Chapter 25 Intrude
She worked in tandem with Summer–he handled the zombies while she dragged the vehicles–clearing and pulling every wrecked car from across the roads to the entrance of her little path until it was completely blocked.
Looking at the massive crash site they’d created, anyone with half a brain wouldn’t dare try to get through.
On top of that, she had Summer herd the remaining zombies toward this side.
Iris had them act as her guards, standing watch.
A few passing cars caught sight of her doing all this.
But not a single one stopped to ask a question.
Because this was a damn apocalypse.
Everyone was focused on getting out as fast as possible. Who had time to worry about anyone else?
Iris barely spared a thought for the passing vehicles.
They were just disposable spectators.

For nearly every driver on this road, it had become a one–way
ticket. They would never turn back.
Iris displayed her superhuman strength for them, and that was all they got to see.
It was too fast to be curious, too busy fleeing to ask questions. Their lives were about to hit a crisis.
Once she had secured her little path and assigned the half–bodied zombies as guards, she left the area.
When she returned to the base with Summer and both of them took a shower, she heard the alarm blare from the base’s surveillance system.
She rushed straight to the tower.
Her monitoring computers had all been moved up to the tower for easy oversight of the defenses.
At this moment, one of the dozens of small surveillance feeds- the one with the farthest view of the highway–started beeping.
Iris zoomed in on the surveillance feed.
A pickup truck, loaded to the brim with cargo, barreled toward her from the city. It slammed on the brakes just before the road she’d just barricaded.

The people inside looked rattled at the sight of a road so thoroughly blocked by cars.
They hesitated for ten seconds or so, unwittingly drawing the half–bodied zombies toward themselves. Then they reversed slightly to avoid the crowding undead and hit the gas again, apparently planning to smash through.
Iris‘ eyes darkened in an instant.
Well, well, they were coming straight for her.
She snatched her crossbow and locked the bolt onto one of the approaching vehicle’s tires.
“Whoosh!”
In her view, the front tire blew apart with a thunderous pop.
The truck lurched forward from inertia and then screeched to a halt.
After a moment, four or five big men climbed out.
And Iris froze. She recognized one of them.
Wasn’t that the agent who had rented her the bunker?
Are you sure it’s safe in there?”

“Of course! It’s a bunker that’s miles from anyone else. Almost no one knows about it. I rented it to a girl a month ago to grow mushrooms. Maybe we’ll even find some inside!”
“Come on, guys! Clear the zombies, fix the tires, and we’re going in!”
In Iris‘ view, the men split into two groups. One team cleared the nearby zombies, and the other tried to lift the truck and change the tire.
“Jack, these zombies around here… why do they all look half–done?”
“Yeah… they’re all half–bodies!”
“And were these cars get dragged here?”
Just then, the man who was crouched down to change the tire shouted, “Jack! Wait! Someone shot out our tire!”
Before he could finish, “whoosh“, another tire blew.
Now anyone with half a brain would know something was off.
They had wandered straight into someone else’s territory.
“Jack, there’s a top dog nearby.

“This is their stomping ground.
“What do we do now?”
The heavily tattooed man called Jack yanked the agent over. “Damn it! What the hell did you get us into? You said nobody was here!”
“I–I swear! Only one woman rented it!”
“Cut the crap! One woman couldn’t have done all this!”
“I–I don’t know… Maybe someone else took it over,” the agent stammered, fear written all over his face as he looked at Jack.
“Get out!” Jack shoved him forward.
“Whoosh!”
A short bolt flew again. The agent, already panicked, stumbled and fell. As he scrambled backward, a bolt shot toward the very spot he had just moved from.
He rolled and crawled toward Jack to dodge.
Watching that level of marksmanship made Jack’s skin crawl.
The shots were lightning–fast, deadly accurate, and completely

silent. They couldn’t even tell where the fire was coming from.
If whoever was shooting actually wanted them dead, they wouldn’t stand a chance.
But at the same time, a realization hit them.
“I get it! Her range is limited!”
“Exactly! She can only reach the front tires!”
Suddenly, everything clicked. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have only shot their two front tires and only fired when the agent got shoved forward.
That was her maximum reach.
“Jack, now what?
“Do we cut and run?”
Jack Hunter’s eyes glinted with bloodthirst.
Leave? Not a chance.
Not only were their cars trashed, but they had nowhere else to

He yanked open the back door and dragged out two young women, disheveled and battered.
“You two get in front! Move it!”
Through Iris‘ crosshair, she could see two young women, their bodies scarred and bruised from head to toe.
