Chapter 55
Tessa’s POV
Erin and I sat huddled together in the cold darkness of our cell. Despite The minutes stretched into hours, each passing moment feeling like an eternity the overwhelming sense of hopelessness that threatened to consume me, I refuse to surrender to despair. I had to stay strong, for both of us.
As I looked around the cramped confines of our prison, my mind raced with thoughts of escape. But every idea I came up with seemed futile, every plan doomed to failure before it had even began.
Who was I kidding? Despite the ideas being there, I was far too scared to even attempt something so fatal…
We were trapped, with no way out and no one to turn to for help either we would have to learn to obey and learn to survive here – that was the only way.
As the minutes ticked by, the anticipation grew, each passing second bringing us closer to our moment of reckoning. We didn’t know what lay ahead, didn’t know if we would succeed or fail under these new rules. But one thing was certain; we would never give up, never stop fighting until we were at least
somewhat happy again.
Just as the despair threatened to overwhelm us completely, the heavy metal door of our cell was heard being unlocked before it creaked guard’s harsh voice shattered our silence.

“GET UP AND COME!” He barked, his tone brooking no argument as Erin and I scrambled to our feet, our hearts pounding with fear.
We followed him out of the cell, our steps faltering as we were led down the dimly lit corridors once again – our footsteps quick to keep up.
I just wish that they didn’t yell all the time… why were these males in permanent grumpy moods?!
As we emerged outside into the chilly winter air, the biting wind whipped at our skin, sending shivers down our spines.
I instantly moved to hug my arms tightly around myself, longing for the warmth of Kane’s embrace, but knowing that such comforts were now nothing more
my sad days. than a distant memory which would continue to crop up and torment me for the rest of
We joined the ranks of the other females from the canteen, their faces drawn and weary as they all similarly stood in their short–sleeved shirts, their breath misting out in to the frigid cool air.
The gravel crunched beneath our feet as we were lined poking at different females to stand correctly.

It reminded me a little of our own judgment day back home, the tension thick in the air as we awaited our fate with this one being a lot more cold and terrifying that is.

As the anticipation mounted, I felt a quick hand on my shoulder and turned to see Sasha standing beside us, her eyes darting nervously around the crowd.

If the guards were this intense, then I can only begin to imagine their leader…
As the moments ticked by, the sense of dread only intensified, each passing second bringing us closer to our inevitable confrontation with the Alpha. And as

the buzzer sounded out, signaling the arrival of our captors, I braced myself for whatever lay ahead, steeling myself for the trials that awaited us in this
harsh and unforgiving land.
The guards scurried aside, making their distance to us known, before the main doors of the building were once again opened.
I looked up to find an enormous male step out first dressed in the thickest fur coat imaginable reaching all the way down to his calves. The outfit in true Russian fashion was complete with a matching fur hat which only mocked us females with how cold we all were before him.
That’s got to be their Alpha…
Ruthless, middle aged, mean, intimidating… he ticked all of the boxes!
With that, I heard a sharp hiss from beside me – turning to find Sasha glancing up at me with her head dropped forward completely.
She was signalling for me to keep my head down as I had been standing gawking at the male like a fool!
As the Alpha approached, his presence seemed to cast a shadow over the entire courtyard, his gaze piercing and calculating as it swept over the assembled females. I couldn’t help but feel a shiver run down my spine as his cold, indifferent eyes passed over us, as if we were nothing more than pieces on a chessboard to be moved at his whim.
There was an ensemble of around eight other males who had followed out from behind him, all different ages and similarly dressed in fur.
I’m guessing those are his higher ranked men…
Sasha’s warning was a timely reminder of the danger we were in as I avoided eye contact at all costs. I quickly lowered my head, mimicking her movements as best I could, hoping to avoid drawing any unwanted attention to myself.
“VNIZ! (DOWN!)” The Alpha suddenly boomed, causing me to gasp and turn to Sasha who instantly dropped to her knees – head pressed to the stoney floor.
Not wanting to be the last, I instantly threw myself forward, turning to find Erin who had successfully made it down beside me too.
What the heck!
But despite our efforts to blend in, I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that settled like a heavy weight in the pit of my stomach. The Alpha’s presence loomed over us like a dark cloud, casting a pall of fear and uncertainty over the entire courtyard.
As he began to address the crowd, his voice carried like thunder, echoing off the walls of the compound as he spoke in Russian and we longed to understand the foreign tongue to offer us some comfort in what was going on. I couldn’t understand the words, but the tone of his voice sent a chill down my spine, sending a clear message of authority and dominance.
I glanced over at Erin, her face pale and drawn as she kneeled beside me, her eyes wide with fear and trained on the rocks beside her. We were both out of our depth here, facing a situation beyond anything we had ever encountered before.
But as I looked around at the other females, their faces pinched with fear and resignation, I knew that we were not alone in our struggle – everyone was scared, not just us. We were all in this together, united by our shared plight and pur determination to survive against all odds whether the others would
admit it or not.
As the Alpha continued to speak, his words washing over us like a cold wave, I pushed my body to ignore the rattling cold it faced from being out here: with the weather being frosty enough to even snow.
After a few minutes of the Alpha yelling, his fellow men laughing at one point at something he said, I watched from the corner of my eye as he turned on his heels and headed back inside – seeming unbothered by us now.
However…

That didn’t stop the remaining males, as they wasted no time before grabbing a nearby female and dragging them along with them back inside – some wincing loudly at the scraping of their knees whilst others even cried at being selected.
This is hell… it has to be!
Thankfully, they didn’t venture up to the back of the crowd seeming to want the selection over and done with more quickly as they grabbed whoever was
most convenient to them.
Was it over? Did we make it through our first viewing?
A buzzer eventually sounded as the doors closed leaving us alone outside with the guards once again as I heard Sasha pushing herself up to her feet from
beside me as I copied her movements.
My knees ached now from leaning on the jagged stones but I was thankful that was the only outcome from the experience.
“PERERYV! (RECESS!)” One of the guards hollered, as the females seemed to relax a little and disperse off in to their friendship groups as Sasha joined us
once again.
“What did he say?” Erin asked, referring to the guard who had just yelled as she points – with Sasha quickly pushing down her hand.
“No point! He said it is break time for us! Come with me!” Sasha gestures for us to follow her, as we walk around the side of the building to a little wall.
“Keeps out the wind!” Sasha explains, as we all stand in and find it to be slightly warmer.
I hope that we aren’t out here for too long… we will die from the cold…
