meal. The other prisoners rose from their seats, clearing their plates and filing out of the canteen in an orderly fashion.
“Follow!” Sasha gestured us over in to line, as we both rushed after her in fear of standing out or misbehaving.

At least she is trying to help us, right?
We followed suit, falling into step with the rest of the group as we were herded out of the canteen and into the compound beyond.
What awaited us next in this place? And would we ever find a way out?
Taking a deep breath, I hoped to at least make it through the first day myself and Erin – both alive!
