My Human
Chapter 79
Kane’s POV
The ridge was unforgiving on this side, its icy edges sharper and slicker than the ascent as my picks nearly lost grip one too many times as I cursed under my breath.
“Everyone be careful – the rock isn’t as sturdy on this side!” I yell, as Viktor copies me in Russian to inform the entire group.
The steel picks were groaning against the weight of our bodies, testing us with every movement. Each swing had to be deliberate and precise; a single misstep could easily send one of us plummeting down into the shadowy abyss below.
Snow swirled relentlessly in the air, obscuring our visibility as we moved. My muscles began to burn from the effort, but I gritted my teeth and focused on the task ahead. It was rare for me to feel out of shape, but it wasn’t every day I was scaling up and down mountains during a blizzard in Russia!
Behind me, Seth cursed softly under his breath as his pick slipped for a moment, sending a spray of ice cascading down. He caught himself quickly, but the
frustration in his voice was clear.
“Keep it fucking steady,” I murmured without turning, my voice low but firm. “We’re almost there.”
Viktor was descending parallel to me, moving with a calculated grace with his golden eyes occasionally scanning over the terrain below. His pack followed
his lead, their movements synchronised and efficient.
I couldn’t deny the man’s skill he was an asset to this mission, evidently more used to operating under these conditions compared to what we were but on the flip side, this would act as good training for my pack…
If we can be successful here, then any fight we would face back home would be a breeze!
The bottom of the ridge came into view at last, a stretch of flat ground where the other half of our team waited. They crouched low among the rocks,
everyone was still alive. scanning the surrounding forest for any signs of movement. Relief flickered through me as I counted each of them
When my boots finally hit solid ground, I exhaled a breath I hadn’t realised I had been holding. Straightening up, I adjusted my gear and turned to check on my men. Seth landed beside me with a grunt, shaking snow from his gloves as he muttered something about needing a drink after this which caused me to
smirk.
“Let’s all regroup,” I ordered, motioning for everyone to gather near the rocks. “We need a new plan before we move any closer to that compound.”
Viktor joined me, his expression unreadable as he studied the forest that helped to conceal the fortress buried in the distance.
“We can’t risk losing anyone to those snipers,” I said, my jaw tightening. “There has to be another way in coming, get us inside the fences and we can easily take the fuckers out undetected.”
something quieter, something they won’t see
Viktor nodded slowly, his gaze flicking over to Purcell, who was huddled near the edge of the group, speaking quietly with what I’m assuming was one of his
friends if he even had any!
I swallowed my pride, already dreading what I had to do. Purcell was a snake, a coward, and every instinct in me screamed to keep him at arm’s length. But the bastard knew this territory better than any of us, and if there was another way under that fence, he’d know about it.
“Purcell,” I called out, my voice cold and clipped.
The man flinched, his head snapping up to look at me. His eyes darted around nervously, landing on Viktor as if seeking reassurance. When I stepped closer,

his hands shot up in surrender, his posture screaming submission since I had already lunged for him twice before now,
I rolled my eyes, already regretting this. “Relax,” I muttered, though I knew he couldn’t understand me. “I’m not going to rip your throat out. Yet”
Viktor stepped in, his voice low and steady as he translated my words into Russian. Purcell’s shoulders eased slightly, though his wary gaze remained fixed
on me.
I crossed my arms over, forcing myself to remain calm. “Ask him if there’s another way under that fence,” I said to Viktor. “Something the snipers won’t be
watching.”
Viktor nodded, turning to relay the question. Purcell listened intently, his brow furrowing in thought. For a moment, he said nothing, his gaze darting between me, Viktor, and the map we had spread out earlier. Then, something seemed to click.
His brows shot up, and he began speaking rapidly in Russian, his hands gesturing animatedly as he explained. I clenched my jaw, waiting impatiently for
Viktor to translate.
“He’s saying there’s an old drainage tunnel that runs beneath the compound,” Viktor said finally, his tone measured. “It’s hidden by the forest on the eastern side, close to the outer wall. The tunnel hasn’t been used in years, but if it’s still intact, it could get us past the fence without alerting the guards.”
I arched a brow, skepticism flickering through me. “And why didn’t he mention this earlier?”
Viktor relayed the question, and Purcell shrugged, speaking in a defensive tone.
“He says he didn’t think it was relevant until now,” Viktor translated, his lips curling slightly in what might have been amusement. “Apparently, it’s not marked on the map because Dimitri’s men don’t use it. They consider it too small and too risky to navigate.”
I let out a low growl, my wolf bristling at the audacity of this man. “Risky or not, it’s our best shot at avoiding the guns,” I said, glaring at Purcell. “Tell him to show us exactly where this tunnel is. If he’s lying, he’s going to regret it. He can lead us through first!”
Viktor translated, and Purcell paled visibly, nodding quickly as he pointed to a spot on the map. His words came in a hurried rush, and Viktor translated as
he spoke.
“It’s about a mile east of here,” Viktor said. “He says the entrance is hidden by a cluster of rocks near the base. We’ll have to clear some debris to get inside, but it should lead directly under the fence and into the compound.”
I stared at the map, my mind racing. A mile wasn’t far, but it would take time to navigate through the dense forest without alerting Dimitri’s patrols. Still, it was better than trying to run around like chickens avoiding the snipers head–on….
“Fine,” I said finally, my tone sharp. “We’ll check it out. But if this tunnel doesn’t lead to where he says it does, he’ll answer to me.”
Viktor smirked faintly, relaying my warning to Purcell. The man nodded frantically, his hands still raised in a gesture of compliance.
“Move out,” I ordered, motioning for the team to fall in line.
The forest seemed to close in around us as we moved eastward, the shadows deepening under the thick canopy of trees that thankfully acted as a shield. against the snowfall.
My wolf paced restlessly beneath my skin, every sense on high alert as we approached the location Purcell had described. A crackling came from Victor’s pocket, our radio coming to life for the first time…
“VOYDITE? VOYDITE? Eto Alfa Kion iz pervoy komandy!”

(“COME IN? COME IN? It is Alpha Kion from team one!“)
The grainy Russian voice spoke out, as we all paused to listen in.
“Alfa Viktor, vtoraya komanda!”
(“Alpha Viktor, team two!“)
We paused, before another connection was gained moments later:
“Chetvertaya komanda zdes, my vas slyshim!”
(“Team four here, we can hear you!“)
“What are they saying?” I question, glancing at Viktor who holds the radio in his hands.
“Checking in, we’ve not heard from team three yet but the others have made contact.” Viktor announces, as I nod once, being interrupted again by the
device-
“Vse yeshche zhivy i na svoikh mestakh? U tret’yey komandy ne dolzhno byt signala!” The voice sounding like Alpha Kion speaks through again, as I look at Viktor expectantly.
“Asking if we are all still alive and in position. I will explain our new plan.” Viktor mutters quickly, before switching to Russian, as he begins to rant in to
the speaker.
“Yes they will be best waiting for us to take out the inside snipers before charging the compound.” I give my insight to which Viktor nods and adds more Russian to what he had already said.
If this tunnel was real, it could be the key to turning this mission heavily in our favour…
If not… well, Purcell would soon learn what happens when you lie to an Alpha.
