The two of us slept through the day. When my alarm went off for my first day of work, Ragnar was gone. My first day has been a lot of fun. Getting to know the people and kids around the castle has its perks.
Dr Aimee Polucci is obviously a mob wife. At least, she fits the description. She’s wearing a bright red fitted dress under her lab coat with red bottom heels. Her long lushious brown hair is down. It looks like someone did her makeup professionally before she left her house this morning. And then there’s the insane amount of diamonds decorating her cars, neck, arms, and her wedding ring easily costs more than my entire existence.
I’ve come across women like her in Luna Romano’s circle. She was tight with a few of them. Maybe I’m just being judgmental because I thought I was a little overdressed until I arrived and realized I looked like a fucking gremlin compared to her. Whatever the case, it didn’t matter. I love it here.
It’s my first day, and I feel like I’m home. It’s a good feeling, and the best part is that I’m no longer questioning my competence. I’m not looking from the outside in. I didn’t know anything was missing until I came to Blackstone. What is surprising is that someone with the kind of credentials Aimee Polucci has has only one nurse, and she doesn’t seem to want to be here.
“You did amazing for your first day. You have a way with kids,” Dr Polucci says as we’re sanitizing the rooms to close up.
“Thank you. You’re great at this. Your patients love you. Especially the parents. It’s not often that parents respect medical advice.”
“You worked at Artume General,” she states. It’s not a question.
“I did.”
“It’s a great werewolf facility. Why did you leave?” she asks.
I feel my body tingle from the question. No one has ever asked me that before. I guess I always assumed everyone knew. I’ve never really had the luxury of privacy because of Santiago and my grandmother, who is the freaking warlord rockstar of the Lycan world, apparently.
“I was fired. After my mate married a high–ranked wolf, everything I worked for just kind of started falling apart when I tried to escape.”
“You’re mate married another wolf and still tried to keep you?” She looks at me, appalled.
“Correct,” I huff.
“What an asshole,” she scoffs. “Let me guess. An alpha.”
“Yeah,” I nod.
“Well, it’s a good thing you were able to escape. I don’t understand the logic. Even as a Lycan Omega, you are far more powerful than any wolf. Including your mate. If you had completed the bond, he would now be one of the few formers in our ranks. He’d live forever or until he was killed,” she rolls her eyes.

‘Me too.” I smile and finish putting away the cleaning supplies.
“You may go. I will close up. I will see you tomorrow after your classes are over. Be good. Sophia, and thank you for all of your help today. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a student.”
“May I ask why?”
“My mate,” she says softly. “He’s not what one would deem as honorable.”
“What does that have to do with you?”
A lot, apparently,” she shrugs it off. “Story for another time.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” I bow politely. She smiles, but it doesn’t reach her eyes this time.
When I get outside, I pause beside my car when I see the shiny black Maserati beside Dr. Polucci’s Mercedes. There’s a man leaning against it. He’s wearing a black–on–black suit. His hair is slicked back. I can’t see his eyes behind the dark shades, but I can feel his gaze on me. I give him a courteous nod, and he acknowledges me with a nod of his own.
The sound of another over–the–top car annoys the hell out of me. I watch as Ragnar’s custom Bentley Mulliner Batur pulls into the parking lot. He pulls up to the left of my little beetle. My forehead hits the soft top of my car as I wait for him to get out of the car. I glance over at the person I assume is Mr. Polucci, who is smirking.
“Are you done?” Ragnar asks without so much as a greeting.
“I’m doing great, My King,” I bow formally. “How can I be of assistance?”
“F**k off. I asked you a question,” he rolls his eyes. He glances over at the man and also acknowledges him with a nod. The man steps away from the car and formally bows to him. “Get in my car. I’ll have someone drive your car back to your grandmother’s.”
“What?” I shake my head.
He growls at me and comes around to take my things, including my keys. He tosses them into the back seat and grabs my hand to lead me over to his stupid car.
“Laters, Polucci,” he waves at the man as she shoves me into the passenger seat.
“My King,” Mr. Polucci bows with a massive grin on his face.
I sit in the seat, not wanting to cause a scene. He takes that as my forfeit and shuts the door. I watch him go over to the man and shake his hand before he comes back and gets in.

“Yes, I am,” I say despite knowing he was being sarcastic.
This car is permeated with his scent. Even if I wanted to be mad, I couldn’t. It’s like being wrapped in his arms after having a long day. I stretch and sit back, feeling the day’s events come over me. It feels good to be back here. Even better to have somewhere to be.
“You’re not going to ask where I’m taking you?” he asks after a while.
“No.” I clear my throat.
“What if I were kidnapping you?”
“You are, and considering it’s you, I don’t really care.”
“I don’t know if that’s meant to be flattering or offensive,” he laughs. I turn my head to glare at him. “Half and half is fine. Ask me where I’m taking you.”
“Can you take me home? I’ve been working all day. A bunch of kids sneezed on me, and I may or may not have handled pee.”
“And you got in my car like that?” he grimaces.
“You shoved me in your car,” I turn to face him with disbelief. “Are you okay? Are you on crack? You seem a little agitated.”
“Crack doesn’t work on us,” he shrugs. “I’m well rested, and I’ve been working on something for you. As an apology, but you’re right. I should take you home so you can disinfect yourself. Next time, tell me you handled pee and sick children before I take you on a ride in my car.”
“Next time, greet me properly. Hey, Sophie, or hi, bitch. That’s usually followed by “How was your day?” and “Are you busy?” because I would like to show you something I’ve been working on for you. What you just did would be more than sufficient evidence to file a restraining order.”
“You’re right, you’re always this difficult,” he rolls his eyes as he comes to a stop in front of my grandmother’s house. He stops me before I can bail. I look back at him to see that he’s in a good mood. “Hi, bitch. How was your day?”
“Dick,” I laugh and pull my arm out of his hold. “I’ll be down in thirty.”
“Twenty,” he counters before I get too far.
“Welcome home, Sophie. How was your first day?” my grandmother intercepts me before I can rush up the
stairs.
“It was great. I love working with Dr Polucci, but I can’t talk right now. Ragnar is waiting for me outside, and it seems important. He kidnapped me from work,” I kiss her on the cheek. “I’ll be back later. Don’t wait up for
us.”
