Theard the door open behind me, and every muscle in my body tensed. Erin’s go on my arms tightened as if she felt it too the creeping dread that Withered down my spine. I didn’t dare turn around at first, not until I heard Alphy Kion’s booming voice.
A Pere he is. The man of the hour! I told you he was trustworthy of doing his job
The works were meant to be reassuring, but they struck me like a hammer to the chest. The blood drained from my face, and an icy wave of terror washed over me. I knew who he was talking about. I didn’t need to look to confirm it.
But I did anyway
and there he was. The man who had made my life a waking
Against every instinct telling me to keep my head down, I glanced over my shoulder nightmare, standing there as if he were some kind of hero. His smug expression bly deepened the pit in my stomach, and I couldn’t stop the way my body trembled.
I turned away quickly, burying my face into Kane’s arm. He was here. Kane was here. But even his solid presence couldn’t keep the fear at bay. Not when he was in the room.
Kane’s voice, low and comforting, rumbled through his chest. “It’s alright, Tessa. He’s working with us. He got you out of there.”
No.
I shook my head, the denial ripping through me like a physical force. My breathing hitched, and I tightened my hold on Kane, desperate to anchor myself to
the one thing that felt safe.
“H–He d–did this to m–me,” I stammered, my voice trembling just as much as my body.
Kane stiffened beneath my touch, his entire body locking up as if I’d just lit a fuse. I could feel the tension rolling off him in waves, and the room grew
impossibly still.
“What did you just say?” he asked, his voice dangerously calm.
I clung to him, willing myself to explain, but the words felt like jagged shards in my throat. “I–It was him,” fi

Then everything erupted.
Kane moved so fast that I barely registered the shift until he was no longer in front of me. I reached out instinctively, but he was already across the room, a storm of fury directed at the man who had haunted me for days.
“You,” Kane growled, his voice a weapon in itself. “You hit her?”
The man stepped back, his smug demeanor crumbling under Kane’s wrath. He muttered something, but it didn’t matter. Kane fist connecting with the man’s jaw so hard that the sound echoed in the room.

I flinched, my hand flying to my mouth as the man staggered back, clutching his face. Kane didn’t stop. He grabbed the man by the collar and slammed him against the wall, the sheer force of it rattling the furniture nearby.

I should snap your neck for this? Kane roared, his voice raw with anger

Tears blurred my vision, and I could only watch, frozen in place as the man sputed excuses in broken English. None of it mattered. None of it could unde what he’d done, the bruises he’d left on my hody, or the fear that still clung to like a second skin:
Kanel Alpha Kian’s voice cut through the chaos, but Seth stepped in, his hand of Kion’s arm. Let him handle this.”

For a moment, I thought Kane might actually kill him. The room was thick with the weight of his rage, and even though it wasn’t directed at me, I felt like I could hardly breathe.
But then Seth spoke, his calm voice reaching through the storm. “Kane, Alpha K has a point. As much as he’s a fucking lowlife pig, we might need him. Let him go. You can kill him another time.”
Kane hesitated, his hands still gripping the man’s collar. Slowly, he released him, and the man crumpled to the floor in a bloodied heap.
“Get him out of my sight,” Kane ordered, his voice cold and unyielding.
Alpha Kion’s men moved quickly, dragging the spy out of the room as his pleas for mercy fell on deaf ears.
When Kane turned back to me, his expression shifted, the fire in his eyes softening as he knelt before me. His hands found my face, so gentle that it brought
fresh tears to my eyes.
“I’m so sorry this happened to you,” he whispered, his voice breaking. “I should’ve been there. I shouldn’t have ignored you back home. This is my fault.”
I shook my head, my fingers trembling as they reached for his. “Y–You’re here now I said, my voice cracking under the weight of my emotions. “That’s all
that matters.”
His arms wrapped around me, pulling me into his chest, and for the first time in days, I felt like I could finally breathe.
I knew that there was still more to tell him, and that Kane only knew a quarter of the story, but right now, I was beyond overwhelmed without adding on that the same man who hit me, had also tried to get me to suck him off…
Kane held me as if he was afraid I might slip through his fingers and disappear again. His warmth surrounded me, and for a moment, I let myself sink into it, into him. His chest rose and fell against my cheek, his breathing still uneven as he tried to calm himself.
I closed my eyes, listening to the strong, steady thrum of his heartbeat. It was a sound I never thought I’d hear again, and it was enough to hold the pieces of me together, even if just for now.
But reality clawed its way back too quickly.
Erin shifted beside us, her voice trembling. “What… what happens now? Are we going h–home?”
I opened my eyes and glanced over at her. She looked so small and lost, her arms wrapped tightly around herself with Seth’s hands on her shoulders to remind her that he was there.
Kane’s grip on me loosened slightly as he turned to look at her. “Now,” he said firmly, “you’re safe and that’s the main thing. Both of you. I’ll make sure of
it.”
Alpha Kion stepped closer, his commanding presence filling the room. His tone was steady but left no room for argument. “They’ll need medical attention immediately. My men will ensure they’re seen to.”
I shrank back at his approach, and Kane’s arm instinctively tightened around me. Kion’s sharp eyes didn’t miss the motion, but he said nothing.
“Not just your men,” Kane countered, his voice hardening. “I’ll stay with them. I’m not leaving their side, have a pack doctor brought to us.”

Kane’s arm remained firmly around my waist as we moved through the hallways, his body a wall of strength shielding me from everything and everyone. The halls were Benly quiet, the tension from earlier still thick in the air. The few pack members we passed averted their eyes, stepping aside to let us
through. It was as if they could feel the storm brewing around Kane, the barely contained rage simmering beneath his calm exterior.
When we reached the stairs, Kane lifted me effortlessly into his arms before I could protest. My cheeks burned at the sudden closeness, but I was too
drained to argue
‘You don’t have to carry me, I murmured, though my voice lacked conviction.
Itis jaw tightened, and he glanced down at me. “You can barely stand, Tessa. Let me take care of you.”
Something in his tone–an edge of guilt, maybe desperation–made me bite back any further protests. I rested my head against his chest, letting the rhythmic sound of his heartbeat soothe me
We reached the second floor, and Kane pushed open a door to what I assumed was one of the guest rooms. It was modest but clean, with a large bed in the center and an adjoining bathroom. He set me down gently on the edge of the bed, his hands lingering on my shoulders as if he was afraid I’d collapse
without his support.
Kane crouched in front of me, his hands resting on my knees. I’m going to run you a bath, okay? I’ll stay close in case you need anything.”
The thought of being alone, even for a few minutes, made my chest tighten, but nodded. “Thank you.”
He pressed a kiss to my temple before disappearing into the bathroom.
Kane returned a moment later, a towel slung over his shoulder. “The water’s ready he said, his gaze searching mine. “Do you think you can manage, or do you need help?
The thought of him seeing me in such a vulnerable state made my stomach twist, but I trusted him more than anyone else. ‘I… I think I can manage,” I said
